The No S Diet (it's not exactly a diet)

holmessweetholmes · 24/06/2015 15:43

I just found this and I think it's awesome. The most sensible thing I've read in aaages about how not to be overweight.

The No S Diet rules:

No Snacking
No Sweets (puddings, sugary stuff)
No Seconds

... except when the day starts with an S (Saturday, Sunday, Special days).

That's it.

I am sooo fed up with thinking about carbs / no carbs / fat / low fat / fasting / superfoods / G.I. blah blah blah. I think I might actually be able to stick to this.

Hi MyDog - yes, it feels so sane after other diets, doesn't it!

Thanks for the birthday wishes :) DD still isn't 100%, to put it mildly, but is now asleep and there is pad that, Charlie and birthday cake so all is good.

TheOriginalWinkly · 25/07/2015 19:38

Fuck!!! Chablis not Charlie!!! It's not that kind of birthday Shock bloody autocorrect

MyDogAteMyBelt · 25/07/2015 19:41

Thanks mum and holmes.

Yes, sane, sensible, doable for the rest of my life. I can follow it when I'm eating out, when I'm on a business trip, on holiday, anywhere. It can take a while to get into it fully, but it's worth it!
Thanks for starting the thread holmes.

beela · 25/07/2015 20:39

Hhahahahahahaa, lol @ charlie and birthday cake! Have a good evening Cake

holmessweetholmes · 25/07/2015 21:05

You're very welcome MyDog! Although I reckon I'm about the least successful No S-er on here atm!

Great post MyDogAteMyBelt, you've given me hope that I can overcome my disordered eating habits too. And you're right: a sustainable/maintainable weight & way of eating is far more important than dropping the pounds fast. If I can keep it up for the rest of my life then slow is fine by me.

MyDogAteMyBelt · 26/07/2015 07:58

helen, it took me a while to settle in to No S.
What kept tripping me up was the desire to lose weight that bit faster. Every time I went back to a more restrictive diet, I'd end up with my eating becoming more disordered.
I'm not saying that I did No S perfectly at first - far from it. But I realised that my eating was far less disordered when I was following it and that motivated me to stick with it. Now I'm so happy that I did.

Good luck with it, I hope it works well for you.

stilllearnin · 27/07/2015 08:20

Good morning - I am back from a wet and muddy and mad secret garden party. We had a fantastic time as usual but the S thing was not really possible. I did go hungry a few times but it is so hectic that on other days I had to snack because I could not tell when I'd next get a meal. God it was fun. The next festival is shorter and smaller so I am going to attempt it there.

I'm late I know but I really laughed at Charlie and birthday cake Grin

helentheheron · 27/07/2015 08:28

How was everyone's weekend?

I didn't go completely mad on the S's: cake on Saturday, a chocolate biscuit in Sunday. Lots of artificially sweetened pop though, which I had been missing. Back to the water today!

Weighed myself this morning and I'm 10st 1.8lb & 28% fat. Not exactly a huge loss (less that half a pound), but its in the right direction I guess.

I really need to up my exercise but its difficult to find the time right now - we moved into our new house on Friday so life is in complete chaos! Also need to devise a new running route which (I'm slightly embarrassed to say) is actually quite an exciting thought Smile

holmessweetholmes · 27/07/2015 11:38

I'm properly back on the No S waggon now. Weekend was not too excessive apart from a Chinese takeaway on Saturday night, which I actually regretted as I felt a bit crappy on Sunday - all that salt, sugar and MSG, no doubt.

Still not really able to run because of my foot injury - the occasional light jog for now. I've been doing some yoga though - found a great set of yoga sessions on YouTube and have found a class starying in September. Yay!

Nice one Holmes! I love yoga Smile As you can't run atm, how about swimming?

I went to TGI Friday on Sunday lunchtime, had chicken fajita and diet coke, and felt VERY full. But still had dessert because I knew it was my only chance for a week! Not sure that was a good idea.. The dessert was huge, and yummy to begin with, but I couldn't eat it all.. Very unlike me not to finish! Felt uncomfortably full and a bit sick afterwards. But didn't eat a thing for the rest of the day because I was still full! So maybe not a complete disaster. And I've hopefully learned to eat a bit less next time. One of the hardest things is accepting that it's ok to leave an unfinished plate! (Especially in a restaurant like TGI Friday where the portions are huge.)

holmessweetholmes · 27/07/2015 15:28

I'm afraid I hate swimming with a passion! Or rather I hate swimming pools and I'm rubbish at swimming. I love mucking about in the sea or lakes, but that's not really a regular occurrence and can barely count as exercise! I do plenty of walking though.

Being able to stop when you're full is good. That's what those intuitive eating diets rely on. They don't really work well for me though - I need some proper rules to keep me on track! I eat ridiculously fast too, which is unhelpful for recognising that you've eaten enough. Am trying to slow down, but old habits die hard!

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 27/07/2015 16:16

I eat really fast too! It doesn't help that not snacking means I'm really hungry by the time I get to a meal.

helentheheron · 27/07/2015 21:15

Today's menu:
B - muesli with nuts and apple
L - jacket potato with spicy tuna and salad
D - HUGE grilled fish with bread and salad

antimatter · 28/07/2015 06:17

Back at work after long weekend at a festival. Surprisingly no snacking there! I have had a chance of 4 days on this new "old" way of eating.

This is how we used to be fed when were were kids!

NameChange30 · 28/07/2015 08:36

Weighed myself this morning - no change since last week! I did think that first week might well be a one-off! Still, we've all said slow is good...

beela · 28/07/2015 09:11

I'm still too scared to weigh myself. Tell me to get a grip?

NameChange30 · 28/07/2015 10:40

LOL! I won't say get a grip (it is scary) but we are here to virtually hold your hand, and congratulate you if you're pleased or commiserate if you're not.

helentheheron · 28/07/2015 11:01

I'm available for hand holding too beela!

The most important thing is how you feel (and if your clothes fit!) not the number on the scales, although I'd be lying if I said weigh ins don't stress me out too.

beela · 28/07/2015 12:46

Ok. Next time I am passing a set of scales I will hop on Grin

antimatter · 28/07/2015 16:19

no weight loss for me too but I want to first establish good routine of 2-3 proper meals a day and then start looking at content of my plate

helentheheron · 29/07/2015 07:24

That's my plan too, antimatter. I think you've got to take a long term approach for no s ing to work.

Yesterday's menu:
Lovely run first thing in the morning
B - muesli with yogurt & apple
L - tuna sandwich, homous, baked beans
D - quorn cottage pie, mini fritata, apple.

Had dinner at 7 but was working a late shift so didn't get home till 11 and by then I was starving! Managed not to snack but it was pretty miserable and I was quite grumpy with dp Blush.

Smoked mackerel for breakfast this morning. Following Holmes' (I think) advice upthread and hoping that a high protein breakfast will make me less hungry throughout the day.

msrisotto · 29/07/2015 07:32

Hello, i've been doing this by another name (no added sugar) for 2 months and went down to including the weekends as well, two weeks ago. It gets easier as you go! I've lost 9 lbs and am back to my set point more or less. It has done good things for my skin :)

NameChange30 · 29/07/2015 10:12

Hi msrisotto, do you mean that you're not eating sugar at weekends either? In that case it sounds more like the no sugar diet than the no S diet... Having treats at the weekend is the whole point of the no S diet as it makes it easier to stick to long-term. Glad your diet seems to be working for you though.
