Starting the no 'S' eating regime today to lose weight, anyone want to join in?

Hi, have got decidedly porky over the past few years.
I feel tired and lethargic, and none of my clothes look good anymore.
I also need to lose weight for health reasons and increase my (currently woeful) level of exercise.

I want to follow a simple and 'do-able' eating plan that is fairly simple and that I will be able to sustain ie hoping to lose 0.5 kg each week.

I'm planning to follow the no 'S' "diet":

book here

A summary of the basic rules is:

no snacks
no sweets (it's an American book so that covers puddings as well as biscuits and confectionary)
no seconds

except on days that start with 's' ie the weekend, and 'special' days ie birthdays and big holidays such as Christmas.

I've got the book so can answer further questions but that is basically it!

I'm going to be using MFP to log calories and I have also found the free NHS weight loss plan (includes exercise) helpful too

see here

I am planning to post my weight here Blush every Sunday too (but that is not obligatory of course).

The other reason for posting on here is that I don't want to bore my family and friends to death about it in rl!! But it would be nice to have some companions along the way Smile.

Anyone want to join in?

I'm on call tonight and stupidly went to the supermarket in stead of eating the soup I had in the fridge for dinner. Had some taboulleh instead (and chocolate covered marzipan).

We now have jars of sweets at work for all the brave children. It's not a great thing to have around when you're trying not to obsess over food.

eltsihT · 06/11/2015 21:11

Been feeling really low today, but managed just to have 1 chocolate out of my Swiss chocolate box so feeling quite proud of myself.
B- too much coffee then peanut butter on toast
L- chicken and stuffing sandwich
D- sausage casserole and crunchy bread.

My brother and sister in law are visiting this weekend. Dh has just spent 2 hours prepping food for them so I suspect it will be hard not to over indulge.

helentheheron · 07/11/2015 07:51

Hope you feel better today eltsiht, and we'll done with your restraint yesterday. Rivier - I hope last night was OK.

I was stupid yesterday also. Ate sensibly all day, then went out for a "few" drinks after work (planned, so don't feel to bad about that) but when I got home I just went to the kitchen and ate anything I could get my hands on Blush no other reason than tipsyness really. Doh - I feel like such an idiot!

Mantra for today - forgive yourself and move on.

B - protein bar
L - mini salad with grains & beans, dried fruit & nuts
D - cheese toastie, apple, coconut water
Evening binge on 1 slice bread & hummus, loads of veg & ketchup and whatever other random bits I could find in the fridge (luckily in my drunken haze I forgot about the chocolate in the cupboard Smile)

grumpysquash · 07/11/2015 12:59

Hi everyone,
eltsihT sorry to hear you're feeling low, but very well done on the self restraint. Hope you have a nice weekend with your Dbro
helen I can see you're cross with yourself, but it doesn't sound too bad if you were having lots of veg and bread and hummus. It could have been far worse
julie if you're going to have a big chocolate pudding, it might as well be a delicious one that you really enjoy :) Envy
rivier hope your on-call wasn't too overly busy/stressful

Waves to everyone else

I managed to navigate through the two-meals-out-in-one-day yesterday with a good outcome :) Pub lunch was a warm chicken Caesar salad. We ended up in Pret in the evening as we only had an hour between parking and show and I got a salad with avocado, tomatoes, quinoa with coriander and mint, roasted sweetcorn and various green stuff with a lovely dressing. I don't know what it was called but it was very tasty and also diet friendly.

I did have Wine when we got in though, so not completely virtuous.

rivierliedje · 07/11/2015 16:29

I managed a small loss this week! And I had the easiest night call I've ever done. I got to sleep through the whole thing :D
I have a proper 24 hour on call next week, which I'm rather nervous about.
I've been on a good walk this morning.
B: pumpkin pie porridge
L: brocolli soup, a bit of leftover taboulleh and a piece of bread
snacks: some cereal with sugar Blush

eltsihT · 08/11/2015 08:22

66.6kg last week, which Really spurred me on to stick to the regime. And 65.1kg today! I am delighted.

