Really struggling to get protein, help please?

user1465023742 · 04/06/2016 08:08

Really desperate for some help about my food. I'm having a problem getting enough protein. Protein is the only thing that fills me up properly but I have a very limited budget as I'm on disability benefits and I just can't afford to eat meat or fish every day. I can't eat cheese because I have migraines. Quorn is out because I'm allergic to mushrooms, I can't have eggs because I'm allergic to the white so things like omlettes and scrambled eggs are out. That leaves lentils, which I do like, but the only way I know how to make them is in things like bolognese which i can't have because I'm allergic to tomatoes.

I'm really really struggling and surviving on carbs, which are just making me fatter and fatter and I'm constantly hungry because carbs leave me starving after 2 hours. What can I do?

People who know what they're talking about? Are you a doctor, BIWI? A dietician? A health professional? Do you have a degree in a medical subject? Or are you just quoting nonsense you've read in the Daily Mail?

Please. The only person being rude here is you, by continuing to try to push your agenda onto someone who's not interested in it.

Hmm

You're back.

Why? What are you getting out of this thread other than telling people that they're all wrong and just don't understand?

I think if you started a thread asking for mnetters who had lost weight and improved their health as a direct result of BIWI to come forward, you'd soon realise that she does know what she's talking about and goes to massive time and effort to share that knowledge with others for very little thanks.

Personally as of today I have lost 11inches from my hips and 9inches from my waist as a direct result of BIWI's help.

I've lost 7kg in the last 10 weeks by sensible eating and lowish carbs. Roughly 1200 calories per day, but several days when I've gone over for whatever reason.

I recognise your symptoms as 'Post-prandial dip' - I used to suffer terribly from it when I was younger, to the point that I would see blue flashing lights in my eyes and be close to passing out. My GP explained it as an over reaction by my body to the food I'd eaten. So, I would eat a very carb heavy meal (because I need carbs for energy, because I keep having these faint spells....), then my blood glucose rises, so my body swings into action and releases a huge whack of insulin to deal with it, but it's a bit too efficient, so my blood glucose drops, so I feel faint and see stars, so I think 'oh I must eat something....so I eat something carb heavy....rinse and repeat.

What's helped me lose weight:

  • Ditch bread altogether

-Ditch rice
-Switch white potatoes and have sweet potatoes instead (lower carb, higher vitamin A)
-Roast vegetables to have with meat (pork belly is cheap and tasty)
-Big salads for lunch

Pretty much any cooked tomato recipe can be replaced by a bit of stock made with marigold bouillon.

How much do you weigh OP?

Would you feel happier if we said "protein" and "healthy fats" instead of just "fat"?

Eg try eating a high protein breakfast because it'll keep you fuller, longer than a carb-based breakfast.

Yiu really are barking up the wrong tree op. And extremely tetchy and rude with it

SolomanDaisy · 10/06/2016 07:23

It wasn't BIWI who was being rude and it wasn't just her you were rude to. You don't seem very happy. Have you considered talking to your GP and asking for some counselling support?

OP
There is often truly expert advice here on Mnet that you would be hard pressed to come across easily in the outside world unless you happened to know just the person to see and then you would need to pay a great deal for the advice most likely.

If you just read what people say, then do a little research of your own to check up you would see just how much os true about protein good fat, low carbohydrates.

In my opinion, most ordinary GPs do not know anything about nutrition as that is not part of their training. They are way behind on all aspects of this subject including the physiological repercussions of different foods on different people.

Please can someone link to Scandinavian diet , or Swedish government heathy diet guidelines , to reassure the OP ?

I need a lesson in how to link.

Try mixing things. If you mix brown rice with those black beans (cheaper if you buy them dried then soak them) that are used Tex-Mex food, then you have an almost perfect source of protein.
Bulk out half a tin of tuna with sweetcorn and a bit of natural yoghurt as a filling for a baked potato - very healthy, full of protein and good diet food.
Sainsbury and Lidl do cheap frozen fish - Sainsbury does five white fillets for less than £2 and lidl does salmon steaks or fish pie mixes of chunky chopped fish cheaply. You can do a brown rice kedgeree with the white fish. Or a fish pie bulked out with peas and carrots with potato on top, that can be healthy if you skip the rich sauce.

Footie
Please can someone link to Scandinavian diet
www.thescandinaviandiet.com/

I need a lesson in how to link

How to link.

