I have taken pasta/rice salads every day, no cheese

and was I wrong about bread?

For curry, how about you put some chickpeas or something in the curry so it's got the carbs, (but not refined carbs), ditch the rice/naan, & have it with salad.

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 13/06/2015 09:48

Noah low/no carbs isn't for me either but I try to moderate the levels of everything I'm consuming so protein makes my most of my meal.

Yeah the fruit & fibre won't be doing much. Swap to branflakes (still not great) and there were some great suggestions on my recent "evaluate my breakfasts" thread.

NoahVale · 13/06/2015 09:48

keep em coming, Grin

Pinterest is really great for recipe ideas, BTW.

Ryvita is good for breakfast. Porridge too. Someone once told me to remember that cereal is what they feed cattle to fatten them up...I (being an idiot) took that to literally mean feeding Coco Pops to cows. Grin

I've never ate any kind cereal for breakfast since though.

I think having white toast at the weekend is fine. I like the 80/20 theory that as long as you're good 80% of the time you can have a few treats at weekends. Do you have a lot of weight you want to lose?

NoahVale · 13/06/2015 10:02

i do have a lot of weight to lose yes, well that is subjective isnt it, i guess 3 stone would be great.

Something like slimming world might work for you. Not necessarily the class itself (as that can be a whole world of madness) but the diet. You get told what you can eat shit loads of and what you can restrict. It doesn't feel as restrictive as calorie counting.

I totally agree with the eating less carbs thing because it definitely works but I don't think its the only way to lose weight. If you would find it hard you are much more likely to fall off the wagon. It would be much better for you to find a way of still having the few things you like some of the time and trying to be good the rest of the time if that makes sense.

That way it won't feel too restrictive. The biggest enemy of weight loss is getting trapped in the cycle of feeling that certain foods are bad and therefore you are bad for eating them.

NoahVale · 13/06/2015 10:28

yes classes would be difficult due to lack of transport
thanks

NoahVale · 13/06/2015 10:31

oh, it is expensive Sad

OP posts:
Quiero · 13/06/2015 10:35

Yeah, it can be expensive. If you really wanted to do it and your BMI is high enough I think the GP can refer you.

Or, join. Get the stuff and don't go back Grin

NoahVale · 13/06/2015 10:36

possibly true about the GP

I try to keep to about 15% sugar max in my breakfast cereal. Fruit and fibre is 24%. In other word, 1/4 of it is sugar! I like Dorset and rude health granola. Look at the labels before buying. I like weetabix too but I prefer less processed cereals.

HeadDreamer · 13/06/2015 12:42

And can you ditch the sugar in your tea and coffee? I drink them without sugar. And lots of water.

NoahVale · 13/06/2015 12:45

i might go for cutting out the sugar in my coffee, and change my cereals. i love dorset cereals,

A really good way to lose weight is not to mix carbs and heavy protein at the same meal and eat fruit on an empty stomach.

That way you can have a salad sandwich (no mayonnaise though) and in the evening fish with veg or whatever. Then for breakfast just fruit. It does work. Then there's no need to count calories or weigh food. Esp. with Paul Mackenna which educates your body to be aware of being hungry and always eat but stop when you're satisfied.

DurhamDurham · 13/06/2015 13:29

My husband has lost two stone from cutting out bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. He eats lots of veg, meat, dairy and some fruit. He feels full all the time, doesn't feel deprived and no longer has the mid afternoon slump that he had when he ate carbs for lunch.

hmc · 13/06/2015 13:46

Durham - I have had exactly the same experience as your dh. Protein is satiating so no hunger - and no afternoon post sugar slump. Could get quite evangelical about it!

DurhamDurham · 13/06/2015 13:51

HMC My husband is the same, he now doesn't understand why everyone doesn't eat like this. He said he feels like it is something that should be taught in schools Grin

hmc · 13/06/2015 13:55

He has a point!

ppeatfruit · 13/06/2015 13:56

That works well for some people, my dh also loses weight fast and is very happy too eating like that. But not for everyone, I can't eat too much of any protein;I got ill on the Atkins. I do eat carbs but no wheat at all. That is fine for me.

NoahVale · 13/06/2015 15:25

i am doing the myfitnesspal but i dont know how to change what I need to lose?

OP posts:
NotCitrus · 13/06/2015 16:08

Muesli with clusters or lots of 'fruit' (dried so practically sugar lumps) isn't great, ditto most flake cereals.

I swapped my bran flakes etc for porridge -bowl of porridge oats, cover with milk, microwave for 2 minutes - and add a few raisins or say a nectarines. More filling (so less likely to crave a cake at 11am), fewer calories, and also cheaper even with fresh fruit.
I try to stick to the idea that I can eat a 'treat' in 15 minutes time as long as I drink some water and go to the loo first - as those are actually usually what I need and often suffice.

Starlightbright1 · 13/06/2015 16:18

Can I suggest you weigh your cereal to know what a portion size is. Reduce sugar a half a spoon at a time. Increase fruit and veg.. what are you having for snacks?
