Low/No Sugar

So it seems a few people are keen to try this. I am for sure. But I know very little about how to achieve it.

DD1 (3yo) has got obsessed with chocolate over the festive period and DD2 (5mths) will be weaning soon so I'm keen to get in a healthier place for them - as well as for my own good too. I could do with losing 20lbs plus my skin is dire, as are my moods and energy levels. I'm breastfeeding DD2 so find I get very hungry very quickly and am all too quick to reach for chocolate/cake/sweets/biscuits.

Not sure I could be a purist and go as far as cutting out potatoes or rice etc but I need to do something.

I could really do with a list of low/no sugar foods and meal ideas on which to base meal plans and to have a decent list of healthy-ish snacks to keep me going in between meals.

Anyone care to join/help?

I'm a stone heavier than 2 years ago. And 2 stone heavier than my lowest though that was ages ago.

Well done on the half pat, if you love running definitely sign up for another. I did the couch to 5 k and enjoyed it last year. But I've lost the knack now and yoga has taken over for now. Wouldn't mind adding some swimming though, I do like swimming.

amigababy · 13/01/2015 07:51

actually I toyed with the idea of an aquathlon, a swim then a run. I found a couple local to me in late summer but am too scared to try!! The most "accessible " is an open water swim. Out of my comfort zone and all that. But I do like a challenge.

Going to call at the newsagents today for a copy of Reveal . Hope you have an exciting day cake x

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 13/01/2015 10:50

Hold off buying for a minute a friend just messaged me on facebook saying she can't find it! I got a call yesterday saying its defiantly going out in today's release so maybe she bought the wrong week! That's me and my boy (that image isn't being used for the article) but if you see anyone that looks like that then that's us xx

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 13/01/2015 12:23

Ah oh my god! Oh no I'm all teary... Definitely think I don't want to read it :-(

It's just a shame that you have to break it down so much, you can't do how hard chemotherapy is any justice in 1000 words!

I'll have to get a copy for Dexter! He will be chuffed! Xx

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 13/01/2015 12:24

My poor dad will be fuming when he sees the state of himself in that photo of us in hospital! He was a broken man at the time!

Fcukfifa · 13/01/2015 13:41

I'll admit I was seriously choked!! And I have a massive girl crush now Grin you are truly inspirational!

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 13/01/2015 17:24

Thank you!

How did your weigh in go anyway? I've been relatively constrained today Grin

HearMyRoar · 13/01/2015 20:14

congratulations on the article letmeeat! Smile

I'm doing the no sugar for a few reasons. I had done it before and it resulted in a real change to the way I are. However, a lot of sugar snuck back over Christmas and it was becoming a habit again so I wanted to get back off again.

I also know I am prone to comfort eat when stressed and really want to avoid putting on loads of weight as a result of dealing with my mum's illness and death. I know it sounds a bit silly (lots of people say i should just east whatever i want at a time like this) but I have only recently lost the 2 stone I put on during a bad bout of depression years ago and I figure getting fat again really isn't going to help anyone.

Lastly I know from the last time I gave up sugar that I find my emotions a lot easier to manage when not eating sugar and that can only be a good thing right now Smile

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 13/01/2015 21:34

Thanks hearmyroar!

Lots of good reasons to give up! I actually found quitting sugar harder than quitting smoking! And if you relapse it's just as difficult!

I agree with you regarding not putting the weight on, I think it'll make you feel even worse during this difficult time and make you resent your circumstances and yourself for allowing it to happen! If you can avoid putting the two stone back on, it's one less thing to stress about! I'm sorry to hear about your mum, must be so difficult :-(

We've just booked a holiday for 4 months after DC is due... Given me a very big motivation not to get too big throughout the remainder of this pregnancy and even more reason to kick the sugar habit and get back into a healthier lifestyle!

Fcukfifa · 13/01/2015 22:52

I weighed myself today and exactly the same Envy

But I am about to start my period and also have stopped breastfeeding (say here with cabbage leaves in my bra!) so the extra milk my boobs are holding must be at least....ooh about 7lbs GrinGrin

Going to keep at it!

Hearmyroar, that totally makes sense.

Letmeeat, that is a huge motivation to keep at it!

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 14/01/2015 09:55

Def at least 7lbs! Ah it's so deflating (literally!) when your milk goes haha! Nothing to blame the extra lbs on ;-)

Going to try making some raw vegan snack balls this week! Seem some amazing looking ones of Instagram, absolutely mouth watering! Will share the recipe if they're a success :-D

Yoruba · 14/01/2015 22:48

Postman: you ran 8km?! Wow! I'm so impressed that's amazing! Would love any tips on getting started with exercise - I'm pretty unfit but would love to get started with running. Is couch to 5k a good starting point?

Let me: that's very brave of you to do :) other people will definitely not be thinking unpleasant things about your appesrance!! That's your inner demons talking!

