A new thread for those of us who started in January 2012 and anyone starting now. Everyone welcome for support, encouragement and occasional arse kicking :)

my next run is w5 r3 and I am amazed that I am still enjoying it so much, probably because it's so realistic and I am seeing real results.

recovery is a lot quicker and I feel no pain on the rest day. so was thinking.... is it really bad if I dont leave a rest day?

MegBusset · 07/10/2012 09:02

Week 4 run 1 done :) I was worried about this one but actually it was fine! I'm probably running really slowly though!

cinnamongreyhound · 08/10/2012 14:21

Well done those of you still running!

3 weeks since I broke my foot and feeling less like I will run again then ever :(. I am walking quite a bit now and swelling is going down but it's still pretty painful. Got hospital on Wednesday so we'll see what they say then!

I re-started with week one after sorting out knee supports (again.....) and this time I managed to do all 8 minutes of running. Okay, I was chanting I can do this in time to my running on the last minute (silently) but still, it's the first time I managed the lot.

Will see how Wednesday pans out.

nothinginthefridge · 08/10/2012 18:48

Can I ask, does everyone seem to move on to the next week after doing the 3 runs, or do some of you repeat the week?

Just done week 1, run 2, and I'm not sure I'm ready to move on to week 2 after I've done the next run.

FryOneGhoulishGhostlyManic · 08/10/2012 19:01

I have been on week one for about 4 weeks, as I've had an issue with my knees in particular and have not wanted to try progressing until I'd got the knee supports, etc, sorted out. I managed a complete session today so will see how it stands after I've completed 3 runs. If I manage to do the complete session on all 3 runs I will go for week 2.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 08/10/2012 19:24

Not been on here before, so hello folks.
Fry, I just wanted to say that I tried couch 2k5 last year, and found it very tough on my knees. this time i started off only running on grass, to reduce the impact, and it's made a big difference. By week 3 I was ready to run on the road, and have just completed week 5 (albeit v-e-r-y slowly).

FryOneGhoulishGhostlyManic · 08/10/2012 19:38

I have seen a local grassy area that isn't used as a park so fewer people around. May try that. Being 16 stone (maybe less now, need to weigh myself) does have an effect.

I have discovered one drawback. I need to ensure I go to the loo before starting out as gravity has some unwanted effects.....Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 08/10/2012 20:38

I didn't repeat any nothinginthefridge but I know others did. I would strongly advise that you try the first run of the next week as you'll be surprised what you can do. If you find it too tough then personally I'd repeat that run until you complete it but others have repeated until they feel ready to move on.

OP posts:
MegBusset · 09/10/2012 13:31

Week 4 run 2 done :)

I would also advise trying the next level up, even if you do it really slowly, you may be amazed how your stamina grows without you realising. I really thought I would struggle with the leap to w4 but have found it fine!

dotty2 · 09/10/2012 14:43

Hello everyone - have been focusing my energy on the low carb bootcamp and neglecting you lot. Well done to everyone making progress - week 4 meg, that's fantastic. And second the advice to nothinginthefridge to move up and see how it goes. I often surprised myself by thinking I wouldn't be able to manage the next level, and then doing it - which feels fantastically motivating.

Had a hard run today and didn't feel I had much zip in my legs, but think that's down to swimming more than I usually do yesterday (did 40 lengths which is a lot for me, am not a v.strong or quick swimmer). Good runs and bad runs - the important thing is just to keep going.

Haven't had time to read all the way back up the thread, but hope your foot is doing well, cinnamon. We need you back on the road!

juneybean · 09/10/2012 15:56

Hello, can I join? I started on Thursday night but haven't had chance to do it since, going to do week 1 run 2 tonight Grin

UmBongo · 10/10/2012 14:08

Hello! Another new runner here, I got as far as week 5 run 3 last year (20 minutes - who knew I could do that!) then I hurt my ankle, then dd happened! She is now 5.5 months so I need to start again.

Good luck for run 2 juneybean and I hope the hospital appt went well cinnamon

nothinginthefridge · 10/10/2012 14:22

Thanks cinnamon and dotty, I'll give week 2 a go and see how I get on. DH said I ran faster the last run I did, so maybe that's why I haven't felt ready to move on.

FryOneGhoulishGhostlyManic · 10/10/2012 19:00

I did week 1 run 2 today and managed the entire thing, so if run 3 goes okay (no dodgy knees etc) I'll move up to week 2 next week.

juneybean · 10/10/2012 19:41

My week 1 run 2 went well, will do week 1 run 3 on Friday night. I know we're meant to take a days break but do you think I could do week 1 run 1 on Saturday, I find it easier and am more likely to do it when I'm working evenings

yehudiwho · 10/10/2012 19:47

Well hello. I was part of the Jan starters and lost touch with the thread.
I am still going out but only once a week these days. Well done everyone starting and continuing

jchocchip · 10/10/2012 21:06

Yehudiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! Glad to hear that you are still up and running :)

cinnamongreyhound · 11/10/2012 00:00

Welcome Juneybean and Umbongo, well done on getting started (again)!

Hi yehudiwho glad to hear you're still running. I've had an enforced break due to a broken foot. Dr said today I shouldn't try to run until 8 weeks after I broke it so 4 1/2 weeks to go! Still I can now wear a flat shoe and walk normally :)

OP posts:
dotty2 · 11/10/2012 09:28

Hi yehudi - great to hear that you're still running. Me too - usually 2 or 3 times a week. I am so pleased with myself for getting up to 5k and keeping it up this long. I think it is the only NY resolution I have actually ever kept!

juneybean - I think it is good to have day's rest if you possibly can. But if you do go for it, don't be surprised/discouraged if you find it harder than normal.

juneybean · 11/10/2012 11:15

I'll give it a try, if I find it hard I might repeat week 1 day 3

dotty2 · 11/10/2012 12:18

Just been out and done the C25k+ speed programme. Still finding it tough but nearly managed it this time, so am improving. (It's an interval programme, alternating bursts of fast and steadier running - can't quite keep up the fast pace for a full minute yet.)

MegBusset · 11/10/2012 13:08

Week 4 complete :) Third run in five days which has been tough on the thighs. I won't be running now til Monday (off spa weekend with girlfriends) so hopefully the legs'll have a chance to recover!

nothinginthefridge · 12/10/2012 09:01

Finished all 3 runs on week one at the gym last night. Onto week 2 on Saturday Smile

juneybean · 12/10/2012 20:45

Oof found week 1 run 3 harder than w1r1, will try w2r1 tomorrow but not sure if I'll manage
