Starting the no 'S' eating regime today to lose weight, anyone want to join in?

Hi, have got decidedly porky over the past few years.
I feel tired and lethargic, and none of my clothes look good anymore.
I also need to lose weight for health reasons and increase my (currently woeful) level of exercise.

I want to follow a simple and 'do-able' eating plan that is fairly simple and that I will be able to sustain ie hoping to lose 0.5 kg each week.

I'm planning to follow the no 'S' "diet":

book here

A summary of the basic rules is:

no snacks
no sweets (it's an American book so that covers puddings as well as biscuits and confectionary)
no seconds

except on days that start with 's' ie the weekend, and 'special' days ie birthdays and big holidays such as Christmas.

I've got the book so can answer further questions but that is basically it!

I'm going to be using MFP to log calories and I have also found the free NHS weight loss plan (includes exercise) helpful too

see here

I am planning to post my weight here Blush every Sunday too (but that is not obligatory of course).

The other reason for posting on here is that I don't want to bore my family and friends to death about it in rl!! But it would be nice to have some companions along the way Smile.

Anyone want to join in?

Great = greasy (they did taste pretty great though)

rivierliedje · 02/10/2015 16:22

Well done Helen.

I have two more patiënts to see and then I'm going home, exhausted this week.
I was trying to move my wake up time to 6.00, but I don't think it's useful. I'm slower, because I'm more tired and I don't get things done in that time. Plus then I'm so exhausted in the evening that I don't go out for the planned walks along the beach.
So far today my standard:
bf: porridge with pb and pear
linch: hummus sandwhich, carrot, apple
dinner will be a carrot-tomato risotto if I have enough energy to cook, otherwise stuffed aubergines

standclear · 02/10/2015 20:19

Helen well done, like the sound of your menu!

Rivier repeating myself now, but agree, fatigue is so crucial to all of this, particularly when you have a demanding job as you do.

How lovely to be able to walk on the beach in the evenings though (I am confined to city life and loathe that aspect of it - need green fields - do go to lots of parks for dog walking though!!)

B - dry-fried egg on brown bread (and tiny bit of toast with blackcurrant jam)
L - home made lentil/carrotty stewy soup thing with bit of brown bread and cheese
S- didn't feel like eating tonight, wierd virus thing still persisting

I am a sloth when it comes to exercise but have been out for short brisk walks (without dog) yesterday and today.

I had my own falling off the wagon incident last night: had a few (ahem) sherberts at the pub, then came home and just wanted to eat! Probably my body saying I needed to soak up the alcohol. Managed to stick to fruit and veg (ate a pear and then cooked some frozen peas Confused) but I'm just annoyed with myself that I couldn't stick to the rules for even one week. Gah!

I need to take my own advice though, forgive e myself and get back on the wagon without trying to compensate or punish myself.

Apart from that, yesterday was
B - eggwhite and goats cheese omelette
L - bean/veg/egg salad, fruit salad
D - Thai meal out (stir fry & Thai salad, didn't eat any rice/carbs which was probably a bad idea before drinking!)
Bed by 11ish amazingly.

Onwards and upwards.

Very jealous of your walks on the beach rivier!

helentheheron · 03/10/2015 08:00

Oh, and rivier - this may or may not be helpful to you, but lately I have been coming to the conclusion that rest/sleep is just as important as exercise. I have a habit of forcing myself to get up early on my days off to run (I like to run before breakfast) . It does make me feel good and burns calories obviously, but that's no good if I'm shattered for the rest of the day, especially if I then end up eating more to give myself a boost!

Anyway, please ignore my witterings if they are not relevant!

rivierliedje · 03/10/2015 08:59

Yes, I totally understand that Helen, I've decided to not feel guilty about lying in with a book until I want to get up and then go for a run if I feel like it. But most weekends I go for a long walk or bike ride instead. Today I'm going to see a friend, and she lives in a lovely green hilly area (a nice change from the flat, windy beach). So we're going for a ramble. And tomorrow the weather is supposed to stay nice, so I think I'll cycle to the border (and maybe take the tram back)

Stand I know it sounds iddylic, but I live in a city and the beach is lined with ugly sixties-seventies appartment blocks. But at sunset I can ignore that and stare out over the sea :D

rivierliedje · 03/10/2015 09:02

Oh yeah, I've decided to weigh in on saturday, so 63.7kg today. Quite happy with that. Almost a kilo down.

standclear · 04/10/2015 09:26

Oh dear, the shame, am weighing in at 83.5kg this morning (have put weight on from 83.3 kg last week) Blush

It's totally understandable because I did succumb to snacks and my portions are still too big but I do feel I am gradually getting a handle of these things and overall my eating habits have improved.

Also have been having more exercise and have been more active generally.

It's definitely going to be a long haul though!

Objectives for week ahead: definitely try and be more disciplined, not allow myself to get discouraged.

rivierliedje · 04/10/2015 12:08

I'm really short though stand.

It's definitely a long haul thing isn't it. But I like that, because it means it's not faddy or dangerous.

grumpysquash · 04/10/2015 12:46

Hi everyone,

My weigh in was 73.6kg, down from 75kg last week. So an OK first week - just hope it's not all water!

