I can remember feeling like that when dd was born - slightly unreal, the feeling that I was just pretending and it wasn't really happening ... I can imagine how that would be amplified if I'd been through what you have to get him.

It's been nearly six years and I sometimes still feel that way Even once the madness starts to subside you'll probably still feel as if it's all slightly unreal sometimes.

And then you'll get one of those lovely smiles, or a great big snuggly hug, or they throw a wobbler, and you're right back there to reality again!

Don't get too used to walking on non-icy pavements! I ended up flat on my arse on the way from dropping dd off to school today.

Have your cats forgiven you yet, or are they sulking big time?

Must go - he's going to wake up soon and I still have 2000 bits of mail to get through... AAAAARRGH

JackieNo · 25/01/2007 12:44

And what does Daniel think of the cats? WWB - I'm so paranoid about icy surfaces that I have a pair of shoe chains in my handbag in case it all gets too slippery - one of my most horrible memories is of slipping over on the way to school, and a load of kids in the bus stop opposite laughing at me, whereupon I got up, only to slip over again. I loathe icy pavements.

suejonezisdanielsmummy · 25/01/2007 12:44

one hasn't left my side yet the other has just deigned to come and see me as I'm sitting at the computer with no squawking boy in sight. Daniel adores them (at least Dylan - don;t think he realises Lola exists yet!)

suejonezisdanielsmummy · 25/01/2007 12:45

I have warned my mum that he will be saying "Dylan" before he says "Nanny"

suejonezisdanielsmummy · 25/01/2007 12:46

must go, must go - I had forgotten how addictive this is...

JackieNo · 25/01/2007 12:47

oh yes - I get the forgetting they're there thing too, then sometimes I have the opposite a moment of panic wondering where in the house they are when I'm there on my own.

WigWamBam · 25/01/2007 13:01

Jackie ... where did you get your shoe chains from? I detest walking on ice, I always slip and I hurt myself pretty badly this time last year. It was so embarrassing, thick sheet ice all over the pavement, slipped on someone's drive, couldn't get myself back up again, and then the guy from the house I was outside came and had a sweary rant at me because I was in the way and he wanted to get his car out. I actually get to the point where I'm in tears if it rains in the evening because I know it will freeze and I still have to walk dd to school. If the ice chains are effective I think I should get myself a set.

Sue, cats are weird. Ours took one look at dd and decided there and then she was having nothing to do with her ... and still won't come anywhere near. Dd gets really upset because she adores the cat and is always really gentle with animals, but Nell is having none of it even now. Yet my old cat was really maternal; I swear that when my little sister was born the cat thought she was hers and was protective of her all her life. I remember the cat chasing my sister up and down the road wailing her head off in great distress when my sister got her first pair of roller skates - it was just like a paranoid, nagging mother.

WWB, you poor thing. Are you OK?

I have the £5 ones - I bought 2 pairs - one lives in my handbag, the other in my car's glove compartment. AS long as you're wearing dark shoes, they're pretty inconspicuous too. Have to say, I've had them a couple of years, and only needed to use them once, but I do feel a lot more confident just knowing they're there. They worked fine, btw.

WigWamBam · 25/01/2007 13:11

Pride is dented more than anything else, I think! My knee is sore and I have a bruise on my bottom but I'm otherwise OK.

Just off to peruse the shoe chains ... thanks for the link.

WigWamBam · 25/01/2007 13:15

They charge £5.50 for the postage and packing on an order for less than a fiver

Are they the same weight as a small child, or are they just taking the pee?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 25/01/2007 13:17

Just taking the pee, I'm afraid! YOu might be able to find that sort of thing in outdoors sort of shops, Millets and the like? Any of those near you?

JackieNo · 25/01/2007 13:19

This seems to include free delivery. I did actually buy them from the first place I linked to.

WigWamBam · 25/01/2007 13:27

Ah - free delivery sounds better

I must admit that I'd have ordered them from there too, if you hadn't found the free delivery site so quickly ...

OP posts:
JackieNo · 25/01/2007 13:29

I think I was so happy to have found something that might help I didn't care! And that may have been why I ordered 2 pairs, too, to make the postage costs seem more worthwhile.

CheesyFeet · 25/01/2007 14:03

God I'm hungry. AF is due and that always plays havoc with my appetite.

I have change in my purse and the chocolate machine is but a few short steps away from my desk...

...oh god this is so hard sometimes.

Sue, my cat ignored dd until she could chase him. Now he tolerates her but is generally patient with her poking and prodding and attempts to dress him up in hats etc. He has swiped her a couple of times, but only when she (inadvertantly) hurts him.

I think its good for children to grow up with pets. It teaches them to be gentle and to respect animals.

JackieNo and WWB - sorry but pmsl @ the shoe chains (with a slight leaning towards buying myself a pair!)

JackieNo · 25/01/2007 14:14

I know CheesyFeet. But I'd rather be laughed at for wearing shoe chains than be laughed at for falling over, so it's the lesser of two evils.

CheesyFeet · 25/01/2007 14:15

point taken!

WigWamBam · 25/01/2007 14:16

Am actually toying with the idea of the heavy duty ones ... do the lighter-weight ones really work, Jackie?

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 25/01/2007 14:33

I could do with them now, actually ... am off to the post office with a big, big, big box and the chances of me staying upright on the ice whilst trying to carry this enormous parcel are pretty slim!

OP posts:
Littlefish · 25/01/2007 15:40

Well,

suejonezisdanielsmummy · 25/01/2007 17:17

Shoe chains - now you tell me about shoe chains - I could have dne with them over the past three months.

suejonezisdanielsmummy · 25/01/2007 17:18

Think I may have lost weight too but need to get to a Boots to check.

How have you all been doing - I've missed you all.

suejonezisdanielsmummy · 25/01/2007 17:19

I'm trying to stop my mum giving Daniel a biscuit every time he cries - she bought a packet of rich tea biscuits for him yesterday! Shades of things to come methinks...
