Week 3 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Full Fat or Light?

BIWI · 20/01/2013 17:08

So we've completed the hardest part of Bootcamp. Now is the time, if you wish, to relax things a little, and to move on to Bootcamp Light.

On the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will - after weighing in, of course - find the rules for Bootcamp Light. However, as I know some people can't access the spreadsheet easily, here they are:

Bootcamp Light

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado and spinach is a good source of magnesium. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:

Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Poor BIWI. You'll have to explain that you're our representative of (how many of us are there on this thread?!) X number of eager beaver low carbers as you read out your (long) list of pressing questions!

mumat39 · 23/01/2013 16:40

Sorry all. I don't mean to go on and on and on. Can you tell I get no adult company during the day. Blush

NoveltySlippers · 23/01/2013 16:43

That's why this forum is so good, Mumat!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/01/2013 16:50

BIWI - you must be excited

What you wearing?

Can I make you a T shirt?

I'm not sure what I'd put on it, but I'd have a good think.

the question of why the LCHF hasn't made it mainstream is interesting. It seems that over the years whenever someone has tried to raise it properly they've been shouted down by industry/those heavily influenced by food industry.

When 'pure, white and deadly' was published (?1970s) the dr who wrote it faced widespread criticism - from sugar companies!

There is no money to be made from people eating LCHF, other than for butchers, farmers etc who have no influence.

if you're interested in bias in research I recommend reading Ben Goldacres books, bad science and bad pharma, great reads and will change how you read health stories in the press forever!

QuickLookBusy · 23/01/2013 17:01

Just nipping in to say I made the creamy spinach soup from the recipe thread, this afternoon.

I didn't put in as much cream, just lots of butter. It was delicious and really warmed me up!

Starting to not feel very well, sore throat etc. managed to fight the urge to have a chocolate biscuit. Or a piece of chocolate. Dd very ill but asleep now, however I fully expect to be up in the night.

Made some lovely cheese thins with some leftover grated mozzarella, but left them to cool and dh and ds ate them all! All of them!

B- fried eggs, bacon, mushrooms
L- cheese, Celery and pâté
D- steak, leeks fried in butter and cauliflower.

Loads of water. And tea and a coffee with a friend.

Still very happy to be wearing my jeans I couldn't get near to doing up at the beginning of boot camp! Also, I don't seem to have those unsightly rolls of fat on my hips now. They are vanishing:) I'm still podgy, but a slimmer podgy.

But my face broke out in a couple of spots which is very unusual for me, I never get spots.

Love the puppies pic :)

Firsttimepig · 23/01/2013 17:51

Hi all, well in terms of progress I finding it hard. Getting sick of eggs
! Also my problem with over eating is rearing its head. I could eat endless amounts of cheese and nuts. I find it hard not measuring stuff. Can anyone give a weight for amount of cheese per day. If I've had a cheese Salad for lunch can I have a babybell as a snack after tea ? Nuts ? I'm following pig to twig so not exactly the same as on here. I am enjoying berries but again how many is too many ? Feel like I'm falling off the wagon.

Yama · 23/01/2013 17:58

Housemove Hell Update - we have internet!

Thanks to whoever added my Monday weight. I'll have a read through the thread once the kids are in bed and see if I can find out who it was. Smile

BIWI · 23/01/2013 18:14

Firsttimepig - stop eating eggs if you're getting sick of them! No need to do that on this WOE - eat whatever you want, as long as it's not too carby - and it's not something you have an issue with, like dairy.

Cheese is an interesting one; Atkins says to restrict it to 100g per day. However, as it's fat/protein and carb-free (pretty much, especially if it's straightforward cheese, rather than something over-processed) then I can't see why you would limit it - unless, of course, you have an issue with dairy. And the only way you will know that is by seeing what happens to your weight.

Re nuts - look at the back of the packet and limit yourself by seeing how many carbs there are. Same with berries - do you know the carb count per 100g?

Although we don't have a daily limit on Bootcamp, if you need a limit to restrict yourself, I would say that you should be looking at eating around 20-30g carbs per day if you're doing Bootcamp, and around 30-50g per day if you're doing Bootcamp Light.

If you know you have a problem over-eating, then it makes sense not to eat those things that are easy for you to eat! But, more importantly, if you are following Bootcamp rules properly and eating low carb/high fat then you shouldn't be hungry and you shouldn't need to snack.

Don't buy the nuts or berries then you won't be tempted!

Thanks biwi I have lost 9.5lb in three weeks and I have been eating cheese and nuts ! Ate berries last week and still lost 2.5 lb.
so I guess it's ok. I am not having milk only soya milk.
Maybe I'm having a wobble ! Thanks for the encouragement.

Ruprekt · 23/01/2013 18:54

Aaaaaaargh!!!!! The boiler has packed up and it is sooooooooooooo cold here!!

Another good day here.

B - celery and FF cream cheese. Staff at school said I was too smug and tried to make me eat a mars bar. But I Stood Firm.

