Week 3 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Full Fat or Light?

BIWI · 20/01/2013 17:08

So we've completed the hardest part of Bootcamp. Now is the time, if you wish, to relax things a little, and to move on to Bootcamp Light.

On the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will - after weighing in, of course - find the rules for Bootcamp Light. However, as I know some people can't access the spreadsheet easily, here they are:

Bootcamp Light

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado and spinach is a good source of magnesium. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:

Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

BIWI Just HAD to say - that video of Dr Andreas Eenfedlt's talk is AMAZING (yes - bold and caps).

For anyone struggling with forming arguments to answer low carb critics, this talk gives you all the soundbites you need!

So very, very interesting and helpful. I'm going to watch it twice!

(And send it to my dad who is a low fat disciple. Not sure he'll listen.)

Anyway - thanks loads for posting that BIWI Thanks

...place marking for more inspiration later!

Only just starting a LC regime and stumbled across this thread.

Steak & a fried egg for brekky today, now off shopping to fill my trolley with LC goodness. I'm well behind all of you so won't bother with updates, but thanks for the inspiration - loving the links to recipes.

EwanHoozami · 22/01/2013 10:16

thanks Bessie I will have to remember what I've eaten and not think I've got some bizarre tropical parasitic disease Shock Grin

and a big HUZZAH to MrsHP. That's ace.

littlermissstan · 22/01/2013 10:30

Just checking in to say that I can really recommend Miller & Carter as an excellent lc dinner place, went last night with DP for our sort of anniversary and chomped my way through a giant steak with bearnaise sauce, spinach and salad with creamy garlic parmesan dressing... Yum!
Managed gym this morning, yogurt for breakfast and have avocado salad waiting in the fridge for lunch.
Hooray for the next stone bracket - I reckon I'm a couple of weeks off mine, cannot wait!

Bessie123 · 22/01/2013 10:31

I have been re-reading the burnt cake thread this morning. It is completely hilarious - I reckon I've burnt at least 100 calories through laughing.

slatternlymother · 22/01/2013 10:40

Well done MrsHP! Jealous of you getting past the stone marker, what a great feeling! You must go around feeling smug all day, I demand it.

bessie I need some light entertainment; work v slow. What thread is that?

BIWI · 22/01/2013 10:48

Thanks Yay, MrsHP! Brilliant work.

skandi1 - ouch to the migraine Sad Hope you can get some drugs sorted soon. I only ever suffered from them during my first pregnancy, and they were truly shocking.

valdeeves - I'm very worried if you say you have a problem with your blood salt. Is this WOE going to be good for you? Is it an easy problem to rectify? Please consider your medical needs before your weight

slatternly - it's the thread in AIBU about burnt cakes and a DH eating them when he shouldn't be. A really good wind-up, but it's disintegrating now into a bit of a dour argument because some posters don't think this kind of wind-up should be allowed because it's trolling.

Cross with myself because I've managed to put on 1.25lbs. Too much booze at the weekend.

A super strict few days for me, and I'm at the gym today, tomorrow and Thursday so hopefully I'll see a change by next Monday.

morning allBrew

been very busy here, just caught up on threads.
well done on all the losses, they are fantasticThanks
I'm working this morning, but have updated spreadsheet, I have lost 1lbSmile which is ok as not much more to go now.

Ilovemyteddy · 22/01/2013 10:52

Woohoo MrsHP Thanks

Isn't it a great feeling to get below that stone mark? Onwards and downwards.

Have been for a swim and a two mile walk already today. That's my exercise done, apart from clearing the drive as I couldn't get my car out yesterday. Then a nice quiet day by the fire, I think, with homemade veggie soup for lunch and spag bol for tea with courgette instead of pasta for me.

