Because how in the name of the holy cheeses does one loose weight at the age of 48, when nothing that used to work in the past, works anymore?

I am reasonably active and don't overeat although admittedly I do drink alcohol and have a weakness for sweets. This was never an issue before but clearly it is now. Simple I hear you say, stop drinking alcohol and eating sweets. But I have. And whist in the past I would have started noticing some change after a couple of weeks, nothing moves at the moment. In fact, I am just getting bigger and bigger.

I have extremely large thighs and I am only short so I feel really uncomfortable within myself. My only saving grace is that I don't have a fat belly.

I am a bit sick of being hungry pretty much all the time and still, it seems I need to accept that I've gone from a size 10 to a size 12 in the space of a year and I've been hungry for the most part. Well I don't want to accept that. I need to go back to a size 10 or by the end of 2018 I'll be a size 14.

Please help me.

Year and Olivia The problem with dairy is that the calcium is difficult for most people to ingest because we don't have a specific chemical in our gut.( I get terrible allergic reactions from it, so I avoid it )

SOME people are alright with it. I don't subscribe to the 'one size fits all' in anything. One can always take a supplement that is suitable for humans.

Iwillsurvive I lost my 3 stone still eating whole rice, it's good for us, and fruit (but fresh organic seasonal fruit and on an empty stomach).

Oh I haven't shared a bed for the whole night ! With dh for many years , one of the reasons why we're still together!!!

OliviaD68 · 18/01/2018 11:13

@ppeatfruit

You are right about absorption of calcium. K2 and D3 would help with that.

It's true that some can't break down milk products well. About 50% of the population.

Disagree with your statement on rice and fruit though

ppeatfruit · 18/01/2018 15:10

Whole organic rice not ""stripped of all it's goodness" white rice Olivia

The white is more easily digested than potatoes though.

Well you can't disagree that I lost weight eating fruit on an empty stomach and eating whole rice, because I did. Grin

I've got 8fit on phone and done workout this week - short and meant to use body weight to improve strength
Posting her as I'm appalled at how bad my balance is!! Stunning to me that this is me! Lunges, leg kicks - anything that means my feet aren't both firmly on ground I have to have something to hold nearby to balance!!
I hope this exercise will improve this
DD who does lots of yoga says I should look at one spot to help but I have to look at foot placement for lunges

ppeatfruit · 18/01/2018 18:08

abitoflight I walk around on my tiptoes for quite a while (great for my leg strength ) and do plies while washing up, then standing up and pulling in my bum and tum muscles! . Just practising will help your balance!

A couple of years ago I was piling on the weight, I was 50. Did loads of exercise. Still the same just toned up the flab. Thought it was an age think, and that this was it, I was just going to get fatter and fatter. I felt like an old woman. Back in Jan 2017 I knew I had to try again. I knew I could not diet so I decided to take the long term view. I decided to eat 2 meals a day between 12 noon and 8pm, eat what I like at those two meals, walk at least 10,000 steps a day. If I had a bit of a heavy meal one day I would eat less at the next meal, self regulating. If Inwent for a really long walk, I might have a slice of cake. Still drank alcohol three times a week.

The result - 2 stone off in a year. Really slow but easy weight loss, no fuss. Exercise is good but it is all about calorie intake. I rarely get hungry now and I am still losing - I will lose another stone this year, very slowly. I am now 52, face has not gone gaunt due to slow loss, and I look better than I have done in years, skin looks better too. I am always going to eat this way now. I feel rebooted!

It is harder to lose weight when you are older, but it can be done. You need less calories unfortunately!

OliviaD68 · 18/01/2018 18:43

@ppeatfruit

I'll never disagree that you lost weight. I'm 100% sure you did.

But this does not make rice (brown or white, barely any difference) or fruit (fructose) any better for you.

Main issue goes back to the hormonal impact - insulin - and the knock effect this has elsewhere.

Of course if these are small amounts then it won't impact health negatively. Eat and enjoy! I do too occasionally just because I want to, but I do know it needs to be in limited quantities

YearOfYouRemember · 19/01/2018 10:19

Does anyone have any proven theories as to whether the breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper suggestion has any truth in it as a weight loss then maintain plan?

ppeatfruit · 19/01/2018 11:11

Oh come on Olivia Fresh ,in season, organic fruit has fibre, vitamins, (lemons are packed with vitamin C I put a whole one in my morning smoothie) and minerals. My gums don't bleed any more since using the skin and pith and all of an organic lemon blended with ground almonds, linseeds and seasonal fruit every day!

How would gorillas exist if fruit was just fructose? That's all they eat with leaves and a couple of insects!

year I don't think that there is ONE way of eating that suits everyone!!! I don't eat after 7.30 pm till I feel hungry the next day usually around 10ish that suits me!

ppeatfruit · 19/01/2018 11:17

There was a story told about two islands in the Pacific Olivia The people on one were ill all the time. On the other they were all healthy ! The scientists worked out the only difference was that on the healthy island the people ate 'whole' rice!

