A new thread for those of us who started in January 2012 and anyone starting now. Everyone welcome for support, encouragement and occasional arse kicking :)

Question:- on week 3 it says to run 200 yards OR 90 seconds. Which do you do? The one thats the longest? 200 yard is 188m and I recon I can do that in less than 90 seconds. So for that session would I go for the time objectives rather than distance??? Confusing :s

I've always run by time, its easier to measure.

Think that's what I'm gonna do. I mean I'm good at Maths but faffing when I've done 188m. Well it's a faff. Time it is!

Only had the option I measure time with my podcast so that's what I did.

Went out today with my friend, she probably walked half but kept a food walking pace. Ran back to her and then on again a few times. Did almost 1K less in 3 mins more than normal so not bad. Haven't put her off she's coming again Saturday!

Well, I did it! Week5run3 done!!! woo!!

I ran this morning before the heat of the day, it was lovely. I KNEW when I was near the end of the 20 minutes and was very glad to stop, but after a few minutes walking (and because I was a mile away from home!) I ended up doing 1min run, 1min walk for a little while on the way home too. Actually felt like I could keep going!

Worked out at about 5k/3miles in total, so pleased :)

That's fantastic Em3978!!! Well done for doig a bit extra too and 5K total is really good too.

I've been without my friend today and was 10seconds slower than my last 5k. Going with her tomorrow and think I might attempt some proper timed intervals with her this time.

Can I join? Been lurking for a while! W4R1 done today and I didn't find it too bad at all. I'm slim but woefully unfit - W1R1 nearly killed me!

I love how you can feel yourself getting fitter bit by bit. Every session is just a little bit easier than the last. Even if the runs are longer I feel more capable of doing them Grin

Hello clb Well done getting to week 4 :) It does get easier and and it is a great feeling to finish the podcasts, isn't it!

Did my 5k parkrun yesterday, think that makes 6 weeks in a row. Thinking that I'm not going to stress about fitting in two runs during the week this week, cycling and swimming and running can get a bit much and I need to find time to do more strength training - may be restarting body pump with a friend if we can fix a date. Going to keep going to parkrun though, want to keep hold of the feeling that I CAN run. Still several stone to lose :(

Out again this morning on w6r1 and it nearly killed me! much less running than w5r3, but seemed so much harder. Ah well, bad days and good days....

Hi everyone - I've not been around, but it's great to see some new starters and the thread still going. Well done everyone.

I've not been out for a couple of weeks, and not going to make it for the next couple of weeks either as am going somewhere very hot for work and prob can't fit my shoes in my my luggage as need to do hand luggage only (that's a feeble excuse, isn't it?). But I did a short one this pm with DD1 (7) on her bike next to me. She is v.inconsistent with speed so I alternated between gentle jog/more challenging run/walking and desperately trying to keep up. It was fun though, and she wants to go again. DD2 (5) not quite up to it yet. It was her birthday this weekend, and I have eaten too much cake. Onwards and upwards.

Can I join too?

I has Minikimmi 8 weeks ago and am trying to get back into running. I use to run regularly, but was told to stop by a midwife when pregnant. (three weeks later the other midwife said it was fine too but I'd not done or for 3 weeks so didn't start again)

I downloaded rhetoric Nhs podcast although found it too easy and ran the whole thing! I use the Adidas Mi Coach to record my runs so have downloaded a 9 week training plan on there and am sticking to it as much as I can. I need to go for a run today but it takes so long to organise!

I did W4R2 yesterday and found it tougher than W4R1! It might be because I had eaten too recently...does anyone else get this? Or find that a run they previously found okay was then harder the next time?

Bit disheartening really :(

Report
jchocchip · 30/07/2012 20:07

Some runs are just better than others, but I'm of the school of thought that the only really bad run is the one that doesn't get done. I did a really slow run this evening and then went for a swim. My reasoning is that slow jogs are less impact to less risk to my knees (still several stone to lose :(...) Will try and cycle tomorrow if not raining and get plenty of sleep before parkrun on Saturday.

Loads of us found W6R1 hard Em3978! Well done for getting out again :)

Sounds like fun dotty2!

Welcome karatekimmi sounds like you're doing well already :)

I often found the second run of a week the hardest CommunistLegoBloc! I can't run too soon after eating so could be that too. Try not to let it affect r3, it might surprise you. Took me a long while after finishing c25k to stop finding it really hard and having to talk myself into finishing every run.

Been to my running group today and we did different varieties of interval training. Was run by the lady from the Wednesday group trying to recruit for that. She says that a lot of us are not beginners and Mondays should be beginners. Weds actually suit me better but it's a bit scary to move up a group.

hi all!

its difficult to fit in runnning and watching every single possible olympic event possible. Grin

Report
karatekimmi · 01/08/2012 20:52

Managed to keep to the plan so far, although had a phone call 10 mins into my 30 min run to come back and feed LO! Haven't managed to finish it off either, I might need to go out tomorrow now instead.
I'm sure watching the Olympic games burns more cala than watching corrie or 'stenders . Although shouting for jamieson earlier was almost as energetic as his swim!!

was going to start a thread, but see you are all here already!

I have just started this but am so unfit its frightening! By the time I was on the 3rd 60 secs I was struggling (recovered ok with the walking). When I read it I thought with the walking inbetween I would hardly feel it. Wrong.

I am not overweight (though would like to lose a few pounds) and have no particular health probs, so is this a bad sign, is there any hope for me? Should I continue or is running the wrong way to go, haven't done any for years?

thanks

I hadn't ever run before I started in January welliwouldnt and I'm now happily running 30 mins three times a week. Trust the plan it really works!! There were a few ladies when we started this thread who repeated a run or two from each week but I found I progressed through the plan without any repeats and although it never got easy I was able to do it. I was 85Kg when I started and am now 60Kg which has made running easier but my fitness has increased massively so stick at it! Have started running with my friend who doesn't run and she runs as far as she can and then walks and I run back to her so I don't get too far ahead. She finds it hard but feels better for it and who knows we could be doing 10k's together before we know it!!

that's cinnamon. I would never be out of breath running up the stairs etc or feel unwell washing car, cutting grass etc so was wondering if I was maybe just not designed for running! the main thing today was trying to make sure no-one saw me. I will try to stick at it, would love to be able to say I can run 5k.

Did you (or anyone else out there) find the first few runs more difficult than expected?

welliwouldnt · 01/08/2012 21:34

I need to do W6r2 soon too, but my son has finished at nursery so is at home with me 24/7.
I'm not a morning or an evening person (soooo tired!) so I've not managed to get any runs in since last week :(

Make the effort to go in the evening Em3978, I have to push myself to go some evenings but I feel so much better for it! I can't run to early as it makes me feel very ill.

Have just got my iPod Nano from eBay and am putting music on. It has a Nike+ app so can measure distance and speed with that. Dh is stressing as it means I won't have my phone with me but it will be nice not to have it on my arm while I'm running :)
