I F - 5:2 - 4:3 - Maintaining the healthy weight

TalkinPeace2 · 01/02/2013 16:59

This thread is for those who have been doing IF for quite a while and are now at or nearing their target healthy weight.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?

How to we ensure that this WOE does keep us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?

I have now been at the same weight for a month. I'm happy with that. I'm also still enjoying the 24 hour fasts because of the clear mindedness I get during them.

How about you?

TiP totally agree about the body fat scales but these have been the topic a few times on the other threads and each time we have pointed out that they are grossly inaccurate so hopefully people are getting the message (there was such a post quite recently). As I have body fat scales myself I always chip in and point this out.
But, saying that, I do like the fact that my scales show I have lost 6% fat whilst on this woe. Regardless of the fact that my scales at Xmas said 39% and my son's said 24%, I don't believe either of them but I'm happy that I've been shown a loss Smile

I know you're right virginposter - and I am very pleased to have lost the weight I have, just musing, I think, due to the number of "oh you don't want to lose any more weight" comments I now get. 30 yrs ago I would definitely have seen this weight and size as overweight - now I do think I look slim Hmm Scary really.

I think I'll just do it and tell everyone that I'm still on maintenance Grin

Hi cats .. this sizing thing is strange , but also the body shape and framesize has to be important in whether clothes fit. I'm 5'5.5 and just over 10st -(up to 10st 3 on a bad day earlier this week) , so shorter and heavier than you ,(I had magined you must be shorter than me so am surprised) but im in loose 10s on the bottom and mostly 12/14s on the top , but being you are so much taller and weigh less hat you are in larger sizes.. weird isn't it ?..

Yup.. vanity sizing indeed.. I now look great on my sz 14 monsoon dress bought for my 40th (im 55 now) and my sz 12 kilt worn to my university interview is still too small around the waist!

Laska42 · 28/02/2013 18:32

Filly Sad I hope it works out for your mum

catsrus · 28/02/2013 20:00

yes - very odd Laska - I got a smart lovely size 12 skirt in the charity shop the other day - as I get into all 12's I just bought it - but clearly an old size 12 Sad

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 28/02/2013 20:01

filly thinking of you & your mum. Chemo has to be aggressive to get rid of the tumour.

As far as body fat scales go I think they are useful to see if body fat has improved. When I started this my body fat was 45% now it's 37%. While its perhaps not accurate there is an improvement which is really what I would hope to see!

Laska42 · 28/02/2013 20:10

filly thinking of you x

laska I will try to fit in some more level 1s and join you on level 2 next week, I still can't do push ups properly yet though!

Love the idea of a raw fast Americas might try that for a change next week.

Laska42 · 28/02/2013 21:03

I do a lot of Yoga so the shred is not scary - but DH keeps teasing me that I dound like Darth Vader when doing the Pranayama.
If nothing else, fitter means stronger means better posture which makes you LOOK slimmer

AmericasTorturedBrow · 01/03/2013 01:11

Oh Filly thinking of you and your mum. Great though that they sounded like there is at least something to be done and it's not all doom and gloom.

I'm perplexed at sizing too to be honest, though I'm not old enough to really compare - but def 8/9 years ago I was a size 14 and about 11stone, now I'm 9.7 (whoop broke the 136lb barrier) but still a firm size 10. Though to be fair its just the sodding love handles I want going now - though wouldn't mind making it to size 8

My body is so tired- 4 consecutive days of Shred, 40min swim today, Broken sleep. My health and fitness still needs a boost before this bloody bike ride!

BetsyVanBell · 01/03/2013 07:02

Am pathetically excited post-weigh in, have now officially lost 3 stone in 18 months with 11 lbs of that in the last 6 weeks thanks to 5:2. The easiest 11lbs of all! Grin

Now to sort out the jiggly bits... Shred level 2 on Monday, no excuses.

