Week 3 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Full Fat or Light?

BIWI · 20/01/2013 17:08

So we've completed the hardest part of Bootcamp. Now is the time, if you wish, to relax things a little, and to move on to Bootcamp Light.

On the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will - after weighing in, of course - find the rules for Bootcamp Light. However, as I know some people can't access the spreadsheet easily, here they are:

Bootcamp Light

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado and spinach is a good source of magnesium. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:

Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Slatternly Mother - you crack me up - love it.

Star Shaker - oh my lord - you have to report this guy via PALS - absolutely terrible. Hope you are ok.

Cathy - loving the puppies!

Coldethyl - courgette baguette is the new black! I'll be scarfing that down my face tomorrow - sounds fab.

Right bit of a boring food day for me - was focusing on re stabilising after the electrolyte failure!

Breakfast : scrambled eggs and butter
Lunch: same but with bacon!
Dinner: smoked mackerel and the crunchy kale in butter and oil (I failed at that - it was disgusting!)
Snack: pork scratchings
Drinks: tea with soya milk.

Curbed my water again today and as a result feel bloated but I have completely stabilised so will drink more tomorrow.
Hoping to lose a bit more weight next week.
Well done ladies for sticking to it all.
And lastly a big shout out to my gorgeous big sister who is snooping on this thread! Love you xxxx

Starshaker your doc sounds a tool. Def change to the other one and tell the other one why. Can you see the nurse instead for some things?

The only people who raise eyebrows at my new slimness are the ones who get upset I don't want to stuff muffins and cookies. I think they are a tad jealous tbh. They don't like the woe as they are conditioned to go for low cal which isn't sustainable IMO and leaves you hungry. Vey amusing about the lady with the single ryvita:) no protein, nothing your body can actually use to function, except a bit of padding..

Dd still Poorly, docs later. I am so tired but not craving sweet fixes:) excellent!!!

pregnantpause · 24/01/2013 07:03

so yesterday I had
b- poached egg with a rasher of bacon and grilled mushroom
l- chicken wings, roast fennel salad (poured the chicken cooking juices over the salad as dressing)
d- roast beef, cauliflower cheese, and little gem lettuce fried in butter till rye edges are slightly burnt.
s- leftover chicken wings

Today the plan is

B- eggs on cocote
L- leftover beef and cauli cheese
D- salmon and avocado salad..
s- chicken wings /cucumber with cream cheese

Today is my first day back in work on this woe. I'm hoping I won't struggle as much as I anticipate.

GinotPrigio · 24/01/2013 07:34

WAH...moan alert here. After cutting down on cheese and cream to help shift my stall, the scales finally started moving down again. And then I go and get carried away with a large pack of raspberries last night. I am now 4lbs up - idiot!

BIWI please tell me this will disappear with a super strict day and lots of water??

BlackAffronted · 24/01/2013 08:00

Pregnantpause, I am also planning on having oefs en cocotte for breakfast today :)

Was so tired after Zumba last night that I just showered and headed straight to bed with a book. Had a great nights sleep! Feeling great for it today. Still spotting, its almost black now Shock and a bit crampy. Hope it goes soon, I have to keep postponing my smear test becuse it just wont go away.

Yesterdays menu ...

B - Scrambled eggs in coconut oil
L- ham & cheese & green salad leaves
D - Slow cooker beef stew
S - 5 pecan nuts

BIWI · 24/01/2013 08:04

Ginot - Superstrict couple of days and lots of water. You'll be fine!

I had a lovely dream last night. Someone (totally unknown person that my brain made up!) saw me getting changed and commented on how slim I was. And looking in the mirror I saw that, indeed, I was slim, with a perfectly toned abdomen. How lovely that was! And makes a change from dreaming I'm stuffing my face with a Mars bar or some such Grin

Here's a really thought-provoking piece that's worth reading/thinking about

It's obviously American, and I'm a bit Hmm about the idea of crowd-sourcing participants and asking them to pay to be involved - and some of the tips at the bottom are a bit 'woo' - nevertheless, if you think how many people on these threads have talked/complained about some kind of gut issue, it's worth thinking about ...

However, I need to warn you, as well as everyone else on Bootcamp about

The Week 3 and 4 slowdown

As we head towards our next weigh-in, you need to prepare yourself for the fact that it is not unusual in weeks 3 and 4 to see no weight loss. And sometimes, even if you have been perfectly behaved as if you may even see a slight gain.

Weeks 1 and 2 have seen losses based on emptying your glycogen stores, plus some water, plus a little fat. It obviously makes sense that you're not going to see the same losses on an ongoing basis.

