Is anyone watching BBC2?

There's a programme on with Michael Molesley about the benefits of it - it's very interesting and seems to have lots of health benefits.

Has anyone tried it?

I think in one of Dr Moseley's tweets this afternoon he mentioned less than 60 g of protein but best to double check Twitter.

TeamGBIWI · 07/08/2012 17:26

Yep - I just saw that figure, silver.

TeamGBIWI · 07/08/2012 17:26

List of protein contents of meat/fish here

blackcatsdancing · 07/08/2012 17:29

yes, i agree. Unless they were referring to the WHO guidelines.

Just found it interesting to hear about the IGF-1 hormone and hoping to hear more.

blackcatsdancing · 07/08/2012 17:30

thanks for links TeamGBIWI

ILoveStripeySocks · 07/08/2012 17:47

Seems there is some research going on with chemo patients and this fast? Or did I read that wrong on Twitter?

Viviennemary · 07/08/2012 19:42

I've just watched it on iplayer. It does make sense. I wonder what a typical day would be on 500 calories. It isn't much. I wish there was a bit of extra information saying how people could realistically do this and wht they would eat.

RubyFakeNails · 07/08/2012 20:25

Viv if you look up the thread I posted a 500 calorie day for me and so did a few others. It would typically be quite low carb and high protein. With filling up on fruit, salad and vegetables.

yehudiwho · 07/08/2012 21:05

Marking place. I was fascinated by this programme and jumped straight in today. Ate a smoked mackeral and lentils salad plus a handful of grapes, reckon it was near 500 cal and 40 g of protein. Drank tea with semi skimmed milk and water all day and went pretty well. Feeling peckish now but not impossible. If this helps with blood pressure and weight loss will be dead Chuffed. Need to lose 3 stone at least.
Would be useful to share 500 cal meals ,am crap at accurately measuring calories and thinking of filling ideas for meals
Will go for one late lunch I think. .... And an early night to avoid temptation.

Viviennemary · 07/08/2012 21:11

Thanks Ruby. I didn't realise the information was there!

hazchem · 07/08/2012 21:17

BIWI that link on protein is interesting particularly if the recommended amount of protein is 60g. Even on a low carb/high protein it would be pretty easy to eat just 60g and be quite full.
I'm quite keen to try this but think i have to wait til I stop breastfeeding.

vnmum · 07/08/2012 21:37

BIWI You would probably find that as long as you don't eat breakfast you will stay in ketosis and not actually need to eat anything on fasting days. The advantage of being on a low carb diet Smile. That way there is no need to count calories or worry about protein intake on the fasting days. If you feel you must eat something then just have a salad with fat for satiety in the evening. If you have fasted from the previous evening it will have been a 24 hour fast anyway.

FelixCited · 07/08/2012 22:40

Right, I'm in! 5:2 here I come :)
had a bit of a hap hazard trial run today - small meals and no snacking.
Feel ok will do my first day on Thursday - give me time to crack the calorie counting.
My stats: 5ft 5, 10st 6. Huge belly.. Size 16 :(
Given up the booze (slid into half a bottle of wine a night habit)
& choc 2 weeks ago in a desperate bid to have my boobs bigger than my belly.
5 yrs ago I was 8st 9 and a size 8/10 Eek !

Who else is in for 5:2?

silver73 · 07/08/2012 23:04

I am quite happy with this at the moment. I have eaten 4 small meals between 12pm and 8pm that were just under 500 calories. I feel no worse than I do when dieting and actually think I may have more energy. I'm thinking of going out and doing a bit of high intensity training in the next few minutes. 20 seconds of running very fast followed by a minute walking. I am going to do that for around 10 minutes. I really want to shift 9 lbs in the next 3 weeks if I can.

CagneyNLacey · 07/08/2012 23:30

Do you mind sharing what meals you had, silver? I am completely unimaginative with this sort of thing.

silver73 · 07/08/2012 23:55

Hi Cagney it is easy for me as I am on Slim and Save three times a day plus one meal. This means I have a shake, bar, meal and then I had a peppered quorn steak tonight at only 115 calories. This gave me a total of just under 500 calories.

Another good meal is cod in butter sauce. I got loads in Tesco and they are only 107 calories each. It sounds disgusting but cutting up a boiled egg to put in the sauce makes it a lovely meal. If you want to buy them check as some are 200 calories. If you are interested I will check the make for you.

Anything quorn is good as really low in calories.

CagneyNLacey · 08/08/2012 02:30

Thanks, silver. Quorn steak is a great idea, even though I eat a lot of Quorn on Slimming World it didn't occur to me to check the calorie content Blush I've never calorie counted before so this is a totally new way of looking at food for me.

FelixCited · 08/08/2012 07:07

Good luck to those doing the 5:2 fast day today.
Let us know how you got on!
Stripy: Thanks for the my fitness link to work out calories :)

Fizzylemonade · 08/08/2012 07:22

I saw this on last night and Dh and I were fascinated by it.

Both of us are over weight, I lost well over a stone on slimming world but just couldn't maintain the weight loss. It has crept up a little every month.

Dr Michael Mosley did a diet program a few years ago and they actually scanned people's stomachs after eating and then a few hours later. They tested in on people in the Army who were doing incredibly physical training exercises.

They found that even though they all had the exact same meal of meat, potatoes and veg, the ones who had it blended down into a soup stayed fuller for longer, not just on feeling fuller but you could see the food still in their stomachs. The ones who had the meal version their stomachs were empty.

I mention this as we are going to do the 5:2 diet and I am going to have a small breakfast and then soup later in the day.

Mondayschild78 · 08/08/2012 07:51

Right I'm in and starting today. Have decided to do Mondays and Wednesdays. I'm 5'6" and weigh 12 and a half stone. I'd like to lose two stone at least

I don't eat meat so plan today is porridge with skimmed milk for lunch then two boiled eggs and salad for dinner. Also a few cups of tea with skimmed milk. Possibly the odd black coffee and lots of water.

foreverondiet · 08/08/2012 08:01

I am going to try, however I was concerned about what they said about eating protein causing ageing - have been doing lower carb anyway and haven't been eating high fat food, with stacks of veg and some fruit. But I'd describe my diet as a higher protein diet ie around 100g protein a day.

Today will be soup for lunch and loads of veg and white fish for dinner.

alfiemama · 08/08/2012 08:23

I am the same forever. I eat a high protein diet due to cfs i have been trying an anti candida diet. This worried me so much I reached for a cracker.
On another thread over in health they said its the fasting that works and not the calorie restriction. So spreading it out over the day will probably not work.
I have to say I am confused. I've read lots of books like Brifa and Taubes and had wheat belly lined up. Now not sure what to eat and when.
I'm sat here wondering if I should skip breakfast as that would be a fast wouldn't it?

TeamGBIWI · 08/08/2012 08:25

There seem to be two different things going on here - calorie restriction and fasting. the first guy (was it Joe? Can't remember) was doing calorie restriction, but where Michael Mosley ended up, even though he was talking about fasting, was actually calorie restriction - whereas Briffa talks about a specific time period during which you don't eat anything.

Not sure which is the best or 'right' way to go!

I will watch/read with interest how those of you trying it get on.

alfiemama · 08/08/2012 08:35

I know in the programme Mosley had one meal a day but on twitterBlush he said he ended up splitting it in two. I wonder though if it would be beneficial still?

It has concerned me about the low carb, high protein and the go go effect.

ILoveStripeySocks · 08/08/2012 08:41

Im trying this today. Wish me luck! Had a great low carb day yesterday, so Im hoping ketosis lasts long enough for me today so that I am not hungry most of the day.