I think I've done.. OK this week. No sugary breakfasts and have cut back on coffee drinking. Have managed to not snack on biscuits in the evenings too which is my major weakness! Did have 4 quality street at lunch time as I skipped breakfast and was starving cooking lunch! My own silly fault. But baby steps! I tried to do the 30 day shred on Sunday and it almost killed me! I was planning on swimming tonight but Ds is ill so I can't get out.

Thanks for the snack ideas too, will definitely try the popcorn :)

postmanpatscat · 15/01/2015 21:35

Thanks yoruba I've been running for years now and did a half marathon last October. Couch25k wasnt around when I started but I hear it is good. Come and join us on the runners thread, all are very welcome!

FringeDivision · 16/01/2015 16:56

Hi all

Mind if I join?

I am giving up sugar and sweeteners, in the hope of losing weight and feeling less bleurgh. I can honestly eat a whole pkt of orange clubs and still want more. That's got to stop before I make myself really ill.

I read that chromium helps with the sugar cravings, so bought some supplements from Holland & Barratt today. Even if they just have a placebo effect, it'll help!

Am still eating fruit and veg, but have given up pasta and bread. Am aiming for everything I eat to actually be good for me.

Fcukfifa · 18/01/2015 17:52

Hi fringe welcome!

I have been so busy this last few days, went to see ub40 on fri night, they was amazing!

Still haven't divulged in any chocolate, cakes, biscuits etc. Have also switched to brown bread and pasta.

Fringe a few months ago I ate a whole pack of club bars plus one that was in the cupboard and I easily could have carried on Blush

Most of my family/friends are more savoury people and all of a sudden seem to have developed a sweet tooth, or are subconsciously trying to sabotage me! My friend brought a family pack of creme eggs the other day, then a pack of twirls the next day. My sister came to visit me and brought a large curd pie and even dh who didn't touch a chocolate over Christmas keeps coming home nibbling on treats. I can't believe I haven't caved!

FringeDivision · 18/01/2015 21:10

Thanks for the welcomeSmile
Today has been hard. Had some red wine at lunchtime, which gives me the munchies and all my family have been scoffing chocs today.

Have eaten scrambled eggs with mushrooms and tomatoes and 2bowls of bacon, veg and barley soup. Plus a banana and a handful of blueberries and 2 glasses of wine. Have no idea if I can lose weight on this. Have stuck to no processed sugar though.

Hope everyone else is doing well

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 18/01/2015 21:41

Fcuk you are doing amazingly! Wish I had your willpower!

Fringe even if you don't lose weight I bet you'll feel a million times better. Good luck and welcome to the thread!

I've been dispicable this week. I've got the worse IBS and having a disgusting flare up at the moment, which means that I can't excersice, so therefore I sit around eating crap the whole time (making my symptoms worse!).

Went to see Kooza at the royal Albert hall last night which was INCREDIBLE, but the highlight of my night was getting back to the hotel and drinking full fat coke in bed and eating cadburys chocolates and Oreos :-D

Fcukfifa · 19/01/2015 19:56

How have you found today fringe? Getting any easier!

Letme, your at the stage of pregnancy where you can eat whatever the hell you want to eat GrinGrin

Who are kooza, a band? How unhip am I?! Ha! Coke and Oreos sound amazing!
I've had another fast day today and will be weighing myself tomorrow, if I still haven't lost anything, oh god will have to re evaluate!

Fcukfifa · 19/01/2015 19:57

You're that was meant to say.

And did I really just type unhip, I'm 27 ffs!

FringeDivision · 19/01/2015 20:54

Today I have eaten 2slices of organic multigrain bread ( the very thin but very dense stuff you get in Scandinavia) with full fat (but low sugar) soft cheese and smoked salmon with watercress and cherry tomatoes. Snack was blueberries and dinner was roast chicken, runner beans and swede/sweet potato mash. Have drunk fizzy water, tea and coffee (with no sugar).

I am missing chocolate very much but am not hungry. Am trying very hard to not worry too much about eating full fat food - it's so ingrained to eat low fat/artificially sweetened food when trying to diet.

Fcukfifa · 19/01/2015 21:01

Fringe that bread...well the whole lot sounds delicious! Do you know the name for it?

I also stick with the full fat version of things, especially butter, cheese etc.

I'm also doing the 5:2 diet and today was a fast day so I've had M&S beef teriyaki salad bites at 186 cals with a pear for dinner and a M&S tomato and basil soup for dinner with 2 seeded cracker breads. Just around 500 cals I think.
But god am I hungry! Will be going straight to bed after cbb to dream of breakfast! Grin

I also saw a practically sugar free bar of chocolate on Gmb this morning but can't for the life of me remember what brand it was!

Fcukfifa · 19/01/2015 21:02

Could I add also anymore times to my sentences Blush

FringeDivision · 19/01/2015 21:11

The bread came from waitrose and is just called organic multigrain. Found it by all the 'posh' breads. It is lovely - 143 calories per slice but it is so dense you eat less of it. The 2 slices I had today were one each for breakfast and lunch.