From what I have read so far, it seems that it takes the body around a fortnight to switch from carb-burning to fat-burning. This is one of the reasons why Bootcamp lasts for two weeks - to help ensure that we have reached this ketogenically-adapted state.

I'm not sure why the next two weeks should see nothing happen, or a slight gain, but I have read about it so often, on various different threads and other low carb forums, to know that it is something that is likely to happen to a lot of us.

So be prepared for it. Don't be disheartened. Make sure you are following Bootcamp/Bootcamp Light rules, and keep on keeping on. After this short period of readjustment, you will start to see the weight disappearing again - albeit at a slower rate of around 1-2lbs per week. This rate of loss is much more sustainable in the long term.

You have been warned, so don't panic!

I have to admit I've lost the faith a bit in the last few days. I just felt a bit non-diety ladling cream over my dinner (I had chicken and mushrooms fried in garlic and butter, served over cauli rice).

Anyway, yesterday I got the new battery for my scales so I could finally weigh myself this morning. Since starting this WOE last Tuesday (so this is day 10), I have lost 10 pounds!!!!!

Thank you so much everyone - I really would have given up before now if it weren't for you and especially to BIWI for wielding the big stick :o Thanks ThanksThanks

captainmummy · 24/01/2013 08:25

Coldethyl - I am so going to try that courgette baguette! Genius! I have done the cougette 'pasta' but don't actually like it that much, it tastes metallic to me, although in the summer I slice courgette thinly (like about a £1coin) and barbeque until slightly softened and charred, then toss in garlic butter and herbs. thats lovely, and can be done in a frying pan.

However, last night I had carbonara with cabbage, and bacon, and a mound of cheese on top.

BIWI · 24/01/2013 08:28

Brilliant, Kiriwawa!

So why were you feeling that you had lost the faith? Wink

Feeling 'non-diety' is fantastic, as it is this which will keep you going and helps to make low carbing a WOE (way of life).

Kiriwawa · 24/01/2013 08:41

It really does go contrary to every single diet I've ever been on (and I've been on a lot of diets - I'm pushing 50 :o).

I did once get back down to under 9 stone in my early 30s by low cal eating and massive amounts of exercise (and I mean massive - I worked out for over an hour every day) but gradually put it all back on again and have never managed to get back there, despite repeated tedious dieting over the years

So we'll see how I do :) Right now, I'd like to get back to something approximating not 'really fat' for my CentreParcs holiday in summer half term

Jacaqueen · 24/01/2013 08:50

Morning all

Well it's a big day for me as Waitrose finally opens in my area!

As a foodie I love this shop and have been known to plan days out and pick holiday accommodation based on the vicinity of the nearest store.

Sad or what!

Will get some of the famous vanilla powder and the lovely mayo.

WillieWaggledagger · 24/01/2013 09:02

aw jac i would have let you camp out in my spare room - there's a waitrose at the end of my road!

(don't be jealous, it's very dangerous on the wallet and waistline)

Lavendersbluedillydilly1969 · 24/01/2013 09:22

Still trying to cut back on the tea with cream and drink lots more water but am worried that my water bill is going to treble with all the toilet flushing going on.

Made a gorgeous slow cooked mince thing last night with passata, tinned tomatos, aubergine, shallots, courgette, mushrooms and red wine. Added loads of chilli, onion granules, garlic, paprika and a stock pot with a couple of glugs of olive oil. It's really warming and I have made enough for us all to eat it tonight and prob tomorrow too. Was worried it might be a bit carb heavy but so divided up hopefully won't be too bad. Might try it with the courgette pasta I keep reading about.

This WOE is making me much more adventurous with what I'm eating, it's great trying foods and flavours I've never used before. I was always a bit of a packet/jar girl when it came to meals like this but who knew I could actually create something much tastier myself.

An a pound or so down on Monday so that's ok. This last half stone is tricky but as long as I can fit into my clothes and eat lovely food life is definitely good.

starshaker · 24/01/2013 09:25

Well I'm a bit miffed. Yesterday I decided to eat what I wanted and it involved donuts crisps chocolate along with my actual meals. Yesterday I was 16st 2, today I'm 15st 12 lol

catinboots · 24/01/2013 09:28

Oh my gawd.

I just had no-carb pancakes for breakfast.

Heaven.

Valdeeves · 24/01/2013 09:34

Kiriwawa - I'm going to Centre Parcs too in the summer. I was pregnant when we went last time and I felt like a whale compared to the teenagers in their bikinis! Hoping to look a bit more svelte this time!

Valdeeves · 24/01/2013 09:35

Btw how do I get back to the page with original Bootcamp rules on - I want to pass to my sis xx
