If I could get breakfast right, I think I could lose weight

Breakfast is my failing, it's the time of the day that I am starving hungry and need to eat directly I get up. Because if this it tends to be toast with lots of butter, sometimes egg on toast, sometimes both, ie one after the other. I know the combination of bread and butter is my undoing as I am good at making healthy choices for lunch and don't eat dinner.

So. Can anyone suggest anything I can eat for breakfast that is high protein and either prepared overnight or in minutes in the morning?

I would happily eat porridge but I think it's possibly too fattening. I have thought about brown rice as I could cook it overnight in the slow cooker but I have no idea if it's any less calorific than porridge. I've also thought of an omlette. Trouble is I am terrible at making them but have looked at a few machines and am contemplating purchasing something that would make it for me whilst I was doing my partner and sons breakfast/lunch.

Oooh I also used to make a smoothie but again thought it was probably too fattening as it was full of fruit = sugar = fat.

I am rarely hungry at breakfast time but I choose high-protein options (bread or cereal, even porridge, don't fill me up). I like :

Omelette
Hard-boiled eggs
Bacon
Fromage frais
Ham
Egg muffins (can be made ahead)

I meant that when I am actually hungry, I choose a high-protein option.

I sometimes make a smoothie with fromage frais and a handful of frozen berries.

Thanks Senatus. I've found tuna has an amazing ability to fill me up!! I am lucky that I can eat anything at breakfast so I am not at all fussy. I just want to eat and feel full.

Porridge is going to be healthier than bread and loads of butter so if you like it I would have that. It's a realistic breakfast. Quick, easy to eat and cheap.

I have Greek yoghurt with muesli and honey. Really fills me up and I've been losing weight this year.

BravePotato · 30/09/2014 12:04

no dinner? no wonder you are starving in the morning!

QweenCnut · 30/09/2014 12:06

I have a banana and a handful of nuts - zero preparation!

NewEraNewMindset · 30/09/2014 12:07

I know, I hate eating dinner so yep, I am definitely hungry in the morning.

I have tried fruit and it makes me more hungry, I've tried Greek yogurt with banana and I end up still searching the house for food. I just want a one hit hunger smasher that I can either wake up to already done overnight, or I can shove in my face within ten minutes.

Soak some porridge oats in milk the night before and chuck some frozen berries on top, leave in fridge overnight and eat in morning.

NewEraNewMindset · 30/09/2014 12:14

I wonder how many calories breakfast should be so I can allow for that if I'm going to swap to porridge. When I did slimming world they only allowed 35g of porridge and it made up the smallest bowl, it never filled me up so i didn't bother with it. I still have that in my head though so I'm always a little cautious eating the stuff.

Porridge isn't fattening! It's perfect. Add some honey instead of sugar and used skimmed milk.

I'm no nutritionist, but I would have though spacing your meals more evenly through the day would aid you in losing weight (and be far healthier in general). Not eating between, say, 1pm and 8am the next morning is surely not a good idea. Why don't you like eating dinner?

I have been feeling hungry from about 10am recently (Breakfast at about 7.15) so today I had a smoked mackerel fillet sandwich for breakfast and I've only just started to feel hungry.

NewEraNewMindset · 30/09/2014 12:18

Zzzz I had success with 5:2 but then I had a bought of depression bought on by my TTC woes, miscarriages etc and I just couldn't get my head in the right place not to eat much twice a week, it felt too depressing. If you can stick to it though I know it's excellent.

I tend to eat breakfast at 7am then lunch around 2 and then I might eat something small around 5 so my meals are spaced. They just get smaller as the day progresses. I feel I'll if I sleep with a full stomach, I don't like it.

Do you know I wondered about wraps. I was going to look at the calories of them, also thin pancakes I was pondering about that I could have in the fridge and just grab in the morning. I love mackerel too but I'm not sure if that is too fattening.

I am thinking about calorie counting. I'm a size 14 and would like to be a size 12 but I do t want to restrict too much as I know it's not recommended when TTC. I was also loving the gym and doing tons of cardio and weights but apparently that also is bad for TTC. So I'm trying to stick to swimming daily at the moment and readjusting my bread and butter addiction.

4 MC did nothing for my waistline so you have my sympathies too. Happily I'm now trying to lose pregnancy weight Smile
I'm a porridge fan, I have no time to faff about in the morning. I use the weighed out sachets of plain quick cook porridge oats which are 100cals and 2.2g of fat (190 cals and 5.4g with the milk added) and add a spoonful of chia seeds, a spoonful of ground seed mix and a spoonful of berries (I go through a defrosted freezer pack of mixed berries in a week) I've ordered some coconut oil and I'm planning to add a bit of that too.
You shouldn't be scared of fat - you need good fats (omega fats) in your diet, particularly when TTC or pregnant - oily fish, avocado, nuts and seeds and coconut oil all contain good fats.

donkir · 30/09/2014 13:44

If your not eating from lunch until breakfast the next day your body will think it's starving so will hold on to the extra fat.
Eating 3 balanced meals a day is a much healthier way of losing weight.
Porridge is great made with semi skimmed milk and honey or chopped banana. Can be made over night in slow cooker as can omelettes.

NewEraNewMindset · 30/09/2014 13:49

Omg you can make omlettes in a slow cooker? I must google that!

I thrive on porridge - a cupful of oats in a bowl, cover with milk, microwave for 2 minutes. Add some nuts and raisins or fruit sometimes. Much easier than the stupid sachets which don't fill me up at all.
