Sorry for the late start to this thread. I had an appointment at my gym for an induction this morning.

If you haven't already, put yourself on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Good luck for the week!

Just had the pork belly for tea - yes this late at night! Hubby worked late so was waiting for him.

Mega mega tired in body from the day and doing 30 Day Shred DVD. Going up go up bed after this baby dream feed.

Really enjoyed reading the thread today - BIWI I followed your slow roast guide thank you.

Please can I ask a favour? Is the tiffin and the flax seed bread on the recipe thread?

mumat39 · 07/02/2013 00:05

Hello. Hope everyone's doing ok.

I wasn't hungry earlier so didn't eat. Am really hungry now but can't be bothered o prepare something to eat. Any ideas for a quick snack at this hour please?

catinboots · 07/02/2013 02:11

Cheese and salami??

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 07/02/2013 09:32

Ooh Gless those meals sound amazing!

I didn't have pork belly last night - kale and chorizo which I ballsed up by burning the garlic. Might just have to have pork belly tonight! Thanks BIWI for the recipe - I am another whose DH always does the roast and therefore clueless on how to do it.

Agree Gless/Noel - I lost three stone (after DD - put on loads when pregnant) with WW and it was really hard work. Three and a half stone after the two DSs with low carbing and it was so much better quality of life - cant bear that low fat starving ravenous deprivation.

GuyMartinsSideburns · 07/02/2013 09:32

Morning!

Biwi - my dinner last night was LOVELY so thank you! Dh was well chuffed with the crackling! We're def having that again Smile My dd (4) thoroughly enjoyed the crackling too Grin

Not sure Im having breakfast as Im not hungry at the mo, will prob have a late breakfast/early lunch thing. Having fish for dinner tonight, with butter and veg.

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 07/02/2013 09:48

mumat just had yoghurt with tahini berries cream and vanilla powder for breakfast - that would also be a good puddings decadent late night snack (or with peanut or almond butter).

Or soup and cheese. Or cheese full stop!

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 07/02/2013 09:50

I hate predictive text - that was meant to say puddingy, not puddings!

I'm going to have pork belly tonight but I broke a bit of my filling the other day eating pork scratchings so I'm going to have to be very careful with the crackling :o

I got the Diet Trap out of the library yesterday and have flicked through - very interesting stuff

PostBellumBugsy · 07/02/2013 11:08

oh coldethyl, the school advice bugs me too. My DCs know my views on it.

Watched embarrassing fat bodies last night with DD & couldn't believe when they showed everything that one man ate laid out - it was obviously a vast amount of food, but significantly it must have been at least 80% carbohydrates (bread, cake, chips, rice, noodles, buns, baked potatoes, pasta etc) & yet they said the cause of his obesity was the fat in his diet. I was frothing at the mouth!!!! It could not have been more obvious what was making him overweight - as it was all laid out on a ginormous table.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 07/02/2013 11:21

Ds is 6 and I am just waiting for the school to start with the "healthy eating" message, I will be a one woman bandwagon annoying the head, I just know it!! Ds does have a more carby diet than I would like, but he is sloooooowly trying more veg and meat. He likes ham, as all the kids I know seem to, must be the salty tang, and chicken/turkey but has never ever taken to eggs or beef/meat/mince. He's quite good with his veggies, tho obv prefers the more carby, slighter sweeter ones.

The first time he went to a sleepover a few months ago, the mum asked him what his favourite food was, suggesting pizza or hot dogs? He said "rice, ham, sweetcorn, cucumber and peas please" she phoned me in shock Grin but I do hate the way in this country, especially in SOME restaurants, the assumption that kids will only eat orange or beige food, high carbs, poor quality meat, no decent veggies. Urrgh.

EwanHoozami · 07/02/2013 11:54

I am Hank bloomin' Marvin today. And in a massive grump. I'm not even due on Confused

I'm also annoyed at myself for letting the sweeteners creep back in. I need coffee, I can't drink it without a couple of Splenda and therefore I'm all artificially sweetened again. Bah.

B: Lidl yog
L: leftover spinach and bacon crustless quiche w/ green salad
D: jalapeno beef casserole w/ cauli rice

snack: everything in sight, if I'm not careful

fatzak · 07/02/2013 12:03

Please could someone point me in the recipe thread direction so I can add the flaxseed bread Smile

BIWI · 07/02/2013 12:09

I am eating my flaxseedcrackerswith pate and salted butter - I used a bit of butter in the recipe this time (as i used too much flax!) and they have come out like pumpernickel. Perfect with pate, cheese, ham or just butter.

