What dress/clothes size is a 5'6" female weighing 12stone please?

OP posts:
TellyBug · 06/08/2012 22:36

At that weight and height I am a 12. Was wearing some 10s.

TellyBug · 06/08/2012 23:22

was Sob Sad

duchesse · 06/08/2012 23:36

I am 5ft 6 and would probably be a 16 at that weight.

Rockchick1984 · 08/08/2012 09:27

I'm 5'6" and when I was that weight (went a lot higher while pregnant, so I mean on the way back down) I was really a 14 but could squeeze myself into a 12 in most places as long as it wasn't fitted on the waist pre baby I fluctuated between 9 stone and size 8, and 10 stone size 10, so I've always fitted the theory of a lose a stone, lose a dress size.

I'm not fit at all though, so when I've lost weight my muscle mass has stayed pretty consistent so I think that makes a difference eg if I suddenly started doing loads of exercise my weight may not drop so much but I'd lose inches :)

Inneedofbrandy · 09/08/2012 20:04

Im that hight and weight well 12:2 and im a 12 on bottem and 10 on top. I need to loose a stone though. Am really suprised about the 16s, my mum same built and hight as me is 12:8 and 12 to 14.

Sleepwhenidie · 10/08/2012 07:43

OP I think the fact that you have had so many different answers shows that dress size and weight bear no uniform correlation to each other. Also sizes vary massively between shops, a standard set of measurements doesn't apply (even though it would be useful if it did).

Finally, most importantly for you I think, clothes have generally got bigger, by which I mean a size 12 fifteen or so years ago would be smaller than a 12 today - so don't freak out thinking you need to get to a 12 from then Smile, I would think that 12 stone would definitely have been a 16 at the very least when you were 15.

PurplePidjin · 10/08/2012 07:57

At 5'5" and 12.12 i was on the 16 side of a 14

At 11.7-12 i was back in some of my 12s, depending on brand and cut. For jeans, i needed to be under 11.7 but for most other clothes a 14 was clearly too big.

Don't let it get you down, OP, muscle is loads heavier than fat so as long as you eat healthily and exercise you'll achieve your target size :)

Sleepwhenidie · 10/08/2012 08:05

aargh, here it is again....muscle does not weigh more than fat!!!!

PurplePidjin · 10/08/2012 08:21

Oops, sorry, muscle is denser than fat

Therefore, the weight of eg your thigh won't change but the circumference will decrease.

PatTheHammer · 10/08/2012 08:22

I'm 5ft 6 and when I was 12 stone there is no way on earth that a pair of size 12 trousers from any era would do up on me. Size 14 just about if it was from a 'generous' shop. I could wear size 12 tops but thats more to do with your bust size.

I am now 10 stone 9/10lbs and a size 12 fits nicely on the bottom. Size 10 on the top.

SleepwhenIdie- I think most people are talking about density. In the same way a kilo of feathers weighs the same as a kilo of leadGrin Annoys me too!

PurplePidjin · 10/08/2012 08:31

Pat, i was comfortable in size 12 jeans at 11st. That was my conception weight and I'm very definitely a 12 in maternity clothes (24 weeks)

newpup · 10/08/2012 08:35

It is bizarre. I am 5'2" weigh 10 stone 13 and wear a 12 on the bottom and a 12/14 on top.

KatieMorag · 10/08/2012 08:57

Surely a person with a lot of muscle weighs more than someone who looks the same size who has a little muscle?

So if you took Jessica ennis who weights 9 stone and is 5'5" and stood her beside an average woman who wears with same size of clothes and has the same bust/waist/hips circumference, Jessica would be much heavier?

Or if she stood beside me at the same weight and height, I would look much fatter?

PurplePidjin · 10/08/2012 09:08

Katie, I'm 5'5 and weighed 11st pre pg

I can guarantee you that, despite appearing to be all healthy curves, i would look like a fat heifer next to Jessica Ennis :o

KatieMorag · 10/08/2012 09:32

Grin me too

Sleepwhenidie · 10/08/2012 11:08

Yes KatieMorag you are right, this illustrates your point perfectly. But that doesn't make fat heavier than muscle, just less dense.

Also the theory about muscle weighing more is so often trotted out on here to comfort people who are failing to/only slowly losing weight and newly exercising. Don't get me wrong, going from litle or no exercise to regular sessions is great, as is trying to be a healthy weight. The problem is that when you reduce calories and/or do lots of cardio - which is the method most women use to lose weight - you lose fat and muscle. It is very difficult to gain muscle without increasing calories (through protein) and doing very intensive weight training so to tell new exercisers failing to lose weight that they are doing ok because they must be gaining muscle is, in the majority of cases, wrong.

snickers251 · 10/08/2012 11:15

I'm 5"6 and 12 stone I like my clothes baggy so I think it depends on the wearer but yes 14/16 x

Sleepwhenidie · 10/08/2012 11:19

Blush... should read" make fat lighter than muscle.

Creamtea1 · 18/08/2012 22:09

Re vanity sizing
I have a pair of smart tailored debenhams trousers from 2002 in a size 10. I also have an oasis dress from the same year in a 10. So 10 yrs ago.
I'm a size 10 now and these fit fine - if I really analyse they may be very very slightly tighter than current 10's.

smellylittleorange · 20/08/2012 21:51

What sassy the first said goes for me too ! Except I am now a few stone heavier at 13.5 and a 16 to 18 but when I was that weight I was 12-14

smellylittleorange · 20/08/2012 21:52

have a look here this site is fab

realwomen body gallery by weight

DinahMoHum · 20/08/2012 21:53

about 16-18 if it were me

Freddiebump · 21/08/2012 06:42

It can vary massively. I'm 5' 6" and got weighed at my first ww last night and I'm 15st 6lb yet I wear a 16 bottom and a 18 top so I would imagine at 12st I'll be at least a 14. I've always been heavy for my size, if that makes sense! I was shocked last night as I hadn't weighed myself for ages, but going on friends who are a similar size and shape, I'd guessed I was about 13 1/2 to 14st.

lineupyourarmies · 21/08/2012 10:52

I am 5 ft 4 and weight 10 stone and I am a size 10/12.

At 12 stone I am a 14/16

chipsandpeas · 21/08/2012 20:49

im 5ft 5 and 12 stone and wear a 12 on top and 14 trousers