WillieWaggledagger · 22/01/2013 10:53

i missed your post about migraines, sorry skandi

one of the reasons why i went down the low carb route was because i was getting migraines, and i found that the WOE really helped reduce the number i was getting. it may not work that way for you, but i hope they improve for you one way or another

DoingItForMyself · 22/01/2013 11:21

For those of you looking for something crunchy, I accidentally invented a crunchy cheese biscuit while making toasted sandwiches the other day:

Just sprinkle grated cheese or thinly sliced cheese onto a non-stick pan and fry until it goes golden - the thinner the layer, the more bubbly and crispy it will go, although it takes a while! I've seen chefs do it in the oven with parmesan - might be worth a try that way?

Just spent £140 in Costco on massive packs of meat, cooked chickens and green veg - not even tempted to look at their lovely cakes thanks to a hearty LC breakfast!

DoingItForMyself · 22/01/2013 11:25

disregard, just saw cat's parmesan crisp instructions!

thekitchenfairy · 22/01/2013 11:47

Hello everyone ... I've just had by scary bad fat test...

First a great big Thanks to BIWI for producing this thread just when I needed it...

In November I had v scary trip to docs after a random fitness test showed I had too much body fat... And way too much visceral fat (the bad smelly stuff that clings to your arteries)... I was in the high to dangerously high level...

I have been struggling to lose the last stone after DS2 for 5 years now, and utterly despondent. Gym lady said a LC diet might help, as would attempting to gym 3 times a week, not just randomly. I was sceptical, and really struggling for ideas when... Along came BIWI and you fantastic lot Grin

I have had the rotten mick taken out of me now since fully embracing it, with lots of mutterings about heart attacks, yo-yo, plus cheese = cholesterol = sudden death. Grrrr...

Anyway. Am rambling, but will try to be brief.

Today, I have lost 6% of my body fat... yippee... and bad fat is now.... Safe In fact it is in the low end. I have more muscle and have lost 12"... And that's with Xmas in the way. :) :)

Obv, I am not medical, but I just wanted to share as some of us are finding unhelpful advice is getting us down... as no-one in my RL is really getting it, and I think you fab lot will share my joy!!!

thekitchenfairy · 22/01/2013 11:49

Never mind the fab recipe ideas and the losses.... PUPPIES!!!!! How 'citing.

And That burnt cake thread... A gem, not least cos it kept me away from snacking while digesting it and laughing raucously!

NoveltySlippers · 22/01/2013 12:02

kitchenfairy That is FABULOUS news!!!!

Am sure BIWI will be thrilled as will all the other campers. That is such an encouraging story - seriously. You could be the poster girl for the health benefits of LCing! Thanks so much for letting us all know. Hip hip hooray for you!

Kiriwawa · 22/01/2013 12:21

Gosh that's brilliant kitchenfairy - you must be thrilled!

thekitchenfairy · 22/01/2013 12:28

Thank you novelty and kiri

I am soooooo pleased. Made me feel much better about my small losses... Because its coming off the dangerous places first Grin while feeling a leetle bit smug as i can carry on roasting belly pork for the famalam, scoffing cheese and, smugetty smugness ... Enjoying cream in my decaf coffee!!!

BIWI · 22/01/2013 12:33

That's absolutely brilliant news, thekitchenfairy Thanks

You should be really pleased with yourself! And now you have the evidence you need to answer back to all the naysayers Grin

Repeat after me:

"Eating fat does not make me fat!"

PlatoonBuffoon · 22/01/2013 12:35

kitchenfairy I actually feel quite emotional reading your post. Ok, I'm hormonal and on the blob but I'm already starting to feel pretty evangelical about this stuff, and your post just proves the value of this WOE. It's amazing, you must feel so pleased.

ThisWOE has had such an impact on me, the penny has dropped, I will never go back to my old habits. I actually feel ANGRY, about the 'conventional wisdom' mis sold to us, the money I've spent on dieting clubs set up to make me fail, the guilt I was made to feel by the crappy dieting industry at for not being able to control myself. For so many wasted years.

But you can't really sell this WOE can you? So why market it? All it has taken is a lovely bunch of ladies, sharing advice and supporting each other, with no money or politics involved, and I feel like I'm finally going to be in control of food and weight for the first time in my life. I haven't seem the loses some of you have, but the freedom I feel is a completely unexpected side effect.