  1. Under 'file' press 'new tab'.
  2. Goggle what you are looking for - Scandinavian diet in this case.
  3. Go to the top of the page of the site you have looked up and highlight the whole of the address bar.
  4. While it is highlighted, click the key that says 'cmd' followed immediately by key 'c' (copy)
  5. Go back to your previous tab where your Mnet message box is.
  6. Click your mouse on it so the little black 'ready to write' line shows.
  7. Click the 'cmd' key followed immediately by the 'v' key.
  8. Now the link should show.

I have read the Scandinavian diet Footsie. That is interesting. Thank you for mentioning it. I hope it will reassure the OP.
Now you have mentioned it, I remembering seeing the Finns have completely overhauled the country's health for the better.

Anyone who does not eat meat and fish would need nuts and pulses instead with some nut oils, olive oil. coconut oil and possibly some protein powder to help bump the protein content up of what you are eating (not replace food). Brown Rice protein, Hemp protein are examples. (OP you said these proteins to add are high in calories-no they are not. Please work out the information on the back to see.)

I made some pretty good protein biscuits yesterday, but unfortunately they used peanut butter which I know OP can't eat. Still, there are lots of helpful things on Youtube where various health freaks and body builders show you how to make cheap protein bars. They would be a good way to stave off hunger and blood sugar crashes between meals.

I lost 5 stone on a high fat diet. You (OP) may want to reconsider your stance on this. Did you check out the low carb forum I suggested earlier? I've only eaten Macdonalds once in my life, though I do love a nice oily curry (usually on shredded lettuce). Such a shame you're denying yourself these pleasures, whilst failing to lose the weight you want to. Oh well, up to you :)

Tweaked Kedgeree would be tasty and filling! All you would need to do is discard the egg white part of the boiled egg and maybe reduce the milk content a little if it was a bit too dairy for you. But you'd end up with a filling, protein and carb balanced breakfast-come-lunch meal. Really tasty. Not a tomato in sight!

As you think we're just "quoting the daily mail", this site: www.dietdoctor.com/ is run by a doctor, interviews, diet plans, recipes, and summaries of scientific research are posted by doctors, nutritionists and scientists, and it backs up everything all of us have said, healthy fats and low carb is the best weight loss method.

Everything on this site: authoritynutrition.com/ is backed up by studies which are cited through each blog post - all of which advocate high fat, low carb.

A meal plan written by a doctor - drdavidludwig.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/AlwaysHungry_Simplified-Meal-Plan.pdf you probably can't eat a lot on there but its to prove a point - the menu is high fat, low carb

The results of people following the Whole30 plan, once again supported by scientific evidence, studies are listed in the book (www.whole30.com): www.instagram.com/explore/tags/whole30results/ the plan is whole foods, with each meal consisting of a serving of protein, Fat and vegetables for carbs, it's a moderate fat, moderate carb approach.

Look. If you guys want to stuff yourself with fat, that's completely up to you. I don't. There's nothing wrong with that. I know that losing weight for me involves cutting down on my carbs and increasing my protein. The reason I have been eating so many carbs is because I couldn't afford to eat enough meat/fish and my allergies/intolerances coutned out egg-based protein meals and I had to eat something. Which is EXACTLY why I posted this thread, to get ideas for protein that I could a) eat and b) afford. Not to be bombarded by the pro-fat lobby.

To those of you who offered helpful suggestions of what to do with pulses etc that didn't involve tomatoes, thank you. To those of you who simply want to push their own extremely misguided agenda and apparently can't read what a thread is actually asking, good luck to all of you and your arteries. Didn't the founder of Atkins who espoused just the lifestyle you're recommending have raging heart disease as a result? Yes, yes he did. Wake up.

Gosh you really are blinkered aren't you? Nobody is advocating stuff outlet selves with fat. We are merely saying that a balanced healthy diet needs to contain a decent amount of healthy protein and fat. And that it will make you feel fuller longer.

So we are saying eat avocados, and healthy oils, and bacon for breakfast and stuff like that. We are not saying eat McDonald's and have chip shop chips every night.

You really are an extremely aggressive and rude person on this thread

Chippednailvarnishing · 11/06/2016 10:24

With every post you show just how pig ignorant and antagonistic you are OP. Or you're a GF who posts due to some weird need for negative attention

Dr Robert Atkin died after slipping on an icy pavement and suffering a head injury. The only heart condition he had was apparently cardiomyopathy, which is caused by a virus.

Maybe if you opened your mind you wouldn't be trying to lose weight, as you wouldn't be overweight in the first place. But ultimately your weight, ignorance and lack of manners are your doing and no one else's.
