Starting the no 'S' eating regime today to lose weight, anyone want to join in?

Hi, have got decidedly porky over the past few years.
I feel tired and lethargic, and none of my clothes look good anymore.
I also need to lose weight for health reasons and increase my (currently woeful) level of exercise.

I want to follow a simple and 'do-able' eating plan that is fairly simple and that I will be able to sustain ie hoping to lose 0.5 kg each week.

I'm planning to follow the no 'S' "diet":

book here

A summary of the basic rules is:

no snacks
no sweets (it's an American book so that covers puddings as well as biscuits and confectionary)
no seconds

except on days that start with 's' ie the weekend, and 'special' days ie birthdays and big holidays such as Christmas.

I've got the book so can answer further questions but that is basically it!

I'm going to be using MFP to log calories and I have also found the free NHS weight loss plan (includes exercise) helpful too

see here

I am planning to post my weight here Blush every Sunday too (but that is not obligatory of course).

The other reason for posting on here is that I don't want to bore my family and friends to death about it in rl!! But it would be nice to have some companions along the way Smile.

Anyone want to join in?

Hi everyone,

Monty I remember that line now you mention it :) I love Withnail and I but haven't watched it for years.

Nice to see that everyone is popping in here in the run up to Christmas.

I have had a shockingly bad cold since Thursday evening (I never get sick - haven't had a cold for about 5 years) which meant that I missed my work Christmas do (Friday) and haven't managed to do any of the pre-Christmas jobs :( I've mostly been sitting on the sofa, shivering or sweating and MNing.

But weighing in at 69.5kg, having not eaten a big 3 course dinner..... 5.5kg less than when I joined at the end of September.

How is everyone else?

juliej75 · 24/12/2015 14:03

Hi all, just popping in briefly to say Happy Christmas!

I was pleased to be at exactly my original target weight this morning, although some may remember that I'd revised that down a few pounds some weeks ago as I was still clearly going to be rather wobblier still than I'd like at this weight. Nonetheless, not a bad place to be on Christmas Eve Xmas Smile

I'm just going to enjoy what I eat over the next week so may be coming by in the New Year slightly shamefaced. But it will be worth it!

Have a fab and magical time, hope all the children love their presents and traditions, and hope you are reappear soon happy, relaxed and looking forward to 2016.

xx

SearedChestnut · 25/12/2015 09:31

Happy Christmas to all "no S-ers"!!!

Congratulations to those of you who have reached your Christmas targets - well done!

[And to those of us who haven't yet, onwards and downwards everyone!!

Xmas Smile
helentheheron · 25/12/2015 21:38

Merry Christmas! I hope you are all having a wonderful time with your loved ones and that the new year brings health, peace and happiness Xmas Smile

Tbh no s has gone out the window for me in the past few weeks but come the new year I will be back!

MontyYouTerribleCunt · 28/12/2015 21:58

grumpy Grin. I don't know why I love Withnail and I so much! Probably reminds me of my youth!

Right, I have been at the Xmas cake / booze / general rubbish for days. Planning to get back to No S in the next few days. Also doing dryathlon this year so no booze at all for January which I am sure will help a little bit with weight loss.

Hope you have all had lovely xmasses!

MontyYouTerribleCunt · 28/12/2015 22:22

I don't know why I love Withnail and I so much! Probably reminds me of my youth!

Sorry - not that I took a shit load of drugs and was a struggling actor in my youth haha! Just that I watched the film a lot in my youth!

juliej75 · 31/12/2015 10:12

Ah, you disappointed me there Monty Wink

Another brief pop in for me as I'm still off work and therefore only on the computer once a week (am not one for technology except where necessary - erm, like Mumsnet..?!)

Hope everyone has enjoyed their Christmasses and looking forward to the New Year? Ours has been pretty good - seen various bits of extended family each day, had lots of lovely pampering presents, kids happy etc etc. I've not even eaten to excess as we've tended to eat late lunches then I've had to leave to get my brood into bed before late suppers have been served.

Now I need to think about new year's resolutions... And getting fit needs to be somewhere in there!

Have a fantastic evening tonight, everyone, and I look forward to everyone reappearing again shortly Smile

EllenTheEgret · 01/01/2016 11:37

Happy New Year all!

(This is Helen with a new year name change btw)

How is everyone feeling after Christmas? I hop you've all had some lovely time off and its great to see some new faces who have somehow managed to start a diet while most of us were crumbling in the face of Christmas!

As of today I am Back On It. Trying to resist the urge to make 101 new years resolutions so i think the main (weight loss related) ones will have to be:

No S
Lots of water
In bed by 10.30pm
No booze at home in January

I'll also be supporting dp (who has an autoimmune disorder) in experimenting with an anti - inflammatory diet, starting with no wheat or sugar (well, once the Christmas cake is finished!)

