Week 1 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp starts here!

BIWI · 29/04/2013 10:34

Morning all! There are over 150 of us signed up for Bootcamp, so it?s going to be busy I think. If you haven?t already put your name on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, here is the link so that you can add yourself:

Just add yourself to the bottom of the list and the lovely WillieWaggleDagger, our SpreadsheetMeister, will ensure that it is re-sorted to remain alphabetised. Don?t touch any of the blue columns!
We work in pounds, but if you are a metric person, there?s a tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet that says ?conversion? which will recalculate from metric to imperial.

It?s up to you whether you choose to enter your actual weight or to index it, i.e. you start today at 100, and for every pound you lose you drop by 1.

You will also see on the tabs on the spreadsheet the rules for Bootcamp, as well as rules for those of you who are vegetarian, and rules for Bootcamp Light, which you can move on to after two weeks of Bootcamp.

There are only 10 rules, and the thinking behind Bootcamp is that it should be as straightforward as possible to follow. If you follow the rules (yes, all of them ? and especially no 7!), you will lose weight.

The idea behind Bootcamp is that we have a strict fortnight of low carbing, to break the addiction that we have to carbs and sweet things. You are making sure that you are switching your body from burning carbs to burning fat, and you will go into what is called ketosis in these first two weeks.

All that this means is that you are fat-burning.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you haven?t done it before, you may feel a bit rubbish ? you may have headaches or just feel generally tired and achey. This is known as ?carb flu? ? and it means that you are withdrawing from carbohydrates. Sugar (which is essentially how the body views and uses carbs) is highly addictive, and your body will be craving it. Don?t give in! After a couple of days you will feel much better.

If you are feeling odd or ill, make sure that you are getting plenty of sodium, potassium and magnesium. Add salt to your food and cook with salt. Try making a drink from Marmite/Bovril. Good foods to include in your diet are spinach, salmon and avocado. Drink plenty of water and make sure that you really are keeping your fat levels up. Take some paracetamol if you have a headache (not aspirin or ibuprofen as these drugs can impede weight loss).

MaryBeardfanclub · 01/05/2013 21:39

ruby swede takes ages to cook - I boil it for 45 mins then mash with butter, it's always tasty if you cook it that long

my dp has low carbed for 3 days - amazing, he is a total carb addict. He did have a slice of bread today and yesterday but in fairness he did make it himself (with spelt flour) and it was a small slice. He says he is focussing on "no processed food".

yama you must be so relieved, thank goodness

Whatnameforme · 01/05/2013 21:57

I'm 35 and have 3 stone to lose. I've been low carbing for two weeks now and am breastfeeding, so I have to make sure I keep my calorie intake above 1800. I struggle to keep motivated and hope joining you all will help. I'll add my name when I'm on a real computer. Smile

HeirToTheIronThrone · 01/05/2013 22:01

BIWI a question - do we need to absolutely eat breakfast if we are longer term LC-ers? I did the first bootcamp in Jan and have been lite since, so do I need to worry about the blood sugar levels as much as the newer people?

Such good news Yama!

BIWI · 01/05/2013 22:01

Welcome, Watnameforme! I'm sure we can keep you motivated on this thread Grin

And no need to worry about keeping your calories high if you eat enough fat.

Good Lord, PLJ! That's a blast from the past! Wasn't there a diet where you had a glass of that before meals to reduce your appetite or something? I remember it from when I got my first Saturday job

Bessie123 · 01/05/2013 23:28

Yama I am so pleased to hear all ok Flowers

CrystalTits · 01/05/2013 23:30

Just checking in - and wanted to send my congrats to Yama too Flowers

B: spoonful FF Total greek yog, coffee with cream
L: homemade veg soup, 6 olives stuffed with feta
D: mahoosive pork chop, 1/4 of a slow-braised cabbage (OMG! delish!) and stir-fried pak choi
S: couple of pieces of Lidl smoked sausage

2l water, 1 sm coffee with cream

geologygirl · 02/05/2013 00:32

Congrats Yama! Great news!

Ive had some windy moments today as well...so maybe more water is the answer. Or is it the increase in veg etc that causes it?

Feeling fantastic otherwise and find I have lots more energy and focus to do stuff. Im revising for exams at the moment and definitely have improved concentration. Normally my brain's all foggy from sugar and carbs!

I had eggs for breakie, prawn salad for lunch and the leftover beef casserole thing that I made the other night. Oh and a babybel. So far so good!

