Am I eating too much fruit and therefore not losing weight?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here could help me answer the question of why I'm not losing weight (and always feel hungry!).
I currently weigh 11 st (70 kgs) but ideally would like to get rid of 11 pounds. My weight seems to be stuck and fluctuates between 68-70kgs (and has been like that for at least a year). I don't feel overweight, but I used to be slimmer (before DD) and just want to feel better about my shape.
I exercise (usually a mix of HIIT, weights, some cardio, but not too much unless I go for a run) usually 3-4 times a week for about 40 mins (can only do evenings after DD goes to bed)
I don't smoke, barely ever drink alcohol (I'd say once a month), barely ever (less than once in two months) get a takeaway. I don't eat out, cook all my lunches (bar an occasional sushi from Wasabi once every fortnight) and dinners from scratch. Don't keep any sweets at home and I don't really eat any sugary snacks/fizzy drinks etc.
I would say I eat clean and healthy most of the time with an occasional treat once in a while. Yet I'm not losing weight and feel like I'm hungry all the time so feel like snacking at work (doesn't help we're not too busy at the moment, I don't do a lot of snacking when busy!).

I usually have:
Breakfast: overnight oats with chia seeds, almond/cashew/coconut milk and some berries (plus 1 Tbsp honey or agave for sweetness) or smoothie (usually banana plus some frozen fruit and almond milk) -
with homemade granola (1/3 cup). On Sat/Sun I'd have some boiled or scrambled eggs, rye bread and avocado instead :D Love my eggs and avocado!
Snack: carrots and houmous (about 1 heaped Tbsp so it's not like I'm pigging out!) or cucumber and cottage cheese
Lunch: usually a salad made at home: e.g. roasted sweet potato, spinach, tomatoes, avocado, some black beans, a bit of olive oil or I'll have a salad with brown rice, edamame, spinach, avocado and smoked salmon with a tamari dressing. That kind of stuff.
Snack: greek yoghurt with berries and honey usually
Dinner: either some made turkey meatballs with tomato sauce and wholemeal pasta or turkey chilli with avocado and brown rice or some salmon and prawn curry with mange tout and courgette etc.
Snack (I am starving after exercising): sometimes greek yoghurt with berries, sometimes banana with peanut butter, sometimes apple.

I can see from this that I might be eating too much fruit.
I also drink lots of water and green tea (no black tea and only occasionally coffee). Where am I going wrong? I'm tempted to see a nutritionist/dietitian but scared I'll spend money to hear I need to eat wholemeal rather than white carbs, no processed food, no sugar etc, which is something I already know hmm

I'd be grateful for any feedback, I'm getting sick and tired of reading stories of people who give up one thing and miraculously lose weight!

Your age might also impact, as we get older we naturally lose some muscle mass and metabolism slows down. If I ate your diet I'd quickly gain weight. Try missing out breakfast (don't believe any crap about it kickstarting metabolism) and replace the snacks with 1/2 litre of water. I lost 2 1/2 st by mostly eating just one meal a day with fruit (apple, peach or pear) or protein for a couple of snacks (slice of chicken or small cube of cheese). My resting metabolism is only around 1300 cals, I run most days to allow myself to eat a little more. If I don't, I put weight on. It's a bit grim but true, I'm nearly 50 btw and bmi is around 24

But you don't need more of it. And lower fat versions of dairy products tend to have more calories due to natural sugars!

Okay. Now compare the calories, fat, carbs and sugars of 100g of each kind. The natural yogurt is higher in sugars. The Greek yogurt is higher in fat.

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2017 18:36

It's sugar that raises insulin and in some people that means more fat being laid down than if a higher fat product had been eaten.

Ino addition to the calorie bombs mentioned by the others, I'd add Chia seeds. I don't know how many you put in, but 100g is nearly 500 cals. You need to be weighing stuff and eating less. Three square meals plus three snacks is actually heaps, regardless of your exercise.

