Anyone else trying to lose weight whilst breast-feeding?

KitKat1985 · 31/12/2016 11:59

Hello all. DD2 now 7 weeks old. I'm 2 stone heavier than I was pre-baby and feeling really unhappy about it. I'd like to use the New Year to kick-start some weight loss but can't go too drastic as I'm breast-feeding and don't want to mess up my milk supply. I'm largely thinking about cutting back on sugary things which I think is my main downfall, and trying to do some more walking. Problem is I find breast-feeding makes me really hungry which makes the whole process more challenging. I'm determined to do this though, even if it is a gradual process.

Day 1 today, and actually done pretty well, struggled to use all my weight watchers points. Really hope I can keep this up and get out of the habit of eating all night while up feeding

Gingergin · 04/01/2017 20:31

Didn't do that many steps today but I resisted cake and ate well!

humanfemale · 04/01/2017 22:35

I held on to an excess few lbs of weight until I stopped BF. I didn't mind especially, but didn't experience massive weight loss like
some other women seem to. My body definitely kept a wee bit in reserves :)

lilygirl81 · 05/01/2017 13:14

Any tips for the midnight to 6am part of the day? My DD was up almost all night, has been a lot recently, needing to feed or be latched on otherwise screaming. I can just about deal with the lack of sleep, but my stomach was really growling from 3am. I do have some grapes and bananas, but don't really cut it!

athousandsplendidsuns · 05/01/2017 13:25

Lilygirl what about those nairns oatcakes - they come in sweet and savoury and can be quite filling? Not sure on the calories though.

plinkyplonkyploo · 05/01/2017 13:29

Joining this late. My baby is 8 months old and I've lost 1.5 stone in the last 3 months. I lost 2 stone in the first 2 months or so then stalled. What's worked for me is no snacking at all, but eating nice meals. I am eating more cake / chocolate than I ought to but only at meals. Once you get into the habit of not snacking it's fine. But drink lots of water. I now weigh less than I did pre pregnancy and am still losing.

Slothlikesundays · 05/01/2017 14:01

Amazing weightloss plinky!
Lily - how about slices of apple with a little bit of peanut/almond butter spread on it? It has the healthy fats we need but feels a little bit naughty. As long as you don't slather it on thick it's fairly healthy.
Yesterday was a really good day. Ate well and walked 4 miles.
Today seems to be going to plan. Walked 3 miles.
I roasted a chicken yesterday so had chicken salad for tea last night. Will use the leftovers for a chicken and lentil curry tonight.
Blitzed the house this morning which felt like a workout in itself vaccing with baby in a sling!

KitKat1985 · 05/01/2017 17:47

Well done on the weight loss Plinky! Am also trying to stop snacking. It's hard as we still have so many Christmas treats in the house. Managed not to snack all week though!

Well done Sloth too!

Lily - maybe a couple of rice cakes?

Not doing too bad today. Managed a walk and reasonable food choices in the main although a small amount of chocolate did find it's way into my lunch...

First weigh in this morning. Lost a pound which I'm pleased about. How are you all doing?

Swearwolf · 07/01/2017 09:03

Well done kitkat, that's great! I'm debating whether to weigh myself or wait until next week. I think if I don't see a difference I won't be as motivated next week, even though it's only been six days since I weighed myself so chances are I won't see a difference yet. If I can hold out until next week I might have a chance of seeing the number go down. Argh!

Swearwolf · 07/01/2017 09:15

Noooooooo I've PUT ON 2lbs!!!! How is that possible???

Stumbleine · 07/01/2017 09:43

Hi all, can I join you please?

I am breastfeeding 3 month old ds (number 4). I was overweight pre pregnancy and am now about 1.5 stone above pre pregnancy weight. I have been a complete sugar junkie since the birth and have been mainlining Haagen Daaz like it's going out of fashion! Blush

I want to lose 2.5 stone overall which would be bring me back to my healthy weight of 11.5 stone. I plan to eliminate daily puddings and stop snacking on crap like biscuits/cakes during the day! Have started couch to 5K again this week and have mixed success with the food side of things...

athousandsplendidsuns · 07/01/2017 11:43

Welcome stumbleine. Swearwolf you can write it off as being too early! I try and only weigh myself once a week because of the normal random fluctuations you get day to day. Yesterday was a very bad day.....jam doughnut, creme egg and Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Oops.