L - Broccoli and Stilton soup

D - Pork belly which has been cooking in the oven for nearly 2 hours. DH is then going to make a sauce with the stock and veg and crisp up the skin. Celeriac chips with FF mayo and broccoli. Delish but not had it yet!

Water and tea and peppermint tea too.

I heart this way of eating.

PinkPeanuts · 23/01/2013 18:55

So wish I'd seen this sooner! Am I too late to join in??

NoveltySlippers · 23/01/2013 18:56

"Staff at school said I was too smug and tried to make me eat a mars bar."

Isn't it amazing that people do this?!

Lastyearsmodel · 23/01/2013 18:59

Not been reporting my food to date but just had the most delicious, much-needed comfort food supper - roast chicken thighs, cauli rice (genius stuff), braised leeks (my new go-to veg dish) and the creamy mushroom sauce from the recipe thread. Mmmmm, just perfect for helping me forget DD1's horrid behaviour.

I can't believe at my age, having cooked since I was a teenager, I have never really cooked with cream. Making up for it now!

Thanks BIWI, wouldn't be doing this without you and your dedication. You must be clocking up some Mumsnet hours. Thanks Grin

Doshusallie · 23/01/2013 19:03

The more the merrier PinkPeanuts!!

NoveltySlippers · 23/01/2013 19:07

Welcome PinkPeanuts! Someone will be along to explain the rules..... I would but am just about to pan fry some salmon and mozzarella! Check out the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness in the first post - guidelines in the tabs.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 23/01/2013 19:08

biwi if you are checking with Mumsnet about the recording, could you ask them about getting Dr John in for a webchat? I'm sure loads of us would get a lot from that. And I think mumat suggestion of a DVD is brilliant!!

I would also third/fourth the question about carbs for kids - I have a 6 year old Ds who loves Weetabix, oatcakes and rice, and the carby veggies like sweet corn, carrots and peas. I used to think oh he's quite healthy compared to kids that seem to live off pizza, sausage rolls and no veg. Now I'm wondering if there is anything wrong with his carbs. He certainly has enough energy!

Ps "keep calm and low carb" too naff for a tshirt?! Wink

ToomuchWaternotWine · 23/01/2013 19:12

And will just report my day:

B 2 eggs scrambled with butter and cream
L 2 slices of naice ham spread with pâté and cucumber slices, rolled up
S green tea and piece of my friends home made lemon drizzle cake whoops
D made the courgette gratin from page 3 of the recipe thread, looked a bit Hmm when I took it out of the oven, didn't think the Brie had melted properly but it tasted bloody lovely and I scoffed it all.

That was my last courgette and I must get some more as I really want to try the courgette baguette lunch idea!

BIWI · 23/01/2013 19:26

ToomuchWaternotWine - he's already been in for a webchat! Here you are

Pistey - I shall be wearing whatever makes me look thinnest!

Hello all, another good day for me:-

B= celery and cucumber sticks with ff cream cheese (am gradually getting used to having non-breakfasty things but planning pancakes from recipe thread for the weekend when I have more time)
L = cream of courgette soup and green salad with mayo and chopped chicken breast
D= mushrooms fried in butter with wilted spinach and a poached egg

Have drunk loads of water and herbal teas and am literally sloshing!

Have a good evening everyone.

NotMostPeople · 23/01/2013 19:43

Just popping my head in to say Hi. I was on the original Bootcamp thread, lost 24 lbs and went from a size 16 to a 10/12 but caved in over the summer holidays and have kept trying to get back in the zone. I didn't join in the thread as I'd tried to low carb a few times and failed so it was getting embarrassing.

Anyway I've got DH on board and we've been LCing since last Monday, I've lost 5 lbs and I think DH about the same but he hasn't weighed himself for a few days. Obviously I'd put a bit of weight back on as I'd given up in July but I'm now only 5 lbs off my slimmest point.

I'd forgotten how much better I feel on this woe, we've both been sleeping better, less stressy and I've noticed DH's skin is looking great.

What is this M&S pork crackling mentioned?

slatternlymother · 23/01/2013 19:47

Might try the courgette pasta idea tomorrow night; it does sound nice.

Made my own cheeseburgers tonight with beef mince, chillies, an egg to bind and salt and pepper. Fried them in butter, flipped them, put some sliced cheese in top and put the lid on the pan to let them steam a bit and make them extra juicy.

Served with salad and mayo, had a few Brazil nuts too (because I can) and made some Parmesan crisps whilst we were eating Smile yummy. Very, very satisfying.

PinkPeanuts · 23/01/2013 19:47

Thank you ladies! I started low carbing on my own two weeks ago and lost 7lbs so was really pleased with myself but I had minor surgery last week and my stint in hospital knocked me off course. I'm totally ready to start again, the only thing I struggled with was variety of food so I'm looking forward to pinching ideas from you lovely ladies :)
