Just eating Good Food: Paleo ish diets

yumyumpoppycat · 01/03/2015 20:29

Hi All

New thread for chat and recipes or links to good stuff for those doing whole 30/ Paleo/ Primal/ Clean and Lean or any other diets with a focus on eating good food mainly from scratch or as unprocessed as pos. This basically means fruit, veg, meat, fish eggs and nuts but lots of diets include different grey area foods such as quinoa, rice, dairy and legumes. It is just a case of experimenting to see what works.

Personally I am aiming to ditch the phrase 'fell off the wagon' this year and keep the 80:20 approach in mind, technically this adds up to 73 days or 10 and a half weeks a year of eating the other stuff or grey area foods if we choose too- more than enough to cover birthdays, holidays and lunch with Granny! Mindful eating at these times though.

Ahh planning my whole 30 after next week....it'll be my third in three years, miss dat cheese tho!
Any tips for not being so hungry as still breasfeeding? It'll be a bit rougher than last time as my other half described I've not so much fallen off the wagon as having dived headfirst into a cake tin since tiddlerboy was born Blush

Chopsaway · 18/03/2015 20:52

I am thinking a frittata wedge thing would be good too especially with lots of cheese through it I am thinking of trying some sort of coconut milk/berry chia seed smoothie tomorrow. I was so hungry mid morning I got the shakes and had to have lunch at half past ten in a cafe Grin

However I am doing ok grain free which is good news. Finding it surprisingly manageable.

Chopsaway · 18/03/2015 20:55

Tootled good luck with whole 30. That is might impressive esp since you have a young child. I think diving into cake tins is v normal post baby - knackered and hormones shifting wildly! I don't know what to advise re hunger and breastfeeding but hopefully someone will. Might be worth googling the paleomom website as she is good for advice

Tootley · 18/03/2015 22:49

Thanks chopsaway, have done one since he was born, so know it can be done (it's just being prepared and think last time I was waiting for the all clear from GD so couldn't eat wheat anyway as when pregnant made my sugars go crazy), also I'll go have a look at paleomom :)
The op links are fab, theclothesmakethegirl has an awesome rogan josh recipe I've used for the last year or so...even my Mum likes it. Good luck ladies!

yumyumpoppycat · 19/03/2015 19:35

Toot ley can you do a really big online shop? We could all contribute ideas for a paleo shopping list, you must have lots of great tips if your on number 4! Is almond butter ok on whole 30? A spoon of that is really good and filling instead of cake - I got a huge tub of it in Costco. Make sure you actively add fat as hopefully that will help keep you full, I like the 4 pack sainsburys basic avocados and leave them in the fridge and they ripen up without any bruises. I find tinned Mackerel in extra virgin olive oil really handy. Sainsburys do sugar free smoked salmon and parma ham is usually sugar free. If you bake sweet potatoes do extra and make hashes for breakfast to have with eggs, really sweet and stodgey which can be good - possibly sprinkle cinnamon on if you like that or go spicy with chili. Asparagus, brocolli, and baby spinach are my favourite sides.

Ooh Chops horrible getting the shakes, how did you feel today, what did you eat yesterday for breakfast?

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 19/03/2015 19:37

Oh and white potatoes are now ok -perfect brestfeeding food!

OP posts:
Chopsaway · 19/03/2015 20:42

Yumyum thanks for all those tips you gave tootley, I am going to find that helpful too. I need to learn how to make sweet potato hash. I think I just ate some meat and berries yesterday but ovb not enough. I tried a smoothie this am but I really didn't like it so had extra ham and an apple. I have had no grains again today and no potatoes either and I am astonished by my lack of hunger. So weird!! Maybe it is just a good day but I feel so so much better mentally today. Really womdering now if grains really don't work for me. Did anybody else notice a change like this?? Also again my face looks different so much so that even my dh noticed! Such a big change in two or three days

Look forward to hear how you all get on!

Tootley · 19/03/2015 21:43

Brill tips, yeah I like grated sweet pots ( easy in food processor) saute with onion and chilli and put pan lid on top of for a few mins till soft..lush for brekkie, lovely with a poached egg on top...ooh nice to know about Sainsbury's...I know after much checking of labels Lidl's is sugar free too.
I know white pots are ok but I have a slight addiction to mash, so I tend to stay clear whilst I'm doing a whole 30...otherwise it'd just be a mash diet lol
Almond butter is fine :)
they have really good forums on the whole 30 site I looked at last night. Including a can I have info page.
It's lovely to have a mumsnet page....not so many UK people on the W30 forums!

Chopsaway · 20/03/2015 09:22

I love having this page too as there really doesn't seem to be many uk people visible in paleo land! Tootley I wanted to ask you about whole30 and what it was like when you ate grains again? Did you have a reaction to them?

