Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:14

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Mumat39 - that sounds like you are going to need root canal treatment, as an infection has gone got as far as your nerve (doesn't need to be an abscess).

I've hardly ever needed anything done to my teeth: I had a vague pain in a tooth and my Mum's funeral coming up, so I went to see my dentist straight away. He couldn't see anything but an x-ray showed a tiny hole that he filled. it was still a bit sore, but I thought that that was just the filling settling in (I've had very few fillings).

Roll forward 5 weeks to the May Bank Holiday weekend. On the Friday it was getting quite sore - but we were away for the day. By the evening it was really sore and by Saturday I was timing my pain killers, alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol every two hours (so 4 hours between the "same" type of painkiller). I was in agony Sad. Tuesday morning I had the dentist on redial from 8am and got an emergency appointment.

He said the fact that I was so sensitive to heat and cold meant that the infection had reached the nerve. There was no swelling though!

I was a little peeved at needing to pay out a £100 on the root canal treatment on top of the c.£30 I'd paid for the filling - as if it had been sorted properly when I first went, I wouldn't have needed further treatment. But generally my dentist is really good and more importantly is still NHS! Grin

halfthesize · 11/01/2013 19:21

Pretty I had exactly the same thing as you nearly 4 years ago and like you ended up with route canal...

slatternlymother · 11/01/2013 19:25

halfthesize Thankyou, that sounds lovely!

NoelHeadbands · 11/01/2013 19:52

God I thought you said "sorry you're still a pain" at first glance BIWI. I thought that's a bit harsh Grin

mumat glad you're BP is normal, hope you get sorted soon

BigStickBIWI · 11/01/2013 21:26

Noel! Grin

As if ...

Pretty, I really hope it doesn't have to be a root canal treatment. :(.

I have been worrying about that though and I suspect you're right.

Thanks for sharing your experience, it must have been bloody awful having to deal with toothache at that time.

Take care and thanks again. xxx

mumat39 · 11/01/2013 22:01

Thanks Noel. :)

Can you tell me what yoghurt it is I am looking for please. Been to tesco and asda and really not sure which one .... They all seem to be low fat! Is there a particular brand which is better

DangerousMouse · 12/01/2013 12:44

I've just been told on the other thread that it's the eridanous greek style yoghurt from lidl, full fat, not low fat one!

EwanHoozami · 12/01/2013 12:54

Total full fat (10%) is good and usually stocked in the bigger supermarkets but the 1l Lidl tubs are king Wink

I had two tubs on the conveyor recently and the bloke behind me asked if I was going to eat it or paint the walls with it Grin

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 12/01/2013 13:15

Mmmm dont think I saw that Total one. Looks like a trip to Lidls might be on the cards. Thanks both.

Ruprekt · 12/01/2013 13:59

DH and I have lost a stone between us in 5 days!

However

Question

DH wants to know if this is a healthy diet considering all the fat we are consuming?

Why do the professionals harp on about low fat and cholesterol?

BigStickBIWI · 12/01/2013 14:40

ruprekt- there's lot of stuff about the whole fat thing - basically, back in the 40s (I think) an American scientist called Ancel Keys set out to prove a link between saturated fat and the risk of death from heart disease/attack and stroked.

He published his study (The Seven Countries study), and after this the US government, followed by our own and everyone else's it seems, adopted the mantra 'fat is bad'.

However, he was only able to 'prove' a link in seven countries. His data was actually taken from 22 or 23 (can't remember exactly, sorry) countries, where no link could be proved. But ever since then, the mantra has become 'fact'.

this is worth reading

If your DH is interested - and it is really worth all of us doing low carb to do this - he should read Gary Taubles "The Diet Delusion" and/or Dr John Briffa's "Escape the Diet Trap"

The professionals are only repeating what they have been taught.

And - always worth noting - there are some really big, global companies with vested interests in high carb/low fat foods. Think Coca-Cola, Nestle, Unilever, Procter & Gamble ...

Ruprekt · 12/01/2013 14:52

Thanks for taking the time to post all that BIWI. We are so loving this whole new way of eating.

We watched the link - inspiring and I am going to get the books for DH.

Thank you.

Check out my Burger Deluxe recipe on the recipe thread. DH and I are embracing new recipes!! Grin

BigStickBIWI · 12/01/2013 15:00

I'm not surprised you're converts with your weight losses! Grin

I have to say, the more I read about low carbing, the more angry I get about what we have been told/taught.

Xenia · 12/01/2013 15:07

In a way it's the simplest message but the hardest to proclaim given the demonisation of fat over the last 40 years.

If you want to be thin eat fat.
No one makes money from that sentence and there are lots of vested interests against it. When we moved from fat to sugar people got much fatter. (Obviously I mean good fats)

colette · 12/01/2013 17:04

Is there any connection between this woe and thrush ? I thought it should be the opposite but think I have thrush for the first time in years Confused

well done on all the losses !

BigStickBIWI · 12/01/2013 17:31

In the long run, colette, this WOE is much better for thrush, because you're not eating so much sugar. In the short-term, i.e. now, you're experiencing 'die-off' see here

To update you, I have been with a gyny all day. It's not my cyst which is shrinking:) he thinks I have an over sensitive uterus which he can't look at properly until the bleeding stops.

He, and any other medical professional I saw all ( and quizzed, even a nurse who popped by to collect a baby thing from my room, and the lady who did my bloods) said my new woe had nothing to do with my pain. or the shred either, so I can start doing that again when better.

Yama · 12/01/2013 19:29

I have a question. Dh bought some lovely black pudding today. He said look, "Only 0.4 of carb" so I had some. I've just read the ingredients and one of them is Demerara sugar. Obviously it's only a teensy bit but should the black pudding (that dreams were made of) be avoided anyway?

BigStickBIWI · 12/01/2013 19:52

Only 0.4g carbs in what, though? A mouthful?! Black pudding usually has barley in it, which does make it quite carby. Without knowing what the 0.4g refers to, it's a meaningless figure!

OP posts:
colette · 12/01/2013 20:21

thanks for the link, don't mind short term inconvenience if I am shifting fat around my middle

Yama · 12/01/2013 21:06

Sorry, 0.4 per 100g. No barley in it. It's like a wee mini gourmet one.

MrsHerculePoirot · 12/01/2013 21:50

lavender glad to hear it isn't thus woe or the shred. Hope you get some answers soon though.
