Best cereals for losing weight please?

Hi I have decided to have cereal in the mornings instead of toast, but am confused with which ones are best. Some of the muesli type ones seem to have a lot of sugar and I assume the nuts etc aren't that great either? What does everyone else eat? I never eat cereal unless I'm on a diet! Smile

Special k. Nice with anything sprinkled on. Few raisins/ seeds/ dried fruit.

brighthair · 25/04/2012 19:27

I wouldn't touch cereal. How about porridge or scrambled eggs? Even an omelette stuffed with lean ham and tomatoes
You need protein to fill you up and keep you fuller for longer

PoohBearsHole · 25/04/2012 19:28

then don't eat cereal! When on a diet I have had the following - peanut butter sandwich in wholemeal bread (good pbutter and nice bread) or if you can stretch to it proper rye bread and smoked salmon/cream cheese. That worked miracles for me with some cucumber. I hate cereal and not all bread is bad (although most is!) or scrambled egg? Porridge? All things that are filling and last a long time, for me toast doesn't cut it Smile

Schnarkle · 25/04/2012 19:29

Here's a list of a few and their sugar contents. Special K features quite highly in there too. If you must have a cereal Weetabix or All bran, the rest you're fooling yourself eating them while on a diet.

Or yoghurt (full fat bear with me) with oats on. Full fat because it doesn't have residual sugars which can be a bit misleading.

KeepOrfThemCarbs · 25/04/2012 19:31

I wouldn't touch cereal tbh - they are all crap and refined. You would be better off with porridge or some kind of protein cooked eggs tbh.

PoohBearsHole · 25/04/2012 19:31

learnt my lesson with crunchy nut - had a urine test when pg and my blood sugar was off the scale. DON'T GO THERE.

Always think, european when dieting - eggs, meat, cheese - protein based is important. Now if I could follow my own advice!

Shutupanddrive · 25/04/2012 19:38

Thanks for replies, I may try porridge then instead. I'm a vegetarian by the way so couldn't do the smoked salmon or ham etc. I could maybe try scrambled eggs at the weekend when I have more time too. This morning I just had one piece of toast instead of two but that didn't keep me going for very long!

To quote pagwatch - breakfast cereal is shit in a box.

Porridge is the best cereal, however protein based breakfasts will keep you fuller for longer

Eggrules · 25/04/2012 19:42

Porridge, eggs or lean protein are great when you have time.

I think the key is to weigh the correct portion - it isn't very much.

2 weetabix is 126 cals - add in the milk you have??

KeepOrfThemCarbs · 25/04/2012 19:45

Can't believe that special K has more sugar in a bowl than a slice of chocolate cake. Shock

hellomotoe · 25/04/2012 19:48

Another porridge fan here! It's filling, has oats which release slow release energy and it's quick (couple of minutes in the microwave) I always make mine with milk, soaking the oats overnight, which makes it really creamy and delicious then 2 mins in the microwave. Oh and I add either chopped fruit like strawberries or blueberries or add a tablespoon of raisins. Most cereals are full of sugar and salt!

KeepOrfThemCarbs · 25/04/2012 19:50

I read on here once that a midwife told a mumsnetter that she could tell when a pg woman had eaten a sugary cereal for breakfast as the urine smelled so sweet.

fannybaws · 25/04/2012 20:03

Sorry to lower the tone but I have it good authority that dieticians call cereal .... Shit in a box!
I have just lost 2 stone and have been having porridge or something eggy for breakfast, it really does keep you going til lunch, good luck.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 25/04/2012 20:24

Can't believe that special K has more sugar in a bowl than a slice of chocolate cake.
No bloody WAY can this be true unless it's the tiniest slither of rubbish cake versus a skip full of cereal.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 25/04/2012 20:28

Ok just looked at link. Blush. The cake does look shite though.

KeepOrfThemCarbs · 25/04/2012 20:42

lol at the shite cake.

I was really surprised when I looked at that link - I thought that cereals were shite but didn't realise they were that bad.

Spamspamspam · 25/04/2012 20:42

I don't see how scrambled eggs could take any longer than toast? I whip up two eggs in a bowl with a little milk, salt and pepper and whack in microwave for 3 minutes - voila perfectly light fluffy eggs! I might add some smoked mackerel, smoked salmon, ham or leftover sausage to spice it up a bit - so so easy and quick and I bet in a race with someone making and eating toast or porridge it's a pretty close race.

KeepOrfThemCarbs · 25/04/2012 20:44

In the winter I make porridge for dd - to save time I measure it out in a pan and add water/milk. Then leave it overnight and then in the morning all I have to do is put the pan on medium heat. I then go and shower and ponce about, and it is cooked in 10 minutes, and keeps warm for a while (in a cast iron pan, think that helps).

foreverondiet · 25/04/2012 22:53

Don't eat cereal! I have an omelette and it takes me one minute to make.

If you must have either porridge, or natural yoghurt with some no added sugar free muesli (jordan do a sugar free one) - but watch portion size.

ppeatfruit · 26/04/2012 08:58

Forever We know that not all carbs are equal don't we? It's the wheat that is the problem (google Wheat belly by William Davis) but oats, spelt or rye crackers\ cereal or toast are fine. Of course not if smothered in butter or cream Smile

akaemmafrost · 26/04/2012 09:39

I have never 'got' cereal. Does ANYONE actually enjoy eating it? It's a punishment to eat. Complete waste of calories. it's NOT healthy.

Average bowl of cereal with milk is about 250 - 300 cals, yes?

Bacon sandwich - 2 slices bread - 170 cals, 2 rashers bacon - 100 cals, smear of butter/spread - 50 cals = 320 cals

Poached eggs on toast - 2 x eggs - 160 cals, toast with butter - 150 cals = 310 cals

I could go on and on and on providing alternative delicious breakfast options that have the same cals as a sawdusty shitey bowl of cereal Grin.