Results like the kitchefairy's completely reinforces what we are doing. I am so delighted for you!

Ahem, that is all.

WillieWaggledagger · 22/01/2013 12:44

thekitchenfairy that is bloody awesome

thekitchenfairy · 22/01/2013 12:47

Yes BIWI and platoon... It was a real leap of faith for me, as although my diet wasn't bad to look at, 10yrs of WW had laid down a dangerous toll, I had, reluctantly, removed all good fat to be replaced with crap fat... And told every week I hadn't lost because I'd eaten the naice ham not the WW ham Angry or had an extra egg for breakfast...

T then be told I was a heart attack statistic waiting to happen was frankly terrifying.

But here I am, and as you say Platoon supported on another one of life's major journeys by MN.

It's effect on the emotional me has been amazing... No more cupboard raiding, chocolate biscuits at dawn... Or feeling like something sugary will reward me.i think it will be a while before those sugar cravings calm down, but feeling v empowered today!

Lots of Thanks to everyone on this thread... I would not be doing this without you and your fabulous supportThanks Thanks Thanks

PlatoonBuffoon · 22/01/2013 12:51

I almost feel like we should write a collective letter to WW and demand our money back! Plus a bit extra for enforced mental cruelty Grin

BIWI · 22/01/2013 12:57
Grin

Platoon - your thread brought tears to my eyes as well Blush

I'm so glad that it's working for you. I, too, am very angry about the (continued) advice about what we should be eating to be 'healthy'. And it makes me wonder what it will take to change it?

OP posts:
slatternlymother · 22/01/2013 13:02

thekitchenfairy bloody well done! It's amazing how you get brainwashed by these massive companies, I mean I know it works for some people, but I honestly think that unless you've got a LOT to lose; it doesn't really work that well. And I think the reason it woeks well then, is because you will lose weight if you cut down on a heavy -eating lifestyle, regardless of who you do it with.

Yes as well to emotional eating being curbed. Sometimes I do think 'oooooh I'd love a chcolate bar' when I'm feeling down, or to reward myself. Or cheer myself up. Or because I've been good/bad/indifferent. I don't know if that will ever actually go. Maybe it's an inbuilt thing? But now, I think about how it's not going to solve anything, or make the problem go away, and I certainly won't feel rewarded. I'll feel rubbish. Like I've got a brick lying in my belly and now I've got to come and tell you all about it and confess Blush

This thread represents everything that I love Mumsnet for. The time and dedication people have put in answering questions, making a spreadsheet (bloody marvelous!), giving encouragement, positive solutions, kind words and support... It's fabulous. It really is. Thanks

mumat39 · 22/01/2013 13:10

WOW, thekitchenfairy!!! That's amazing and SO good to hear!!!

Platoon, i feel the same! I did diet chef this time last year for a few months. It was v.v. expensive and I lost a stone. As soon as I stopped tough the weight came back on and my shape changed in that the fat seemed to go around my middle as well as the usual thighs, bum, etc. at the start of this I weighed more than I had when I started diet chef!

I have some of those electric scales that tell you how much body fat you have. According o those I was 45% which is shocking!!! When I weighed myself yesterday, it had hon down to 42.6%. I'm not sure how accurate they are but those numbers are definitely higher than they were this time last year.

I do still think about sweet stuff, buti'm not obsessing about it. I even made some choc chip biscuits for my dc the other day and enjoyed the smell but didn't feel deprived by not being able to have any. It's amazing as that's the first ime in my life ever that I've not been bothered.

I'm worried about moving onto bootcamp light as I've never had much control over how much I eat and am worried that I'd scoff a whole pack of fruit without even realising. I've never been a one square of choc or just one biscuit type person. I've always just had o finish what I've started.

I've oy lost 6lbs over the 2 weeks but it's still a loss so yayyyy!

MrsHP, well done! Congrats!
