A new thread for those of us who started in January 2012 and anyone starting now. Everyone welcome for support, encouragement and occasional arse kicking :)

Hi can I join?
I did week 4 day 1 yesterday... now I know I'm running. My poor little legs are a bit sore today. But, I am enjoying it soooo much.
Need advice on new trainers and other bits of gear please.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/10/2012 08:57

Well done dotty2 and megbusset sounds like good progress.

I used to find run 2 of each week the hardest juneybean, no reason to it when it's just repeating the same thing each week but most weeks it was! You'll be fine with moving up stay positive and keep a nice steady pace :)

Welcome shithappensx1000, I did some Internet research and then bought mine on amazon. The ladies I run with in my club all recommend going to a shop and getting fitted, you then know the shoe that feels right and can walk out saying you'll think about it and shop online for a cheaper pair.

Just finished week 2 run 2. With ds (age 5.5) on his bike! Very cute, except for me having to run slow when he felt like pedalling slow!

Treated myself to new running trainers yesterday, to replace the 20 year old pair I bought for going to the gym at college. Very comfy, I went to a shop and had a go in them on the treadmill the bloke checked that I was running with my ankles straight. I wanted ones with plenty of heel support as I am at least 2 stones overweight.

Hello everyone,

I was on this thread ages ago. Started C25K last January. After much hard work I managed 5k in 33 mins about 3 weeks ago. Sadly though I haven't run since due to toenail surgery. However, hope to be back in my trainers next week sometime though. Really missing it.
Shock

jchocchip · 13/10/2012 19:21

Hi Cece! Good to see you. Hope your toe is better soon.I did Whitstable Parkrun this morning. Lovely to run by the sea!

cece · 13/10/2012 19:27

Well done. I might feel brave enough to do a Park Run someday soon. Smile

Been trying to find a 5K race to enter that is local to me....

juneybean · 13/10/2012 19:58

I've just completed week 2 run 1, wasn't too bad, really felt it though!

Can any one recommend an android app?

jchocchip · 13/10/2012 20:55

I use mytracks to log my speed - it tells me how fast I'm going and maps my runs. Not very accurate under trees but good enough. I just use that and a nhs podcast or my own music sometimes.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/10/2012 21:54

I still have 4 more weeks cece so looks like you'll beat me to it!!

I used to use runkeeper but now use Nike+ on my iPod, its not as good but I don't have to take my phone with me just clip my nano on and go :). My friend uses edomondo and loves it!

I have found a local sports shop that fits running shoes properly, with a treadmill - as mentioned above. i will be going after my next pay day. i've already purchased some running leggings and a quality sports bra. Just need a top now. I have set a target of a park run - in 6 weeks time. Getting very excited about my increasing fitness.

cece · 13/10/2012 22:34

I use endomondo on my android phone. I think it is good. I have recently upgraded to the pro version for 25p. Although I haven't tried it yet due to not running at moment. I like it because I can play my own music but it updates me every mile with my overall time and my lap time. I find it useful.

MegBusset · 14/10/2012 23:31

Did W5 R1 at the hotel gym this morning - my first on the running machine. SO much easier than outdoor running - so much so that I felt like I'd cheated and need to repeat the run outside!

dotty2 · 15/10/2012 09:39

Hello cece and welcome back - we were on the original thread together way back in January.

I went out with DH yesterday morning (don't often get to run together) and he helped me push myself. He also has a fancy GPS watch and I was absolutely delighted to discover that I have cracked the 30 minute barrier - 29m 52s for 5k, and that included a stop of at least 20s I reckon to swap round keys that were jangling in DH's pocket. Very pleased.

I know what you mean about the treadmill, Meg. Haven't been on one for ages, but I used to run on a treadmill at the gym years ago and was horrified to discover when I tried to that that didn't actually mean I could run down the street. It's to do with wind resistance, isn't it?

cece · 15/10/2012 15:47

Well done on cracking the 30 mins. I'm aiming for that too. Smile Will get there eventually.

dotty2 · 15/10/2012 17:30

I'm sure you will cece!

MegBusset · 16/10/2012 13:03

Redid W5 R1 today, outdoors. As suspected, significantly harder than on the running machine!

dotty2 · 16/10/2012 13:18

Don't join a gym, Meg - running outside is harder but better!

cinnamongreyhound · 16/10/2012 14:34

So glad to hear everyone is doing so well! I've got at least 3 more weeks without running I dread to think how far back I will have gone! My foot is getting better by the day and I'm finding that I can get my shoe done up tighter each day and I'm walking on it more normal each day too. Still limping a bit as it's still painful to walk properly, not rolling all the way through my foot. Won't attempt a run until I'm walking totally normally without pain :)

Doing w2r2 tonight, tried to do it with DC but they were bored after the 5min warm up. So I'll do it when they're in bed!

Mumofjz · 16/10/2012 18:22

It is easier on a treadmill as its design is to drag you feet through the motion of a run. Outside you have to push yourself / legs through to move forward.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 16/10/2012 18:44

i did week 6 run 3 last night - 25mins running. well, more shuffling in my case, but i am still amazed at my progress so far. I think I will definitely need the speed podcasts when I finish.

dotty2 · 16/10/2012 21:35

Well done on progress, everyone.

Cinnamon -that sounds tough. But even if you have to start right back at the beginning, you will get back to speed eventually.

Had a frustrating non-run today - I was waiting in for something to be collected, promised between 10 and 2, and arrived at 3, 10 minutes before I had to leave for school. So I sat, unshowered, in my running kit all day to no avail.

Am doing a 24h sponsored fast from this evening until tomorrow evening, so definitely no exercise apart from walking tomorrow.

MegBusset · 16/10/2012 22:02

I was just kidding about the gym - even if I could afford it I wouldn't, as it would take me twice as long to get to the gym, run and get back. If I win the lottery I'll get a private gym installed at home Grin

dotty2 · 17/10/2012 17:35

Funny you should say that. I was fantasy house shopping last week and saw somewhere with a gym! Still be nice to get outside I think though. Have just finished 24 h charity fast. Not running anywhere any time soon!

MegBusset · 18/10/2012 13:11

Week 5, run 2 done!

20 minutes on the next run though