It feels a little silly making new years resolutions which aren't actually "new" but when I stuck to the above back in the autumn I actually felt really good. By summer 2016 I want to have established a healthy pattern of eating and have a healthy, non - bloated, light - feeling body.

Onwards and downwards!

EllenTheEgret · 01/01/2016 11:41

Forgot to ask

Julie - how have you been getting on with the shred? I'm starting to quite enjoy it although when I tried level 3 it nearly killed me (and all the jumping almost brought the house down!)

Slimmingcrackers · 01/01/2016 12:44

Hello and Happy New Year!

[Enthusiastic waves to everyone!]

(It's me - SC - with NY nc.)

Hope everyone has had a lovely holiday!

I am still thinking about how to approach NY and dieting and how etc etc but eating less and moving more will definitely feature!!

[I had hoped to be a bit more organised about it for today but holidays have been a whirlwind of hosting and travelling and there are still loads of tempting goodies in house - we haven't started on the Christmas cake yet for example!]

Very impressed by those of you who are already 'on it' and good luck to everyone who are formulating their NY plans and objectives!

Dh is ill with flu atm so loads to do before start of school/work on Mon. Be back early next week to catch up properly!

eltsihT · 01/01/2016 17:47

Hey everyone! What fab name changes, I am going to weigh in on Sunday and start no s'ing again on the 4th.

My dh has decided to join me in no s'ing but don't think he will join the thread.

We had a lovely Christmas and the food was lovely, but I don't want to see a joint of meat again for a while.

EllenTheEgret · 02/01/2016 09:15

Nice to "see" you again SC and eltsihT

(SC - great name, although for a second I thought you were a weight loss spammer posting to advertise juice plus or some such Grin)

I had a decent start to no s ing
B - nuts, dried fruit & yogurt
L - leftovers from nye (surprisingly healthy - my vegan mum came for dinner and we made a feast of veggie Ottelenghi recipes) + a tin of tuna
D - moussaka + steamed veg, apple juice.

Will try to be good today although the Christmas cake really does need eating Grin

Great that your dh is joining us EltsihT, and hope your dh feels better soon SC.

eltsihT · 03/01/2016 09:38

Ok weighing in today:
64kg exactly

My goal is to reach and maintain 60kg I am looking forward to starting no s'ing again tomorrow.

grumpysquash2 · 03/01/2016 12:12

Also weighing in today and it isn't good......

I am 11 stone 2, up from 10 stone 11 on Christmas Eve. So that's a 5lb gain in 10 days (how is that even possible?)

I am getting back on the case tomorrow - back to work on Tuesday which should make it easier. I'm hoping it's not 5lb of actual fat.

My goal is to be 'reliably' under 10 stone 7 by the Easter holidays.

Did you all have a good Christmas break? We had various visitors; also managed to decorate DS2's bedroom and we got into the West End to see The Illusionists which was amazing. Also had quite a lot of down time, which was nice. Currently have PIL staying, but only for one night, so manageable without any hair-tearing on this occasion :)

Slimmingcrackers · 03/01/2016 12:41

Heellllloooo! Hope everyone has had lovely holidays (well as good as poss anyway).

Big enthusiastic waves to Grumpy eltsihT Ellen Monty Julie Rivier Boozena Jolly (and Uphill if you are about) and anyone I have missed!

Wishing you all good health, happiness, and success with your no-S-ing goals for 2016!!

Grumpy crikey, congrats on getting so much done in the holidays (you sound v energetic!!) and good you managed a bit of r & r too!! Good luck with your goals (and if it's any consolation, my weight gain over Christmas has been a lot more than yours, I'm sure you will lose yours in no time!)

Ellen can see you are (typically) setting a good example already and are straight back on to the healthy stuff -good for you! (Despite my new nn, I ate two M&S mini pork pies yesterday Blush) Hope anti-inflammatory regime goes well btw.

eltsihT fab that your dh is joining in - I wish mine would!! I suppose I could ask ... . Congrats on coping so well with your many and various Christmas dinners!!

Julie great that you have managing to keep Christmas consumption under control and enjoy your pampering presents!!

Congats on your self-discipline too Rivier! (And glad you had a good holiday prior to working over Christmas!)

Monty good luck with your dry January!

I have to confess to not being quite back in the groove yet. There is still far too much English cheese and cold Christmas pudding in the fridge [whimpers] . And I promised dd that we would make a gingerbread house ...um... which I am doing now Confused

I will be making a healthy soup today though with all the leftover root veg! Oh and does it count that I have bought a spiraliser ...? [SC temporarily exits thread in search of courgettes ... .]

[Waves to all and hope I haven't left anyone out!! Huge apologies if so!]

