Lizzy the Original and golden syrup 16 packs of Oatso Simple were half price (£1.49?) at Tesco when I went yesterday. I stocked up, as my children eat them, though I know I should make a big vat of porridge in the slow cooker overnight. I will one day.

RandallPinkFloyd · 16/01/2013 21:10

I definitely agree with weighing portions. I've weighed absolutely sodding everything, even my salad for work. It's a huge eye-opener.

I would also say don't just blindly trust the MFP entries. Check envy single one. I've found quite a few to be less than accurate so have had to make my own.

The reason I've lost so much in my first week is because I'm such a lard arse but I've meticulously logged every single thing completely accurately. It's actually been quite fun in a weird way, it's appealed to my inner geek!

Lulabellarama · 16/01/2013 21:16

I do porridge in the microwave. I weigh out the oats and milk the night before with a big spoon of linseeds, leave it to soak, ten just give it 90secs in the morning. I've tried going sugar free but it's grim, so I just have a little sprinkle of brown sugar. delish.
I'm doing my online shop now. Any recommendations for particular meals or snacks you've enjoyed this week?

Lizzylou · 16/01/2013 21:18

Thanks Double, am still eating through the last offer they had, will stock up.
Buzzy, have added you x

nilbyname · 16/01/2013 21:21

lula some snack ideas

frozen soy beans, delicious cooked with some salt and chilli flakes,
rice cakes, salted or plain
sesame snaps
sugar snap peas

You can make hummus buy just leave out the tahini, add in lots of lemon juice, makes a nice dip for various veg.

RandallPinkFloyd · 16/01/2013 21:25

I like the sound of the soy beans.

DoubleMum · 16/01/2013 21:27

I've found the salsa dips very good and low calorie (have lots of out of date ones from Approved Foods which will be fine for months yet) but the tortilla chips are calorific. I expect there is something better to dip in it.

nilbyname · 16/01/2013 21:28

randall they are really yummy, my kids love them too. Minus the flakey salt!

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 16/01/2013 21:38

nilbyname How do you cook the soybeans?

nilbyname · 16/01/2013 21:40

Just pop them in some boiling water for 3 minutes, drain. Done. Simple!

Pinot · 16/01/2013 21:40

Lula, can you talk me through that porridge recipe please? Weights and whatnot? What type of oats? Thanks

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 16/01/2013 21:41

Thanks - I shall add them to my shopping list

RandallPinkFloyd · 16/01/2013 21:42

When my self inflicted poverty eases I shall put soy beans on the top of my list!

DoubleMum · 16/01/2013 21:44

I love soy beans. I lived in Japan for a while and they are served in all the bars - superb drinking food! Consequently I can't really eat them without a cool lager which rather negates their healthy properties ...

Lulabellarama · 16/01/2013 21:54

Pinot I use a mug, but have checked the weight and I use about 45g of regular porridge oats, then double the volume in milk. It's about half a small mug of oats and a full mug of milk. Tablespoon of linseeds.
After cooking I sprinkle about 5g of muscavado sugar and add a little splash of cold milk.

nilbyname · 16/01/2013 22:00

double I know! We had gyoza the other night there with no beer. Tragic!

WiseKneeHair · 16/01/2013 22:02

Welcome buzzy. I have sent you a friend request.
I have cold porridge in the mornings, I think it tastes nicer.
I put a mixture of oats, raisins, low fat Greek yoghurt, a sprinkle of canderel and milk in a large container and then just leave it in the fridge. I make 6 days worth at once. It's yummy and very filling.

DoubleMum · 16/01/2013 22:05

Nilby memories of drunken evenings in an izukaya eating edamame, gyoza and teriyaki chicken with lashings of beer. Ah well, can't do stuff like that anyway now I'm 43.

buzzybuzzybeeshoes · 16/01/2013 22:09

Oh those soya beans are lovely! They have them in the salad bar at my work canteen.

Quorn chilli and brown rice for tea, yum. Totally sabotaged myself with treacle tart for lunch - am about 1800 cals on mfp, 500ish more than my goal but actually I know I can lose at that IF I don't think ' sod it' and dive into the children's sweeties biscuit tin!

dinkydoos · 16/01/2013 23:54

Crap day here as was away all day till 930 Pm and then came home, friend popped in so had wine!
But, at least I have logged it all, and not just ignored it. This thread and the MFP really makes one focus!

Tabbykat · 17/01/2013 07:27

I think logging it really does make you aware of what you're eating. I'm trying to just have no snacks or biscuits as once I start I can't stop - can't just have the one, have to have five etc. Lunch is just cup soup and fresh veg - more filling than I would have expected actually.

Shredded last night for the first time in a week, followed by 15 mins with my powerhoop - so stiff this morning! Oww.

bleedingheart · 17/01/2013 07:32

Logging everything and being accurate helps so much. Was anyone else surprised by their results on the daily list? For example, I expected to be over my goal for sugar (nearly every day!) but I was surprised to see I'm well-under on cholesterol and sodium. I'm also under on carbs which I didn't expect a all.
Depressingly most days I've had nothing to register on my iron total so I need to address that.
To cut a long story short, sugar is my enemy!

Lulabellarama · 17/01/2013 07:39

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the sodium entries for UK food are usually way out. This is because the section to input sodium on MFP is in milligrams, whereas most UK food is in grams. So don't pay much attention to it.

I've finished Level 1 of The Shred, 10 days. I seem to remember hating level 2, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow :( I'm also fed up of trying to referee squabble between my boys while doing it. It's a stressful start to the day

bleedingheart · 17/01/2013 07:42

Thanks Lula, I've been entering it correctly for my own foods but I will check the 'library' ones from now on. I don't eat crisps very often or add salt to things but I do eat bread which I understand has a fair amount.

Lizzylou · 17/01/2013 09:16

Lula, sorry I typed out a big post of foods last night and laptop died. So I went to bed.

Food I have loved this week and will have again is the Food Doctor quinoa, very filling and tasty in salads and you can replace rise/pasta with it.
Also stuffed peppers are always lovely and low carbs/cals, I put quorn bolognaise/chilli in.
