Is my excessive sweating because being overweight?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this..

Over the last couple of years I've experienced excessive sweating, mainly just my head/face/neck.
I'm literally dripping when it happens, which is usually during any form of exercise, even walking.

My weight has gradually crept up over the years and I'm now 194lbs at 5ft 9.

I am desperately trying to lose weight and it's coming off veeerry slowly....

Could this ridiculous amount of sweating be down to just being overweight?
Has anyone else experienced similar and found improvements after losing?

I wonder this too.
Have you had medical tests done to rule out any other problems? This kind of thing does need investigating imo.

Snap8TheCat · 01/06/2017 14:29

I'm not sure. I'm much more overweight than you and I don't sweat. I get hot from physical exertion quite quickly but no sweat, occasionally damp pits and creases but that's it.

I wonder if it could be hormone related? Maybe a trip to the Gp?

cushioncovers · 01/06/2017 14:31

I'm really overweight and I don't sweat like that. In fact my very slim friend has constant wet sweat patches on her clothes (under arm) and I don't. So it's not all about weight.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 01/06/2017 14:33

I am also 5ft 9 and used to weigh quite a bit more than you. I didn't sweat to that extent, no. In fact probably no more than I do now.

I would also recommend seeing your GP to rule out other possible causes.

ohforfoxsake · 01/06/2017 14:33

I think so. I definitely sweat more (am at my fattest at the mo, a good two stone over weight). I'm noticing a few niggling things (like my knees hurting, my back, can't wear heels, not enjoying sex, as well as sweatiness, thigh chafing, clothes uncomfortable). I'm getting upset with myself for doing his to myself, which isn't helping. Self-esteem is low, eating, back on the miserable cycle.

It's shit. Sorting it out with immediate effect.

AuntieStella · 01/06/2017 14:36

It is possibly related.

Well done on your weight loss! Keep with it, irrespective of whether it solves your sweating problem.

Could I ask your age? Because another possibility is the menopause.

SomeOtherFuckers · 01/06/2017 14:40

It's very possible but I also had an ex who suddenly started doing this same thing - really bad sweating. He was 6'4 and a very normal weight - his doctor prescribed him some special deodorant and it stopped it . Alternatively Botox works x

Mudmagnetoftheworld · 01/06/2017 14:40

I did go to the doctor several months ago about a separate problem and mentioned this along with lack of energy.
She did a series of blood tests which didn't really shed any light.
I'm not menopausal and thyroid levels were on the low side, but not low enough to warrant treatment.

When the weather is warm (which I used to love!) I feel like I can't move let along exercise. Just can't tolerate the heat at all.

I did buy a special spray that you put on at night, then wash off in the morning. It did help a little but because the problem is my face and head and I've got long hair. It's a right faff.
Underarm sweating is fairly normal I'd say.

Don't think I'd want to go down the Botox route!

Maudlinmaud · 01/06/2017 14:46

I'm slightly underweight at the moment which is also bad and do tend to sweat quite a bit. I use stuff from the chemist to stop this every so often. It's just my underarms but you can use this stuff on sweaty palms too.

Lofari · 01/06/2017 14:48

Watching this with interest as I am in exactly the same boat. Even doing the school walk in slight heat fills me with dread as I know when I arrive I'll look like I've just stepped out the shower it's so embarassing.
I too have had blood tests which showed nothing of interest.

flissfloss65 · 01/06/2017 14:50

My weight yo yo's quite a bit. Last year I hardly swested but this year and two stone heavier my brow and back really drip with sweat. Two weeks in trying to lose weight. The heat is horrid.

ShelaghTurner · 01/06/2017 14:53

If it's even slightly hot I'm dripping. My head gets sweaty and my hair looks like it's wet, I absolutely hate it. Yes am overweight, more so than the OP.

Aftershock15 · 01/06/2017 14:58

I think it's weight related as I also seem to have a very sweaty face in summer/ when I exercise and am similar weight. I take a towel when I exercise.

ggirl · 01/06/2017 15:05

sweaty head here too , I thought it was age related as I've had it since perimenopause , I am now menopausal .

My weight hasn't changed much and I am overweight but the sweating only started in perimenopause

ShelaghTurner · 01/06/2017 15:14

My sweaty head started two years ago maybe. I'm now 45 so possibly perimenopausal. Hot all the time too, even in winter.

AnniesShop · 01/06/2017 15:17

I'm the same OP, it's awful and makes me feel like I'm
going to pass out. It's down to me being hypothyroid.

Your thyroid levels may well be within range now but
a few years ago the ranges were lowered quite a bit so
someone now wouldn't be diagnosed hypothyroid where
they would have been previously.

Mudmagnetoftheworld · 01/06/2017 15:39

That's interesting AnniesShop, I was borderline then the second test was just within range.

Can hypothyroidism cause this?
Are you being treated?

Think I'll have to loose a couple of stone then go back to GP if no better.
It really is mainly my head/neck/face. I feel it running down my face and my hair's soaked. But no sweaty underarms, palms or even feet.

I'm ok if don't move...which won't help the weight loss!

Mudmagnetoftheworld · 01/06/2017 15:49

Notanurse - I'd say averagely fit. I walk/hike and am trying to get fitter for that.

I did wonder if I could get fitter it might help.

Are you on any medication? some can make you sweat more, sertraline for example can give you awful night sweats.

Mudmagnetoftheworld · 01/06/2017 16:22

Cushion- No nothing....

AnniesShop · 01/06/2017 17:22

Hi Mud, yes, I'm being treated. I've had diagnosed hypothyroidism
for 9 or 10 years now.
Maybe try checking out some of the Thyroid forums and asking
on there, this kind of sweating is not uncommon among people who have a metabolic disease - you'll get advise about tests etc too.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 01/06/2017 17:29

Fat is insulating, keeps the warm in.
Anxiety (because you're sweating?)Grin
High blood sugar.
Menopause.

I've started the blood sugar diet by Micheal Mosely. I am sweating far less and I've lost nearly 3 inches from my waist in 3 weeks.

Amazon sell fans, the folded ones not an electric plug in one! I keep one in my bag.

I'm sweaty, running, like men sweat! I went to the doctor and they gave me blood tests. All normal so I put it down to being 4 stone overweight and having anxiety. Also anxiety causes insulin resistance in muscles.
