Hub ... I once saw someone at a slimming club be weighed the first week in tracksuit and trainers, then the second week she took her earrings, rings and necklace off, then stripped down to her underwear to be weighed. I wouldn't recommend it unless you fancy being arrested though Wink

Maybe next week's thread should be BigMotherf*ckers ... although that would probably offend more people than LardyArses would have done!

Sue, you're right, and I should have added that to my list. I do know what to do - I ought to, I've done it so many times before. I've always seen that in a negative light before though - it just means that I have failed often before. But yes, it's a positive thing in that all I have to do is get my mindset right (which in itself is a challenge!).

I like high fibre stuff too, but find brown rice a bit too dense. Good idea to mix brown and white rice. Do you cook them together - how long for?

I don't reckon the losing is the difficult bit... the difficult bit is the decision to start, and then, after a decent loss, keeping the weight off. I imagine we've all lost before, and usually regain the loss and more.

Better put on my best Y fronts next week then, toadie... Wink

I do it in the rice cooker SueJ, but if you just use your normal method for white rice it should be fine. I find that mixing them together stops the claggy-ness that you often get with brown rice.

For me the hardest part of a diet is a couple of months in, when I plateau. I get bored, and lose some of the enthusiasm that I did to start with.

I also tend to stop looking at the short term and think about the long term, and with such a large amount to lose that gets me thinking negatively because I know it's going to take an age.

I know what you mean WWB, I get fed up with being 'good' and having to pass on food that I know I love (Thai green chicken curry esp). When I was on WW I found that I was eating the same stuff over and over because I was easier than working out the points value for something new.

Maybe just have an interim goal then toadie. Still something a bit tough to aim for, but with a large number of stones to lose, the prospect is so far as to sometimes feel (almost) unreachable...especially as you say, after a few months when the novelty of the program can start to wear thin...

WWB - thats why i plan to take a diet break every few months ie no gain/no loss for 2/3 weeks perhaps as a reward for hitting certain targets. It will allow me to think - actually this isn't forever, just until I lose (say) two stone then I can have a few weeks of a "normal" diet.

Of course normal doesn't mean what I was eating before but what I'm supposed to eat...

And I agree that when you have an enormous amount to lose (like you and I) you really need to focus on the short term.

When I set off on my adoption journey (sitting comfortably?) I knew it would be a long hard slow process with the majority of people I came up against trying to make things harder (IMHO!). People I know gave up, other were lucky enough to have a shorter wait. Two years on from application and I still have no definite date to bring a child home but I will continue to plod forward because its the most important thing in my life.

When I first started I was told that intercountry adoption is a self-selecting process ie those that have the stamina and determination to get to the end are the ones who will make it. Does that make sense?

If we make up our minds, we will get there however long it takes.

Hi guys - I have done well so far today

Shreddies and semi skimmed for breakfast and a drink of water.
Low fat cheese and pickle on brown bread for lunch.
Healthy living cereal bar and banana for snacks.

For dinner I am having my spicy vegetable cous cous and more fruit.

I have been trying to drink water all day and walked to work and back which is 2 hilly miles with the 2 boys in the tandem buggy. I also did some hardcore waitressing for 2 hours Smile.

I actually feel energised rather than knackered Shock. Will probabably go for a walk tonight with DH and the kids after dinner too.

Reasons I should be succesful...

  1. I like low fat, high fibre food.
  2. I know how to diet.
  3. I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old to run around after.
  4. I dont drink more than once a week.
  5. I have support at home and on here.

No, didn't sound smug at all.

I think plodding on at something is somehow easier when it is the most important thing in your life - when I was pregnant and dd was the most important thing in the universe, I had no problem with eating well ... but it was for her, not me. I tend to put myself at the bottom of the pile, everyone else's needs are more important than mine, so doing something for me, like looking after my body, doesn't come high on the agenda.

And there's another goal for the week, I guess ...