Sorry I can't link, but google might have the details (unless the white rice manufacturers have go there first!).

TalkinPeace · 19/01/2018 13:03

Olivia
Do give over on the food groups being bad for you rubbish.
Fruit is not bad for you.
Rice (even white rice) is not bad for you

Payfrozen · 19/01/2018 13:46

Yes agree. It would be a real pity if this lovely thread gets derailed with technical debates. Frankly i dont care how people get where they want as long as they get there. Different things work for different people and it's good to share experiences.

The point of eating and living well is to be happy and healthy. If it makes people feel miserable or argue with each other that's defeating the object.

ppeatfruit · 19/01/2018 14:02

It's good to discuss issues constructively though Pay We all have different ways to lose weight and maintain!

OliviaD68 · 19/01/2018 16:14

@ppeatfruit and @TalkinPeace

I don't agree.

It isn't that either rice or fruit causes immediate death! And I do agree that fruit has very beneficial nutrients. But so do green veggies.

My vantage point is this.

There are foods that have varying degrees of nutritional benefit.

The problem with consuming larger quantities of rice and/or fruit is the impact on insulin. I won't comment on gorillas because they are herbivores and not human so I have no idea how they metabolise macro nutrients.

But the impact on humans of raised levels of blood insulin (and blood glucose which causes the insulin spike in the first place) is clearly not good for you from a number of different perspectives whether fat accumulation, association with metabolic diseases like cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's etc.

This is simply how we work as humans.

Clearly the impact these have on your health will depend on how much you eat, how often you eat and when you eat. And not all fruit are created equal. Berries have low
Glycemic indices for example.

But a comparison of fruit and rice with say courgettes or broccoli as alternatives should allow to assess what I mean. Veggies don't cause insulin spikes nearly as high as fructose. And you get the nutrients you validly point out are extant in fruit (rice ... not so much).

Hope this helps.

ppeatfruit · 19/01/2018 16:23

We are of course all humans but we have differing reactions to different foods. e.g. red meat makes me physically ill. Other are fine with it in moderation.

I eat my fruit with almonds and linseeds it is brilliant! Might not be great for everyone else btw I have extremely good health, the dentist and docs are v. pleased with me Grin

ppeatfruit · 19/01/2018 16:26

Oh and one generally cooks vegetables (except salad of course which I have for lunch every day). therefore losing some of the goodness in the water etc.

Iam not an advocate of a raw diet though Grin

TalkinPeace · 19/01/2018 16:28

olivia
Oh do give over.
Rice is one of the world's staple crops
it is the prime source of nutrition for millions of people who do not have diabetes
because they do not overeat

Rice will not give you diabetes.
Overeating and snacking and grazing no matter what you eat probably will

OliviaD68 · 19/01/2018 16:34

@TalkinPeace

Whatever works for you.

I’m finding this thread very useful and grateful to the OP for starting it. I’ve got to the stage where maintenance is hopefully at sight sometime later this year. Have always been thinking on how I’ll be maintaining but I think this has made me realise that maintaining at 48 whilst still having periods is going to be easier than a few years time when through menopause. Off to see a Consultant next month as have a troublesome fibroid and I guess there might be a chance I need surgery and want to be as close to normal BMI as possible if that happens.

Finally got round to watching the original 5.2 Horizon program. Over the years the info contained in it has been around but it was really interesting and as my Mum died of Dementia and Breast cancer I’ve decided I’d be foolish to ignore it. Did an 800 calorie day yesterday to start with which went well and found it has sort of reset my appetite today and stopped me snacking. Am planning to repeat next Monday and Thursday and will see how that goes.

Thanks Ta1kinpeace, I’ll go over and have a look.

YearOfYouRemember · 19/01/2018 18:06

I've been having chilli flakes on my new lunch inventions as I'd heard it can speed up ones metabolism. Have to make sure I have water by me as sometimes I put a tad too much on Grin.

pontiouspilates · 19/01/2018 18:22

Almost 50 and cannot shift the weight. I really could lose a stone - tried Slimming World and did lose 4lbs but the whole philosophy of the diet didn't sit right with me. I run 3-4 times per week and regularly hit my 10k steps per day. I enjoy my wine but otherwise have a fairly healthy diet. I notice that I rarely feel 'full' and could go for seconds after most evening meals, yet at my age I'm aware that I'm supposed to be reducing calorie intake.

TalkinPeace · 19/01/2018 19:00

Pontious
I really can recommend 5:2
as it fits with any eating habits
and the fasting does seem to hit the visceral fat pretty hard - which is what we like at our age