Unfortunately I just bought a massive tub of quality street and one of roses for Christmas as last year we couldn't find roses in December. But I made dh put them in the loft with the Christmas decs so I won't touch them.

salixcaprea · 08/11/2015 13:25

Hi all. Just back from short but lovely break away (among green fields). Hope everyone OK.

Weighing in at 83.2 kg again (so no progress at all this week again, actually surprised that I haven't put on weight given the amount of food consumed during half term but nowt particularly to be proud of if I'm honest).

Really need a good kick up the rear if someone would care to administer it!? Grin

BBL to catch up properly with thread! Just got to get school uniform wash on, fill the fridge and do a quick tidy up first!!

salixcaprea · 08/11/2015 13:29

Wow EltsihT Just spotted your fabulous weight loss! Congrats!!! [Particularly good going when you were feeling low too] Thanks

Well done to you too Rivier - and glad night shift wasn't as bad as feared!

Sorry, really must go and get some choring done this time, but big waves to Grumpy Helen Julie and everyone else! Back later!

helentheheron · 09/11/2015 05:20

Well done Eltsiht and rivier!

SC - good that you didn't gain over the holiday, and have a boot from me Smile. Think I might need one myself after a very snack-y weekend.

This week will (hopefully) be my 3rd of no wine at home. Apparently it takes 3 weeks to make or break a habit, so very keen that this one goes well! It will be a stressful one with work so it's going to be tough, need to try my best though.

Good luck for the week everyone!

grumpysquash · 09/11/2015 09:37

Hi everyone,
I lost 3 pounds last week, but have to point out that I had a sore stomach for 2 days and didn't eat much for 48h, so it's not 'real' weight loss, i.e. achieved through actively dieting IYSWIM.
Nevertheless, it isn't a problem :) Total weight loss since starting diet is ~4kg and BMI now under 25 (just). The weird thing is, though, that my clothes don't seem to fit significantly better, so I'm not sure where I'm losing it from.....

salixcaprea · 09/11/2015 09:58

Grumpy that is really good going! A 4kg loss is really significant and great news about your BMI too! Congratulations!

And thank you for the boot Helen! Good luck with avoiding the Wine this week!

I am afraid I must confess and say that I have had a very rude awakening this morning. Shouldn't have stepped on scales but did ... you know I was surprised that I hadn't put on weight over half term? Well it has decided to make an appearance today; am back up to 83.8 kg! Half a kilo up from yesterday fhs!! [bush] Feel really bloated and unhealthy too. So silly and only myself to blame!

Starting again. Really need to beat this and stop faddling about!

Hope everyone has a good start to the week!

juliej75 · 09/11/2015 10:37

Well done grumpy and eltsihT - that's really impressive in just a week!

I've edged down slightly and am now at 63.1kg. I've not eaten big quantities this past week but I have made horrendously unhealthy choices, so it's not really sustainable. Back to nutritious eating this week, I hope.

Boots up the bum for anyone struggling with motivation at the moment (including myself - is that anatomically possible?!), and onwards and downwards with the scales...

grumpysquash · 09/11/2015 12:06

SC weighing frequently is a mixed blessing!

What are you having for lunch? I've got salad and chicken, but am trying to wait a bit longer (only 5 past midday here).....might head into the lab as a distraction.....

salixcaprea · 09/11/2015 12:45

Well done Julie for going in right direction! And thank you for boot!

Grumpy good question! Home made chicken soup (with vermicelli) and 2 slices Ryvita! Chicken and salad = v good!

And could you possibly rustle me up a weight loss spell potion while you are in the lab pls? Wink

To steal Julie's phrase ... onwards and downwards everyone!! Grin

grumpysquash · 09/11/2015 12:50

It's cold in there today! I've shivered off a few calories :)

eltsihT · 09/11/2015 21:40

I am very much a frequent weigher and last week I was very bloated when weighing in which I think is why I had such good loss this week. My phone graphs my weight, which is part of the problem.

I am finding after 4 weeks being pretty strict with myself I am now finding it easier to say no.

Still feeling a bit low but it's nearly that time of the month.

Today's menu
B pop tart and coffee
L ham sandwich and Mullar corner, orange
D Cajun chicken pasta.
Snacks: 2 tictacs in the car.