Lavenderhoney · 02/05/2013 06:52

I'm going to have to exercise and do Pilates to help myself along or I'm going to sts, I know it. Might shred.

B- nothing as docs v early with dd as she is poorly
L- Brie and ham
D- lamb chops, aubergines, cauliflower

A few nuts in the night as been up all night with dd. lots of water and a few cafe creme

Dh had a couple of glasses of wine at work, and he was involved in a tasting so had to have a couple of small carby things. He couldn't say no as it was work, apparently. He has a headache but that might be the wine:)

WestleyAndButtockUp · 02/05/2013 07:00

Does anyone have recommendations for fitness/diet iPhone apps which work particularly well with low carb? Aren't most of them primarily focussed on Calories, or can they be re-focussed onto carbs?

MaryBeardfanclub · 02/05/2013 07:23

Whatnameforme welcome! I started lc after breastfeeding for 6 months - my natural weightloss had stalled for 2 months but still had some to lose and I have carried on bfing - now at 20 months. At first I did not know what I was doing, did not know about this fab thread but muddled through. So long as you are eating 3 meals per day and using lots of fat you will easily get the nutrients you need. My recent health assessment had a diet analysis and said my calorie intake was 3900!! I think that was an over estimate but my weight is pretty stable on that amount of food. I get fat into my diet using e.g. 1 oz butter for scrambled eggs, twice as much dressing as usual on salads, add cheese chunks to salad or parmesan flakes, spread hard boiled eggs with boursin (or butter), tablespoon of coconut oil to fry veg/meat, eat the fatty bits of meat - lamb fat/pork fat /chicken skin, pour double cream in my coffee. Yum Smile

Attackofthefiftyfootwoman · 02/05/2013 07:45

I can't keep up with the thread!! Not read it yet will do after school run.

I had a packet of skips yesterday (naughty) crisps have always been my. Downfall might get some beef jerky or something similar to substitute for the crisps.

But I am 1.5lbs down so my cumulative total is 4.5lb rockin & rollin now Grin

AngieAir · 02/05/2013 07:55

1lb down since Monday despite a dalliance with a can of full sugar cream soda yesterday. I did feel quite crap after it. And I resisted fancy homemade cake. Progress of sorts I think.

dawnpreview · 02/05/2013 07:59

Woohoo, 2 lbs down since Monday! I am so happy, I have finally dropped under the 14 stone mark. Gives me a big boost to carry on with this.
Off to make some scrambled eggs for breakfast now :)
Well done to everyone else who has seen the scales drop too.

milliemoomay · 02/05/2013 08:13

Thanks WillieWaggledagger - I'll check out those books as I'm already struggling with what to cook/eat!

I'm a 'standinfrontofthefridge' type and hope if I stare long enough at the contents they'll miraculously cook themselves.

B: Egg mixed in with half an avocado (I cooked the egg in the microwave for 20 secs and it wasn't too bad - a sort of poached-boiled hybrid Grin). Off to vinyasa yoga so that will help limber me!

Enjoy the day, low carbers! BH in sniffing distance..yay!

milliemoomay · 02/05/2013 08:15

p.s. well done dawnpreview - whoopity whoop x 2

BIWI · 02/05/2013 08:19

I'm a bit alarmed about the amount of cheating/falling off the wagon that's going on - we are only on day 4!

Seriously folks, this week is the one where you are likely to see the most weight loss, but you're already jeopardising that. If you can't stick to the plan in this first week, it will be much, much more challenging for you further down the line when weight loss has slowed right down - which it will, and should, if you want healthy and sustainable weight loss.

BIWI · 02/05/2013 08:19

Another pound down for me this morning, making it 1.5 since Monday.

Attackofthefiftyfootwoman · 02/05/2013 08:24

BIWI I am one of the sinners! I really struggle around 4pm and feel a bit shaky, had ot have a nap yesterday Shock today I place my Bootcamp pledge and promise not to cheat!!!

Loving the strictness by the way Smile

captainmummy · 02/05/2013 08:26

AttackOf - crisps were always my downfall too, esp the chilli ones! But since LCing (since july) I have had maybe 1 or 2!(crisps,not packets! Grin) And i know find them chemical-ly tasting, sweet, powdery, actually not nice at all.
Stick with it, and well done on the weight loss, all.

BIWI · 02/05/2013 08:30

If you find that you have to snack at around 4, then it means you haven't been eating enough - and probably not eating enough fat.

Or

Snacking is a habit that you have got into.

If you know this, then make sure that you have some low carb things to snack on and get rid of the high carby stuff that might tempt you.