The view in the paleo community seems to be that your body has a 'true' reaction to grains once you have taken them out for a month or so. I certainly had that with gluten but wondered if ithappened with other grains/dairy etc too. I am feeling so much better the last few days esp mentally that I am really wondering if all grains aren't great for me and wondered if others had found this out too via paleo?

yumyumpoppycat · 20/03/2015 09:47

Yes def good to have people to talk with Tootley Grin

It is worth experimenting with cutting dairy and other grains chops as you wont know how they effect you personally otherwise.

The really honest truth is that processed sugary stuff, and bread, in particular ..... makes me fat! Its as glamorous as that ...sigh (ok there are some other effects but that is the main one!) My face looks brighter and healthier too when I aim for paleo and exercise regularly. Someone asked me if I had lost weight yesterday and commented that i looked totally different, I haven't even lost anything for the past fortnight Confused

I think the main reason taking out stuff like grains works for me is partly because I find it hard just to have a little for whatever reason and that's what I am working on, because I want to enjoy the social side of eating and be able to have a piece of cake occasionally, esp as I don't have severe immediate problems with these foods (beyond temptation to binge).

OP posts:
Tootley · 20/03/2015 10:26

Erm being honest Chops I felt more bloaty but I'm with Yumyum I have put weight on when I eat grains and sugar(like 2 stones!!) since I started eating grains again.
I tend to be ok with rice but again I have to watch portions but I have a serious sugar monster. I like doing the whole 30 as it completey resets me. My skin looks better, I tend to be less hungry something my OH reminded me of yesterday lol. I'm lucky in that I don't really get any of the brain fog lots of people get with grain (OH being one) but I do get bloaty and lethargic and my psoriasis is worse. So my goals are to try to remain 80/20 when not doing a whole 30 and do an occassional whole 30 to reset...as I know from last few years I tend to drift a bit. I also know that dairy isn't fab for me - but I'm not one for anything but cheese and i can bearthe slight reaction for cheese.
How are you guys finding it? I'm wierdly looking forward to starting after DS's first b'day next week....(there's no way I'm making his cake and watching everyone else eat it lol)
I think maybe the bloaty thing makes a big difference to how you feel/look yumyum..or maybe that's just me.
I watched a program on beeb2 the other day with paleo people in...they were a bit bonkers but think theres a medium line there somewhere.
right enough jibber jabber...back to work Grin ...hols next week!

Chopsaway · 21/03/2015 21:04

I can identify with both of you with all of this. Yumyum I was thinking about what you said about going paleo mainly to control weight and I realised that is actually more than enough a reason on its own.

I have felt so much better although fell face down into an enormous vat of sugar today Sad I just can't do moderation of sugar AT ALL.

Tootley, having fallen back into sugar addiction this year I too have gained two stone (summoned up the courage to weigh myself yesterday). I can see with paleo my skin will get better and I definitely seemed less bloated this week. I have not lost weight at all but someone yesterday who had not seem me recently remarked that I looked really well. The biggest change this week though has been mood and I have a skin condition too so I can see lots of good reasons similar to both of you to do this, I think I need to learn to accept that if I feel better doing this then I shold be kind to myself and embrace it long term. I also see a lot of real purists/obsessives in the paleo online community and my aim is also very much to have a template and do 80/20 although not with suga/alcohol/gluten sadly!!

Hope you are doing ok this weekend! Back to it for me tomorrow as I was do feeling so good this week!

yumyumpoppycat · 21/03/2015 23:30

Chops sounds like we have both had a 20 % day today but never mind back to 80 % tomorrow Grin

I guess even if weightloss loss is the only obvious result that doesn't mean other good stuff, like stopping future problems from developing, isn't happening on the inside.

FavadiCacao · 22/03/2015 10:26

Hello, may I join you? :)

The last couple of months have been starch heavy. Unfortunately, I discovered how to make pasta with chickpea flour which tastes just as nice as the 'real' deal and it has gone downhill since. Blush
So here I am, in need of stopping old habits settling in before they escalates into stones, again.

ps. Sitting here with the roundest carb face and thighs, which I only get with starches (fruit does not affect me)!

yumyumpoppycat · 22/03/2015 12:18

Favadi Grin {waves enthusiastically}

Is it wrong that I want the recipe for your pasta Wink

I have downloaded keto clarity kindle book on to my pc and am thinking about going full on and scientific measuring ketones and carbs for a bit www.amazon.co.uk/Keto-Clarity-Definitive-Benefits-Low-Carb-ebook/dp/B00MEX9B4C/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=8-1&qid=1427025599 I am not 100 % sure if its a good idea, but will only find out by trying. There is an interesting section where Jimmy Moore describes that he had begun to gain weight and not feel so good despite thinking he was in ketosis and eating lfhc but when he measured his ketones using blood analysis he found he was no longer in keto mode. A year of measuring ketones and staying in ketosis (80 % fat Shock ) led to him losing an additional 80lbs and improving sleep etc and basically feeling better.