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2017 18:52

I think the problem is you are comparing weight rather than volume. HTH

It's sold in grams...... HTH. Wink

RiversDisguise · 24/06/2017 18:54

Not that blood 800 calorie diet again. Eating disorder territory. Shamelessly luring in the crash dieting crowd. Is there any diet that Mosley won't flog? Confused

RiversDisguise · 24/06/2017 18:54

bloody*

memyselfandisolodjsjajaj · 24/06/2017 19:01

Cut the carbs (potatoes & rice) for at least 2 weeks if you're not losing any weight with your otherwise v. Healthy diet

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2017 19:03

Yeah. Bastard actually using recent scientific research to inform eating rather than out of date bollocks. All those thousands of people no longer on diabetes meds must be furious.

If anything it's an antedote to an eating disorder.

Wow, so many comments! Thank you!
so many in fact, that I don't know where to start. I have been eating like this for about two years and my weight hasn't changed which makes sense, so I totally agree that to lose weight I would need to cut down on portion size as well as carbs which is actually what I started doing today.

Regarding my portion size for Greek yoghurt for example I use half a cup, and have a cup of berries. For oats it's usually half a cup as well which in hindsight is probably too much, I use 2 tablespoons of Chia seeds which is 16 g (I weighed it this morning to check). For rice I usually do half a cup of cooked rice, slightly more for pasta. Etc. I see now that I eat too many carbs and will definitely cut down and up my protein intake so that I feel fuller. I will also cut out the last snack. I cannot imagine giving breakfast up, but I will try to replace oats with yoghurt with flaxseed and berries/ mashed banana or eggs (save avocado for weekends, yes. This will save me lots of money hahah).
I also don't want to do any extreme dieting. I'm not surprised that you lost so much weight TittyGolighty (well done by the way!) I would imagine it's to be expected if you were only eating 800 cals. I don't think I would be able to focus on anything if I was to wait for my breakfast until 11.

Lol at the bodybuilder comment, I don't mind and it made me chuckle! Grin

Good point about the smoothies, although I would also make them with spinach to balance the sugar. I didn't find them filling so will ditch them and save for special occasions.

Posting now so I don't lose that wall of text hahah

I physically can't eat in the morning hence the late breakfast. It's not a requirement of the diet. I'm a night owl so my body and brain don't like admitting they're awake before noon. 😁

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2017 20:22

I could, but I need the fat. :)

It's okay, thanks.

TittyGolightly · 24/06/2017 20:24

One of the problems with smoothies is that the cell walls of the fruit are broken by the process of making them into a smoothie, meaning that the sugars hit your blood stream even faster (fructose is the fastest sugar to do this already).

Likewise oats. Rolled oats have had their cells damaged by the processing, making the sugar more available sooner in the digestive process. Steel cut oats are better (if you must have oats).

Ugh, half a cup of berries! Not a cup lol.

Anyway, this is what I ate today, I think a bit better and I actually feel satisfied and not hungry - result! Not ideal but I think an improvement?

Breakfast: 40g oats with 16g chia and 100 ml unsweetened almond milk plus 1/3 cup raspberries (and teaspoon agave and yes I will eventually cut it out Grin

Snack wasn't ideal but it was a kabanos (semi dried sausage - damn doesn't sound appealing but delicious - high in fat so i realise not the best and it wouldn't be a regular addition to my menu). I also tried two macadamia nuts (damn they are good and I know, high in fat)
Lunch was half gem lettuce and half cup spinach with 100 g almond meal crusted chicken breast, tomatoes, quarter of avocado, roasted Brussels sprouts, tender stem broccoli and 30 g of feta cheese - this kept me going for a long time. Snack was apple. Dinner was delicious (recipe from Food medic book): cod with tsp pesto wrapped in parma ham with courgette, peppers, tomatoes, red onion and 1 baby potato - next time I'll put more courgettes and give all my potatoes to DH and DD. No snack. Water and green tea all day and I feel pretty great.

What do you reckon? Improvement?

I'm really grateful for the comments and I think writing on this board was the final kick up the bum i needed to understand that I eat healthy stuff but too much of it. So thanks again! I will post my weekly menu later and hope to get your feedback on what I can change/improve.