I'm off to a fairly good start. I've been so busy rushing about that I haven't had time to pick at all the food I know I shouldn't be eating. I'm aiming to walk 70,000 steps a week but today has been so hectic that I've done almost 20,000 today. Shock

Positive things:



  • No car so I walk everywhere
  • Ds2 (3yrs) is Hyper-Boy so I spend a fair amount of time running after him
  • I drink very little alcohol (even less now that I'm bf'ing dd)
  • I seem to spend half my life walking to and from appointments and meetings (ds1 and ds2 are autistic) so plenty of exercise there!


Re-reading that, I'm not actually quite as bad as I thought I was. Blush

hello there - am back from the land of no broadband (my parents' house) now

things about my lifestyle that will help me lose weight, hmm:

I'm vegetarian so do eat lots of veg and fruit
I like walking and live near nice places to walk too - especially now the weather's looking up
I don't go out drinking much, and I rarely eat junk food (e.g. never go to McDs, Burger King, kebabs etc.)

that's all I can think of right now

I quite enjoy cooking and can make some great fat-free dishes as long as I've bought everything

When I get in the swing of it I quite enjoy exercising

I live in a great area and can buy most things we need within walking distance

Things I feel positive about re. my lifestyle.

I eat almost only organic food
I very rarely eat pre-prepared food
I don't drink tea, coffee or carbonated drinks
I exercise twice a week
I only drink about once a month (2 or 3 units)

Blimey, reading that list, I should be a stick insect, or possibly a saint!!! Shame I'm just a lardy arse!!!Grin

As we seem to be opening up to each other, I'll make a confession.

I'm starving at the moment (I'm being good because going out with my sister and friends for her birthday tonight) and I was starving just before lunch. So far so good...

It occured to me on the way home and I was pondering the strange rumbly feeling in my stomach that I can't actually remember the last time I was genuinely hungry because I hadn't eaten for a while. You know, not the hungry that is really because you know you're due a meal because you hadn't eaten for 3 hrs.

When my mum was having chemo for her cancer last year, she used to joke that if she felt so rough the chemo must be working... I have decided to make friends with my hunger!Grin

I'm hungry, diet must be working then!

(I'm not of course suggesting that we should all be hungry all the time, just appropriately hungry when the next meal is coming up!)

Haha, Littlefish, I was thinking along those lines...

My pluspoints are:

I actually enjoy being in the gym once I've dragged my body there (so how come I'm not a skinnyminny, you may ask... or at least an Arnie Schwarzenneger lookielikie)
I'm knowledgeable about nutrition (but not about calories - and I don't always (ha! ever?) put into practice what I know)
I eat organic and like salads
I consume vast quantities of fruit
I grow some of my own fruit and veg
I feel that basically, underneath the unhealthy looking exterior, I am a fundamentally healthy person

Suejonez - maybe the hunger thing could be one of the mini targets (or a major target!). We could all make a conscious effort to wait until we actually feel hungry before we eat, rather than automatically eating because it's 12.30, or because we're driving home, or because no-one else is in the house, or because we're bored, or tired, or sad etc. etc. etc. etc.

I know that I very rarely feel properly hungry. In fact, I'm not sure I really know what it feels like anymore.

I think that the only exception to this should be breakfast however. I don't always feel hungry in the morning, but I always make sure that I eat a proper breakfast (porridge or wholemeal toast). In order to start feeling hungry at breakfast time, I probably need to eat less in the evening.

suejonez , your last post strikes a chord with me too. I bonestly don't think I can remember how it feels to feel hungry. I am programmed to eat at certain (frequent!) times of day regardless. I wonder though if you wait til you feel hungry whether it will end up in over-eating? i am not sure . I think i read somewhere that eating small meals/healthy snacks but frequently asissted with weight loss ...something about keeping the metabolic rate higher, maybe but it could be a load of old bunkum, i don't know..xx

Talking of excercise, yesterday I went to a new libary with ds1 and we looked round and they have a small gym in the same centre. I used to go to a gym and it just brought back to me that I did like it. So I put Dh's name down to join Grin thought I'd send him first and see what he thinks then I might join.

I think it's good to do your market research and who better to that than dh Grin

I've only just had my breakfast and waited until I was hungry, which like others I don't often do. (2 slices of wholemeal toast with small amount of peanut butter).