The book starts with mini biographies of lots of paleo and lchf experts including Terry Wahl and also has a good recipe section at the end from familiar paleo type names. The kindle version seems pretty good value really ... I actually did a recipe from the book this morning which was avocado fried in butter and I had it with spinach, eggs and smoked salmon....delish!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Yumyum I think it would be fair to say yesterday was a 120% day Grin

But yes you are right I reckon paleo does help prevent other things happening. Today has needless to say slid right into another 20% but I really will be back to it tomorrow. This thread is helping!!

And hello Favadi!! You made me laugh with notion of carb thighs but then realised i do get carb thighs too! Thought it was dairy every day but now getting that the bloat is probably carbs.

Given my poor performance in even managing a week I domth think I can venture into ketosis attempts but it sounds interesting and the recipes sound delicious so keep posting 'em. I have a recipe to make cauliflower bread which you eat warm as a side dish so I might try that this week but makes mental note to never learn how to make chickpea pasta

Blondii · 22/03/2015 20:42

Hello. I fell off thread as I find I cant always give up some carbs. It just brings on my feelings of disordered eating. So I am intending to do my best and eat really good paleo food but if I feel the need/desire for a piece of toast with butter and apricot jam then I will have one or a small chunk of French loaf with a salad with cheese and olives.
Can I ask what carb face and especially carb thighs are please? Smile

FavadiCacao · 23/03/2015 10:14

No pasta recipe for now, it's too dangerous! Unless, you really insist. I'll post a lamb recipe instead. Grin
I've only made the pasta because it's difficult to feed a sporty growing teenager on paleo/low carb. I watched my son cooking and eating an entire packet of pasta with a tub of cream, a large dollop of butter, thickened with parmisan and still feel hungry!

Hi, Chops! Cauliflower bread sounds very good. Can we have the recipe, please? :) Years ago I tried cauli pizza but it didn't work.

Blondii, carb face/tighs happens when, having been low carbish for a long time, I accidentally fall into a large quantity of starches such as potatoes, parsnips, lentils and more recently chickpea pasta and Genius bread... As carbs retain water, I end up bloating up and it's most noticeable on my face and thighs. A bit like the dairy gut, after indulging in cream or butter! Wink

I have been very good this morning: I have ignored the left-over roast potatoes! I had some fruit instead and I shall have the left-over lamb for lunch.
Slow Cooked Lemon Lamb
1kg of stewing lamb
juice of 2 large lemons
4-6 garlic cloves
1 small bunch of Parsley
5-6 twigs of oregano (or 2tsps dried)
Chilli to taste
salt to taste
1cup of water
olive oil/butter

Brown the lamb in butter or oil, add other ingredients and simmer at the lowest heat on the hob for 4-6hrs (or in a slow cooker).

yumyumpoppycat · 23/03/2015 20:28

Favadi lemon is my favourite so that sounds delicious , unfortunately lemon gives dp ulcers Sad oh well I will just have to make a portion for myself!

Blondii keep posting , if we were all perfect at keeping it clean we wouldn't need a fred!

We have had delayed dinner due to plumbing problems and I am going to prob end up eating random tuff for dinner.

Sorry for not being able to reply properly tonight but this is the link to the cauliflowers bread recipe which is on this blog post. Actually quite a few nice paleoish ideas here. My aim is to make at least one of these by the end of the week
www.bitingfit.co.uk/blog/?cat=21

(Only recently got an iPad and can only just manage to copy and paste a bookmark nevermind trying to do links...Blush )

Tootley · 24/03/2015 08:48

Hullo Blondii & Favadi, ooh lemon lamb sounds lovely, I like cauliflower rice (no actual rice) so bread can only be good Smile.
Made me grin at the carb thighs!
Few days left, I've been reading It Starts With Food to prepare, and I'm trying for paleoish days to ease myself in.
Hols are proving tricksy tho!

FavadiCacao · 24/03/2015 08:58

Poor Mr yumyum! Maybe you could substitute the lemon for a glass of white winein and add some lemon to your portion later.

Link worked...I'm really looking forward to trying the cauli bread, the recipe is quite different to the one I tried.

Chopsaway · 24/03/2015 09:00

I have realised that paleoish is an easier way to start than full on paleo/whole30 etc. just too big a leap for me! that book sounds good so I will have a look for it. I might attempt cauliflower bread tonight!

yumyumpoppycat · 24/03/2015 15:12

tootley good idea to warm up a bit first before w30!

Chops those recipes look really tempting, fab link as uk based?

Favadi that is a brill solution!

I have been making cupcakes for dp to take to work. I have yet to learn how to make cupcakes without licking the spoon at the end, luckily dd was on hand to help! Might be making baileys buttercream later so that will def be a challenge Confused

I found that proper paleo led to binge eating for me, so I'm also doing primalish eating, by basing my general meals around primal principles but eating other stuff if I