Good luck saying no everyone!

helentheheron · 10/11/2015 06:31

Good stuff grumpy and Julie.

Sc you really have my sympathy. Please don't get too down about it though.. It sounds like you know what the issues are and now half term is over (?) you can really start kicking some no-s ass. Good luck - you can do it.

Yesterday's menu
B - protein bar
L - salad with beans & 2 boiled eggs, cuppa soup
D - lentil soup, salad, bread roll. Banana & yoghurt.
No wine Grin
Bed at 11ish which combined with only about 5 hours sleep the night before has left me knackered - I just know I'll crave sugar & carbs today. Need to be aware of it and keep my fingers well away from any biscuit tins!

helentheheron · 10/11/2015 06:40

Meant to say - eltsiht, you're doing really well sticking to it while feeling low. I hope it's just hormonal and you feel better soon. Do you take evening primrose or anything?

It does get easier, doesn't it? Although I still find Monday evenings really hard. In fact most evenings are pretty tough.. I have been drinking a LOT of slimline tonic and mugs and mugs of decaf coffee to distract myself!

salixcaprea · 10/11/2015 08:08

Hello all!

Thank you for the encouragement Helen - much appreciated! Continually impressed by your healthy menus! Agree that Mondays are tough generally, in all aspects, in addition to dieting. Hope you can catch up on sleep tonight.

Sorry you are still feeling low eltsihT Thanks And your conscientious logging of the consumption of two tic tacs is v impressive btw!! Smile

Yesterday:
B croissant with a slice of gouda (ridiculous I know, I know Blush)
L home made chicken soup with tiny bit vermicelli and 2 pieces Ryvita, + two satsumas
S fish goujons with spinach and mash potato (but ate tiny amount of seconds when clearing up)

1 boiled sweet, 1 toffee Blush
No Wine

Really need to do better - letting rl stuff get in the way - and dh still bringing in mounds of unhealthy pastries in to house!

Meant to say from down thread Uphill glad the arts are represented here too!

Waves to Grumpy Rivier Julie and anyone else I may have missed!

rivierliedje · 10/11/2015 09:57

Two days off again now, as it's my tuesday and then the 11th tomorrow. I'm off to the shops in a minute, only to get fruit and veg, of course.

Well done to everyone who's had a loss.
SOup for lunch today and then I really need to clean the flat and freeze the things in my fridge before they go off. Did anyone else see that War on waste show on the bbc? It made me feel awful.

juliej75 · 10/11/2015 11:59

Why is it that, when you make a resolution on something, you immediately want desperately to do the opposite??!

My "nutritious" menus from yesterday involved:
B - chocolate brownie Blush
L - steamed fish and kale Grin
D - maltesers, toast and lots of cheese Blush

Clearly kicking oneself up the bum REALLY doesn't work!

PS didn't see the War on Waste programme but I'm pretty sure I would have felt smug. We waste no food in our house. No, I will eat anything rather than see it lining a bin...

grumpysquash · 10/11/2015 13:03

Julie - the silver lining of that cloud is that at least you didn't have the sweets in addition to meals Grin

grumpysquash · 10/11/2015 13:08

We don't waste too much in our house (just bread really...), but we do have a pair of guinea pigs to help with any surplus salad.

helentheheron · 11/11/2015 06:16

Morning all.

Yesterday's menu:
B - protein bar
L - mini tuna mayo baguette, nuts, clementine
D - fish pie, spinach, tomatoes. Apple & yoghurt with large sprinkle of muesli
1 small bottle + 1 half pint beer (not great, but was at the pub (quiz night) so hopefully won't break my no booze at home habit)

Got dragged on a 6 mile run by a (pretty fit, male) colleague. I usually just pootle along round the park at just over walking speed but this was proper running and ye gods it nearly killed me! Felt good afterwards though.

Hope everyone is well this morning.

eltsihT · 11/11/2015 17:06

Good job on the run Helen.

I didn't snack yesterday but we did go to the chippy for dinner as the beef stew I had lifted out of the freezer looked awful.

Quite proud of my self today, made steak pie for dinner ( did a small one for the kids, will put mine and dh's in the oven later) and I managed not to eat the portion my youngest didn't touch.