I have managed no sweets (aside from a small piece of cake at a work thing) and mostly no seconds, snacks have been a bit harder to avoid as I often have lunch at work at noon but dinner is not until 7.30pm. But they have at least been healthy snacks (e.g. olives, or a handful of nuts and an apple).

standclear 0.2kg could easily be a fluctuation, so try not to be disheartened. Keep chatting :)

grumpysquash · 04/10/2015 12:47

I'm off to the supermarket now, can I get anything for anyone?

eltsihT · 04/10/2015 15:12

I was 67.9kg on Monday, and am 66.9kg today,

I am really pleased, I have been working really hard at not snacking and have only succumbed when it's been the dc's dinner time. (Every day). I also need to drink more so going to try to drink water when I am peckish.

Hope I can keep it up with my next week. Tomorrow I am going in to have a mole removed so hopefully the stress with that won't distract me.

eltsihT · 04/10/2015 15:14

I had meant to add I am trying to get to 60kg

rivierliedje · 04/10/2015 17:28

Well done Eltsiht and grumpy.
I've used my ticky box thingy to see where the problems are and (ignoring weekends) it really is evenings after dinner. So aim to go straight for a walk after dinner and have a cup of tea when I come back in.
I've been absolutely starving when I've come in this week, but I realised I have some water with breakfast than usually one glass at lunch around 12.30 ish and then drink nothing until I get in at 19.15. I think I'm really thirsty. I'm not sure how to change this though? Stash a bottle in the cupboard and drink between appointments?

grumpysquash · 04/10/2015 18:25

Can you have a glass of water on the table during appointments? What sort of work do you do?

Is there any time between appointments where you could have a drink?

rivierliedje · 04/10/2015 20:10

I'm a GP. I can't really have a glass there for hygiene reasons, also very impractical (i would definitely knock it over). I could bring a bottle a take a sip between patiënts, might do that actually.

grumpysquash · 04/10/2015 22:42

riv
Excellent that a GP endorses this diet :)
I think having a bottle of water on your desk would be perfectly OK! Definitely hygienic as it has a lid.
And also, if you are encouraging patients to drink more.......you can use yourself as an example.

If you literally just had a sip/swig between each patient as a matter of routine, it would add up to plenty over the course of a day. Assuming you're in the UK and appointments are only 5 mins :)

Kitsandkids · 04/10/2015 23:32

Would it be ok if I joined in please? I'm the biggest I've ever been and it's really affecting my energy levels and self confidence. I'm determined to do something about it!

standclear · 05/10/2015 07:47

Morning all!

Lovely to have you with us Kitsandkids (I'm the heaviest I have ever been too so I totally 'get' the issues around confidence and fatigue).

GrumpySquash If I'd seen you were kindly offering I'd have asked for some chocolate healthy grapes Wink

Congratulations on your weight loss last week! That is really terrific going! And thanks for the encouragement!

Congrats to you too eltsihT you've done really, really well! Best of luck for mole removal today - hope not too stressful!!

Rivier yes it's great to have the endorsement of a health professional! Smile (Could you not keep a small bottle of water where you keep your handbag? ) I also have weak moments after dinner as I had become used to having a small sweet (biscuit?) something with my post-supper coffee. To combat this I am trying to dramatically cut down on coffee in the first place, do some sewing (so my hands are occupied) but if I am desperate, confining myself to eating one date. Going out for a walk instead is probably a good idea! The dog never objects to an extra walk anyway ... .

Great to hear about everyone's successes! It makes me more determined to do better!

Hope everyone has a good week!

rivierliedje · 05/10/2015 10:57

No Grumpy I'm not in the UK. My appointments are about 20 minutes. (15-20 minutes is standard here), but am still a trainee, so get leeway during the day to listen to a patient for an hour catch up/ look things up/ do research etc

I've got my bottle handily hid in a desk drawer. I can see that the downside of all this drinking is that I'm going to need the loo more often Grin

Welcome Kits

I love knitting in the evenings while watching tv, hands are busy and you've accomplished something. I imagine it's much the same with sewing Stand
I should start up again.

grumpysquash · 05/10/2015 12:41

Kitsandkids

Yes, please do! I only started last Monday.....

Would you like to share your goal/target?

helentheheron · 05/10/2015 18:30

Welcome kits. You are definitely not alone with the lack energy and low self confidence.. Hopefully things will start to look up soon though.

Stand - 0.2kg really isn't very much, and weight loss is never "smooth" so don't get too disheartened.

Well done rivier, grumpy & eltsihT

I've been feeling pretty crappy today.. Went to m&s to get a new sports bra and standing semi naked in front of several well lit mirrors really did not make me feel good. Ugh. To top it off, they didn't even have any styles that fitted (they all had straps which cut into my underarm flab Sad). Pah. Anyhow, trying to avoid the temptation to drown my sorrows in food.

Hope other people have had a better start to the week?

standclear · 05/10/2015 21:37

Helen those changing room mirrors are to be avoided at all costs I think - even if one is as skinny as a rake!! Sorry you found the whole experience demoralising but I think we can't possibly look at ourselves objectively. I remember looking at some photos of myself at one of dd's birthday parties and at the time thinking how awful and fat and gross I looked! Now I look at those photos quite a few years later and think I was actually pretty slim! So don't let it get you down!

Thanks for encouragement - despite being full of determination - events overtook me today and I have again eaten far too much of the right things and too much of the wrong things Blush I really have so little self control where food and other people are concerned, it is pitiful!!

Trying to end on a positive - I was on my feet for at least 80 % of day inc 3 dog walks.

Yes can really recommend evening craft distractions Rivier - I find mindless snacking in front of the telly ositively dangerous in terms of weight gain!! Glad you have the hydration sorted!

Waves to Grumpy ¨Kits and everyone else!

Good luck for rest of week!

Can some kind person pls give me a large kick up the rear tomorrow - it is much needed atm Blush