BetsyVanBell · 01/03/2013 08:10

Scratch that, I'm doing Shred TODAY! On an empty stomach post-fast day, after 2 nights of terrible sleep... could go terribly wrong. Totally relying on weigh in excitement to get me through not the bacon and egg bun I'm planning to break my fast with afterwards.

Laska42 · 01/03/2013 08:51

whoo Betsy well done!! Grin

FlouncingMintyy · 01/03/2013 08:54

Betsy ... that is amazing! Congratulations Thanks.

Just to put another perspective on it: I have lost about 5 - 6lb in 6 months and my weight has remained the same for the last 4 weeks. I am at least 28lb overweight and my bmi is 29.

5:2 does not work for everyone Sad.

Dh has lost about 21-23lb in the same time, he still has at least another 28lb to go.

BetsyVanBell · 01/03/2013 09:46

Thanks guys :) Mintyy I put it back on so ridiculously easily (5 to 7lbs each holiday) that I rarely relax too much when it comes to food (weekends only really). In fact I've pretty much stopped drinking these last few weeks and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the lack of wine that's been the most effective thing! What 5:2 has definitely done for me though is the regular resetting of my appetite - so that eating less no longer feels like a chore. That's the battle half won right there. I think my BMI was 31 when I started being mindful of my consumption and 26 when I started IFing (now 24.3).

Shred level 2 - phew, sweating like I did when I started level 1! It's going to take me a couple of sessions to get the moves right but I certainly feel worked out! The cat was really helping me too - trying to get under my mat and attacking my hair during crunches - adds an extra frisson to the exercise.

Hope to see a few more joining me on Monday [evilBetsyface]...

Fillybuster · 01/03/2013 12:19

BvB whoop! congratulations :)

I'm feeling a bit cross with myself...24 hour fast yesterday, but finished with meal out with girlfriends (not 500 cals!). Wasn't a stupid pig out, and mostly v healthy, as a vegan restaurant, but I probably had too many nachos/bits of bread dunked in oil as we arrived at 8pm but most of the other girls didn't arrrive until after 9, by which point I was a) hungry and b) had consumed a glass of white wine on an empty stomach (bang goes 200cal) and lost all control...

Onto the scales this morning and they said 9st 10.6 :( :( Now in a workshop with a hangover and had 2 chocolate mini rolls and flapjack before any semblance of self control kicked in....

No chance of fasting until Monday, and weekend of social meals coming up....so so so p-d off with my own lack of self control!

Talkinpeace · 01/03/2013 13:32

(((Mintyy)))) Did you get anywhere with thyroid testing?
BUT think of it this way, even if the weight is stubbornly staying on, the endocrine health benefits of fasting are bound to be having a difference.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 01/03/2013 15:21

What TiP said, though I'm sorry Minty

Don't beat yourself up filly, it happens, and you did well to fast that long before dinner

I broke my week of raw food in a lovely date night with DH last night, a dirty martini, bottle of prosecco, goat meat and Harissa bruschetta, manchego and chorizo, skate wing, pea shoots and lemon risotto.

Oh, and TOTM! Not so lovely

Debating whether to shred this am, my legs are so tired and I'm going to yoga tonight

Breadandwine · 01/03/2013 15:34

Filly Any chance you can throw a 'mini-fast' into the mix? Perhaps miss out a breakfast or lunch or two? I'm doing this more and more recently. In fact, I've only had one breakfast this week!

Thanks once again for all your good wishes - my wife and I are contemplating all the toys, etc, that we bought for our kids which our grandchildren now play with - a big bag of Galt bricks, for instance; lovely model animals - which our 11-year-old granddaughter still plays with (we find them all over the house after she's visited - cunningly hidden in bookshelf corners, etc - great fun); a large colourful sponge ball, with a bell in the middle; wooden shape sorters, etc! Grin

BetsyVanBell · 01/03/2013 16:01

filly BUT I'll bet your night out with the girls was good for the soul though - very important.
