Has anyone tried the 8 week blood sugar diet

frogsgoladidahdidah · 09/04/2017 13:33

My mum bought me the book, and am just reading it. I have a significant amount to lose, but am shocked at 800kcals a day.

Looking to hear (honest) inspirational stories, please!

Then it might be worth you reading up on the Blood Sugar diet then Hmm

There's some very solid science behind it - Professor Roy Taylor of Newcastle University has been working on this for a long time, and it's a way that can revers Type 2 diabetes.

toffeeboffin · 09/04/2017 16:00

Thanks titty Smile

TittyGolightly · 09/04/2017 16:01

The restricted calories is scientifically proven to reset the way the body deals with insulin. It's not for the sake of it.

Please read up on it before you dismiss it. It's doing amazing things for people with diabetes.

Oblomov17 · 09/04/2017 16:05

KingsCross 800 and the fact it is very low carb is specific because it has been proven from research that the effects, insulin wise, are dramatic.

Please read the research before you dismiss again.

frogsgoladidahdidah · 09/04/2017 17:49

Thank you so much for your thoughts! I am going on holiday on Wednesday, and after that, I shall be ready to start! I think I will give it a whirl, have been researching the insulin and drs claims about it. Very interesting as I shake if I haven't eaten regularly, (but am not diabetic) and I am clearly choosing the wrong things to eat.

Off to check out diet threads...

But the OP wasn't asking about the diet to reset insulin processing, she was asking about it to lose weight. There are much easier ways to lose weight without restricting your calories to 800 a day. Fair enough if it has a benefit medically then give it a go, but for the ordinary person who just wants to lose weight? Hardly ideal.

TittyGolightly · 09/04/2017 20:07

I'm not diabetic or pre diabetic. I don't have PCOS. I do have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (which is caused by carbs). I want to lose 5-6 stone in total. This diet works.

The 2000/2500 cals a day standard is outdated: the majority don't work in manual jobs anymore, and we don't need that number of calories to sustain us.

TittyGolightly · 09/04/2017 20:08

There's obviously some reason the OP is interested in this way of eating (it's not a diet - it should be a lifestyle change).

BIWI · 09/04/2017 20:12

The title of the thread is a bit of a giveaway: Has anyone tried the 8 week blood sugar diet. And you responded immediately by saying it is a silly fad diet.

Yes, there might be easier ways to lose weight - but that wasn't what she was asking!

Loubilou09 · 09/04/2017 20:38

Kingscross you are coming across as a bit of a Dick to be honest. Unless you have tried the diet and understand the diet perhaps it's best to keep your ignorant and misinformed opinions to yourself.

I think SW and the like are FAR harder and i have tried both.

frogsgoladidahdidah · 09/04/2017 20:56

My mum has sought out this diet because, whilst we don't have diabetes, several close family members and I shake if we do not have regular food intakes. Which indicates blood sugar issues.

I have a few stones to lose, am not massively active due to my job, and live abroad so difficult to access SW/WW. And they don't really interest me...

Hence, the interest in this diet...

Titty, if it is ok, I will PM you. Can't seem to find the appropriate section for other threads?

OP posts:
TittyGolightly · 09/04/2017 20:58

Of course. :)

BIWI · 09/04/2017 21:17

If you were to cut right down on your carbs, and increase your protein and fat intake, you should find that those episodes will drop dramatically.

kingscrossnoodle · 09/04/2017 21:36

Yup. I'm a dick because I disagree Confused

KatieKaboom · 09/04/2017 21:59

Posting in support of kings.

I think calling her a dickhead or whatever is completely uncalled for.

If you think starving yourself to 800 cals (which is less than half of what the working inmates of Auschwitz had) is a good idea, then that's your lookout.

I understand this diet is good for people who have diabetes and prediabetes.

However, you are surely going to lose significant muscle on such a VLC diet. If you're a woman, and don't have the medical advice to go on this diet, you'd have to be barking to do that. It is so incredibly hard for women to build muscle back. You're going to get weak, lose functional fitness, reduce your metabolic rate and look flabby at the same weight of someone else who has been patient, done a slow weight liss plan with a modest calorie reduction and had proper nutrition and done strength training to minimise muscle loss.

This diet is DEFINITELY going to appeal to the crash dieting crowd and it's disingenuous to pretend otherwise. It's frustrating to see people do this to themselves. So unhealthy and so unnecessary!

TittyGolightly · 09/04/2017 22:01

I have more muscle than I did 14 weeks ago when I started the BSD. 🤔

KatieKaboom · 09/04/2017 22:15

Not possible.

Wondermoomin · 09/04/2017 22:16

Titty that's a brilliant achievement! I wish I had the "sticking power". I've read the BSD book and it is so interesting to read the science and evidence behind it and how the NHS advice remains woefully outdated.

Perhaps I'll have another look at it and might actually give it a go.

It's obviously going really well for you, so don't let the detractors bother you - it doesn't sound like they've read much (if anything) about it so are not really coming from a place of knowledge.

TittyGolightly · 09/04/2017 22:17

Well, it's true.

Must be the protein and weight training.

TittyGolightly · 09/04/2017 22:18

I won't be put off by them, don't worry! It's my stubbornness that's kept me going despite daily temptations from the colleagues and their doughnuts, cookies etc!

Message me if you need any help with it.

It's based on reducing carbs, not simply just cutting your calories, which means that you train your body to burn fat rather than use carbs for energy.

If you're burning up fat, then you're using up your body fat rather than muscle.

Which is why it's a healthier way to lose weight.

KatieKaboom · 09/04/2017 22:24

Possibly you've reduced your body fat percentage, which is not the same as building new muscle (and I hope you're not relying on those machines for your readings).

I don't want to get on your case tbh because the strength training etc is all fabulous and positive but you are not building muscle on 800 calories (even if you were totally unfit before and these are the classic beginner's gains).

KatieKaboom · 09/04/2017 22:26

Janiston, rations for labouring men at Auschwitz were 1700 cal a day.

MyOtherDogIsAPorsche · 09/04/2017 22:26

5 weeks in and 15 lbs lost. I am finding it fairly easy - usually exceed my calories, though not by much but the most revealing thing has been discovering that by not eating sugar I have lost all sugar cravings and so am not feeling starved or cheated......... I know that slimming clubs allow you to have sugar - for me that just makes it more difficult as it perpetuates a problem which, for me, has just gone away. This is not a fad diet, nor is it restrictive - it is a medically proven way to live/eat healthily. 800 cals actually goes a long way if you are eating healthily. I don't think I have felt hungry once.
