Best/easiest low carb diet?

mumofjust1 · 24/06/2012 22:39

I think this is what I need.

Someone here said it was good for PCOS, which I have, and I'm getting really bloated when I eat pasta and bread.

Is there a low carb diet that's easy to follow and will actually work?

What do I need to know about low carb?

Just had 2 slices of toast and am so bloated I can hardly breathe!

I use Tescodiets. Am finding it really easy (can't give up the chocolate though lol) and have dropped 6lbs this week. :)

HamblesHandbag · 25/06/2012 10:39

Google Idiot Proof Diet, very easy to follow with no counting or weighing.

NigellasGuest · 25/06/2012 12:13

idiot proof diet works really well with BIWI's WOE too.

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 19:31

So today I have had:

2 bags of walkers lights 28.2 carbs

2 apples - no idea of carbs

A salad of lettuce, celery, green peppers, cucumber with a small tin of tuna and some full fat hellmans

A chicken breast wrapped in bacon with a small bit of cheddar

A crashing headache :(

2 cups of tea - no sugar, touch of milk, 1 cup of white tea, 1 cup cammomile tea

2 pepperami's

I'm getting this all wrong aren't I?

And I feel sick :(

Will have a look at the idiot proof diet - thanks :)

First off - cut out the crisps. That is way too many carbs.

There are around 22g carbs in an average apple, so add that to the crisps and you have eaten over 70g carbs before you even got to your lunch! If you were doing Atkins induction, as an example, you would only be allowed 20g carbs all day.

Some observations/comments/suggestions:

  • you need to have breakfast. It doesn't have to be much, but you need something. A boiled egg, perhaps?
  • your salad was great for lunch - and you need to add an oily dressing to it as well
  • the chicken breast was a great choice, especially with the (small) amount of cheese - but you should have had some veg/salad with it, and it should have had more fat on it.

Tea with a small amount of milk is fine.

2 pepperamis isn't great. They're low carb, but full of all manner of processed ingredients.

Look at my Bootcamp rules, and the allowed list of veg to give you a better idea of what to do/how to do it.

I hope the headache/nausea has passed. You may find that the first few days are rough - you're going through what some people call 'carb flu' - the withdrawal from carbs. Take is as easy as you can, and drink plenty of water, and it will pass.

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 19:52

Thanks biwi :)

How I'm going to cut out my crisps I have no idea - I'm totally addicted. What can I substitute them with? Is it possible?!

Didn't realise apples had so many carbs either. I need to brush up on this.

Breakfast will be hard, I hate eating first thing in the morning hence crisps at my desk at 11am. Can't eat eggs either. Oh, also had half an avocado with my salad.

Don't like fish either so the tuna was hard to get down! As for dinner, what other fat could I have had with the chicken? More fat? Blimey!

Like drinking water so that part won't be too hard.

All in all I've had far less carbs than I would have usual, so that's a plus.

Still feeling sick and headachey too ;(

Will have a look at your list of allowed/not allowed - thanks so much!

It does take some getting used to - because it seems so contrary to what we've been told to do for the last 30 years!

There is no easy substitute for crisps I'm afraid - at least not in terms of something you can buy easily. Others on the Bootcamp threads have made celeriac crisps with great success, apparently, but I haven't tried that yet. You can make 'crisps' with Parmesan cheese see the Bootcamp recipe thread

If you don't like fish, don't force yourself to eat tuna - no need to eat anything you don't like, when there are so many lovely things that you can have.

Fat - full fat mayonnaise, skin on the chicken, butter on your veg, oily dressings on your salad - and choose fattier meats, e.g. pork belly or breast of lamb.

On the good side, so to speak, if you have the headache then you probably have had far fewer carbs than normal today!

IslaValargeone · 25/06/2012 20:03

I'm getting twitchy at 2 pepperamis and 2 bags of crisps, way too much salt.
then chicken wrapped in bacon and cheese.

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 20:06

Oh god - I've really fucked up! Didn't think about the salt!

IslaValargeone · 25/06/2012 20:15

I can understand how you want to limit 'bloating' but the crisps and peperami is over 500 calories of absolute shite to be blunt.
Have apples and unsalted almonds which are also packed with vitamins and they will balance your blood sugar too.

BIWItheBold · 25/06/2012 20:21

Don't worry, mumofjust1, this is only day 1! As the saying goes, tomorrow is another day ... Grin

WannabeEarthMomma · 25/06/2012 20:28

I'm doing the Primal Blueprint diet. It's great for general health improvement and weight loss, and as it's a series of guidelines rather than a strict plan, it can easily be tweaked for different reasons, i.e. weight gain, pregnancy. The emphasis is on quality real foods, and cutting out processed foods.

www.marksdailyapple.com/definitive-guide-to-the-primal-eating-plan/#axzz1ypo1CSNB - This site also has a helpful, active forum that I read every day.

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 20:46

Thanks wannabe, biwi and isla :)

Didn't realise I could have nuts - are almons the best ones to eat? I love nuts, except walnuts and macadamias.

Wannabe - will have a look at that link, thanks.

Would grilled bacon be ok for breakfast? With half an avocado and salad for lunch?

Biwi, have been browsing the recipe thread you linked to, will definately make some oopsie rolls tomorrow :)

OP posts:
BIWItheBold · 25/06/2012 20:52

Go and read the Bootcamp thread, especially the rules - you will see how easy it can be.

Grilled bacon would be fine - fried would be even better! And avocado and salad for lunch is perfect - make sure you have an oily dressing, but don't use balsamic vinegar as that is way too carby. Ordinary red/white wine vinegar is best.

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 20:56

Fried bacon?! Goodness, this is gonna take some getting used to!

Oily salad dressings though - do I have to make it or can I buy it?

OP posts:
BIWItheBold · 25/06/2012 21:16

It's really easy to make! No need to buy. Bought ones inevitably contain sugar.

3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon of wine vinegar
salt and freshly ground black pepper

Whisk together - and that's it! If you like, you can add a small teaspoon of Dijon or wholemeal mustard, or some finely chopped garlic or shallots.

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 21:20

Biwi, you're a mine of information! Thanks so much - will be making that to go with my salad tomorrow :)

Last questions - can I have cottage cheese and lemon/lime juice?

OP posts:
BIWItheBold · 25/06/2012 21:24

Yes you can. Just make sure that the cottage cheese is full fat, and don't buy one with pineapple in it!