Slimmingcrackers · 03/01/2016 12:42

Grumpy btw, forgot to ask if your furries enjoyed their sprouts this year? Grin

grumpysquash2 · 03/01/2016 13:05

SC, our furries are fusspots - if you give them sprouts they look at you with a WTF? expression :)
Santa brought them a hay and dried carrot house which they were very pleased with.

We have quite a lot of amazing farm shop cheese left too and people keep bringing us large Bries (currently have one and three-quarters....)

Despite how it may sound, I have not been energetic at all (think getting up after 10, sitting around in PJs MNing until lunch, a bit of painting or short walk or supermarket trip in afternoon, dinner and drinking Wine all evening. Repeat next day. And next.).

Slimmingcrackers · 03/01/2016 13:33

Hay and dried carrot is a favourite combinations here too for the rabs Grumpy Plus a bit of dill!

Think you are being hard on yourself about your "down time". Everyone needs a bit of r and r !! And I have been doing pretty much the same since dh succumbed to flu.

Sympathies on the brie front btw! (Although it sounds delicious!) Every social interaction here seemingly involves an exchange of calorific goodies!!

grumpysquash2 · 03/01/2016 16:00

Thanks SC. I think I am just bad at relaxing without feeling guilty about wasting time......

I have got past exchanging calorific goodies and have reached the point of just randomly eating them (finished off my last two Lindt chocs while writing this.....)

What has everyone been up to?

rivierliedje · 03/01/2016 21:00

Hope everyone had a good christmas. And yes to new year, new start and all that. I'm about to go to bed in a bid to be well rested enough to go for a run tomorrow morning before work. I went this morning and I walked about 10k as well today, so that was good. I still have lots of christmas treats left (I was given lots of chocolate), but it'll just have to stay in the cupboard until next weekend.

juliej75 · 04/01/2016 13:46

Hey, it is lovely to see so many people back again after the Christmas break! I've missed you all Smile

Good to hear everyone has had a good holiday and enjoyed themselves and I am loving the inspiration from those who are walking, running, shredding and leaving chocolates in cupboards. I'm more in the eating whole camemberts camp still

Ellen, you asked how the shred is going for me... erm, it isn't! I think I only did it three times and gave up again. Can't remember why but I'm sure it seemed a good reason at the time Wink My NY resolution is to do more exercise but I'm not sure what at the moment as I now have a bad back, thanks to an overtired toddler who has been insisting on being carried everywhere. But he is the cuddliest poppet in the world, so he's forgiven.

I weighed in at 10'2.5lbs this morning, so a 2.5lbs on over Christmas, but not as bad as I'd feared, and all seemed to go on in the last three days so maybe it will disappear just as quickly... maybe...

So now I just need to decide if I start no-S'ing again from today, or wait until all the Christmas goodies are gone???

eltsihT · 04/01/2016 18:04

Day 1 has been good so far,

B. Toast
L. Minestrone soup
D. Chicken and asparagus risotto

No snacks so far but I did finish off a spoonful of risotto left in the pan as I felt dh had served me a short portion. Planning on watching some telly and resisting the end of a box of quality street before going to bed.

Hope everyone else is having a good day

eltsihT · 06/01/2016 07:22

I did end up having a bag of crisps on Monday night. But yesterday didn't snack at all. However I suspect that was down to eating a whole dominos pizza.

I am hoping I can behave today but am making banana muffins with the dc to take round to a friends house so I am not too hopeful.

Your your no s'ing is going well

Ellentheegret · 06/01/2016 16:35

Good luck with the muffins eltsihT!

Ah, your toddler sounds adorable Julie Smile. Think you're right not to shred with a bad back, that would be a recipe for disaster. Fwiw, it hasn't actually helped me lose weight (last time I weighted I was back to my original starting weight Blush which is pretty embarrassing) but it has built some muscle and improved my posture a bit I think.

Waves to rivier, grumpy & SC, great to see you all back Smile

I have a minor success to report - I'm back on night shifts and my usual routine (as terrible as this sounds) is to get home at 7am and have a large glass of whisky to knock me out help me sleep. This morning - no whisky! Woo hoo! Still feel like crap but v proud of myself. That's 6 days off alcohol so far.

So far today
B - big bowl of wheat free muesli & yogurt + seconds
Plan is to have omelette with sweet potato & kale bubble & squeak for dinner, then maybe a kebab later (will try to stick to meat or falafel with salad!)

Ellentheegret · 06/01/2016 23:39

SC I have just got a spirazer too! Only tried courgetti bolognaise (sp??) and courgette fritters so far, both of which were surprisingly nice. I'd be interested to hear about any recipes you try.

We also bought an "instant pot" pressure cooker thing off the back of that thread in chat.. Not tried it out yet though. Fingers crossed that it's useful as it was pretty expensive!