B - leftover shepherd pie (with swedemash)
L - crackers, but also have asparagus soup on the go
Dinner - depends on whether the dc eat the rest of the shepherds pie tonight, or the sausages i cooked (3g carbs chipolatas from Lidl) or i might have a ham ommellette (If they eat the lot!)
But I really want the roasted red cabbage - I'd forgotten about that! It is gorgeous

fatzak · 07/02/2013 13:59

Thanks Smile

NoveltySlippers · 07/02/2013 14:06

Good afternoon lovely ladies

Feeling a bit rotten as I have a cold. Have been having Halls Blackcurrant Soothers for my sore throat, until it occurred to me to check the carbs - 15g for four Soothers! Yowzers!

In other news:

I have a new low carb cook book about which I was v. excited to cracking with.

However -

Was doing some Googling last night, and I saw that two low carb cooks (both authors of different books) appear to have put on rather a lot of weight in recent times.

(They'll remain nameless as it's not nice to discuss people's weight, which in future might come up in a search of their names / is a form of cyber bullying!)

I did feel a tad despondent though, on discovering this. Does it mean their recipes don't work, or that they just haven't been following them / heeding their own advice? Or does it mean that the recipes work, but it's just bloody hard to keep at them / the WOE?

Am really hoping it's not the latter.....

BIWI as our resident low carb guru, do you have any thoughts on this?

I could've coped with just the one example, but two of them who seem to have regained all their weight is a bit dispiriting. I suppose the answer is - yes, it can be tough. And one of them is a professional chef, so no doubt it's torture being surrounded by food all day, and hence extra hard to stick at it...? One of them is also quite a bit older, I know the older you get, the harder it is.... Hmm

NoveltySlippers · 07/02/2013 14:07

....V excited to get cracking, with sorry. Also - apols for essay (as ever).

Doshusallie · 07/02/2013 14:21

Hasn't India Knight gained all hers back too?

Zoe Harcombe has stayed 8 ish stone for years and years and years though.

Just back from my birthday pampering, divine. Grin

Greek yog
Pork scratchings munched whilst walking round Lidl (class) and a big bowl of last night's roasted red cabbage
Out with girlfriends so chilli with salad, pate and cheese and far too much wine

PostBellumBugsy · 07/02/2013 14:30

Novelty, I think even low-carb advocates fall off the wagon. The problem is that if you don't stick with this WOE to a certain extent, you will gain all the weight back on.

All of us will have a tipping point, so can tolerate a certain amount of carbs in our diet before we start to gain weight again.

I've been low carbing on & off for over a decade now & as soon as I start woofing down chocolate bars or big puddings (on a fairly regular basis) rather than once in a while - I start putting the weight back on. If I stick with lowish carb, then I don't gain - I can remain at a fairly constant weight.

For me the advantage of this WOE, over caloried controlled diets is that I don't feel hungry, I'm not losing muscle tissue & I look better - so it is much easier for me to stick to. And that is just from the dieting perspective - I also believe that this WOE is good for my overall health long-term.

in the same vein Novelty - 'Never trust a thin chef'. Well did you see that prog on TV with Michel Roux and his assistant/sous chef? Michel Roux is like a piece of string wi' knots in, but the other chef was about 4 times his size! Roux says he never eats properly, only bits and tastes of everything - so you'd think all chefs did that. I suppose everyone's different.

NoveltySlippers · 07/02/2013 14:53

Post - V true - and I totally agree about the health benefits of this WOE - it's indisputable, to my mind.

I just find it worrying/hard to understand how you could be so dedicated and go to all the trouble of writing a cookbook, with all these lovely recipes, and then still fall off the wagon. It just worries me, as it makes it seem like the task requires gargantuan effort.

I mean, all these celeb DVDs which follow some crash diet type fat - I'm not surprised when those don't work out.

But when you've been so thoughtful as to design recipes etc..... It just made me feel a bit despondent, you know?

Dosh was trying to preserve these ladies' dignity Blush (prob not v successfully).

The other 'case' is someone who's not British, older, the author of a v popular low carb cook book though. She really has gone back to obese.

Apparently Zoe was never very overweight to begin with, whereas if you're starting off from a place of being much heavier, I can see it's going to be a bit more of a challenge.

NoveltySlippers · 07/02/2013 14:54

Crash diet-type fad, not fat. Bloomin' iPad!

NoveltySlippers · 07/02/2013 14:57

Captain I've always wondered how Michel Roux Jr could stay so stick thin! Smile

I think I just got despondent as I was so excited (sad) to get my new cook book, and felt so inspired by it. Then I did the Google of doom..... (Really wish I hadn't now...)