Swearwolf · 07/01/2017 12:00

I don't know thousand, I'm hoping it's water weight. I'll resist temptation to weigh again before next week, hopefully it'll even out by then. I'm sad, I've been eating so well all week and I've been so hungry, and it's all for nothing!

athousandsplendidsuns · 07/01/2017 12:41

I think it will show in the long run Swearwolf ... It's like weight gain sometimes when you pig out for few days with no weight gain then it catches up with you a week later. Well done kitkat. I think I'm going to weigh on weds morning. My weight does look bad if baby hasn't fed recently though, so maybe I ll have to do weds and thurs and take the average!!

KitKat1985 · 07/01/2017 13:17

Welcome stumbleine.

Swearwolf I'm guessing water weight. Give it a week and try again.

Athousand - my first thought when I read your post was 'oooh, crème eggs are back'! Then I remembered I was supposed to be losing weight!

Well done kitkat. And swearwolf it probably is just water!
Terrible day over here. Pie and chips and a roast dinner. Only walked 2 miles. Back on it tomorrow!

Stumbleine · 07/01/2017 20:22

Thanks for the welcome Smile
Well I'm about to climb down off the wagon and have just bought a tub of ice cream for later!

Swearwolf · 08/01/2017 08:20

OK I'm going to stop weighing myself, I think I might take measurements instead. I just weighed myself again, I couldn't resist, and even though everything is the same as yesterday (after breakfast, just been to the toilet, took pyjamas off, same spot on the bathroom floor) I'm 4lb down on yesterday, 2lb down overall. Bad scales!

I also fell off the wagon yesterday, I ate most of a lindt reindeer. How is everyone else getting on?

Stumbleine · 08/01/2017 08:23

That's great news Swearwolf!

It is tempting to be hopping on the scales...I'm waiting until tomorrow now. Managed to get two thirds of the way down my ice cream tub last night Hmm. It's a run day today so hopefully can balance it off (a bit!)

KitKat1985 · 09/01/2017 10:25

Ahh that's good Swearwolf. I think sometimes the scales play tricks on us. I always weigh more the next day if I've eaten something particularly salty the day before, as I think I just end up retaining loads of fluid.

I didn't do brilliantly over the weekend, but it wasn't awful either and I continued to avoid snacking and sugary crap.

Back on the wagon today!

Swearwolf · 10/01/2017 10:41

How is everyone getting on?

I've inevitably loosened up a little, so need to get back on it. Over the weekend I had a few biscuits, some chocolate, two glasses of wine on Sunday night. Generally have been eating a bit more than last week. But on the flip side, I'm still eating a reasonably healthy breakfast (overnight oats on a school day, porridge with fruit and honey otherwise), drinking a few cups of green tea a day (which makes for plenty of poops a day, which has to be a good thing) instead of lots of milky coffees, not eating bits of the children's dinner while I'm making it, not having puddings, and keeping snacks to a minimum (ie one biscuit not five). So I think I'll lose less this week but I'm feeling quite OK. Next to up the exercise.

KitKat1985 · 10/01/2017 10:55

Well done Swearwolf. I think gradually implementing changes is the best way. Trying to do too much at once just gets a bit unmanageable.

I'm trying to walk each day (but hard to always find the motivation when it's cold and raining). Just done my big online Tesco shop and made an effort to order more sensible choices and no cream cakes! I figure if they're not in the house then I can't have a moment of weakness and eat them!

happypoobum · 12/01/2017 18:43

For the first three/four months I found I didn't lose much weight ( EBF two DC for 14 months each) but beyond that, the weight literally fell off me with no effort whatsoever.

I think I lost three dress sizes in about six months, just through EBF. Still ate chocolate etc. Maybe I was just lucky?

KitKat1985 · 13/01/2017 13:50

Oh that gives me hope happy. Well done!

Not doing too bad this week, but there have been 2 mince pies and some chocolate consumed. Have generally been making sensible choices though. Some of my walking plans haven't quite come to fruition though (not helped by the cold and rain). Next weigh in tomorrow. Wish me luck!
