Best cereals for losing weight please?

Hi I have decided to have cereal in the mornings instead of toast, but am confused with which ones are best. Some of the muesli type ones seem to have a lot of sugar and I assume the nuts etc aren't that great either? What does everyone else eat? I never eat cereal unless I'm on a diet! Smile

None. cereal is no good. It doesn't keep you feeling full up - and too much sugar. As already stated even the 'diet' cereals are high in sugar (which in addition to not being healthy, leads to issues with your blood sugars rising and then dropping rapidly).

Porridge is good - DH has it with water and a few sultanas on for sweetness. The proper porridge, not the sachets with golden syrup flaour Grin

Eggs are a great breakfast - you culd always boil a couple the night before, and put them in the fridge for the next morning. Serve with a slice of wholemeal toast and a piece of fruit - eh voila!

I eat cereal very rarely. Partly because I hate milk - but I don't feel that a breakfast composed of carbs does me any favours.

Porridge is great, your body actually feels like it is thanking you as you eat it.

Yes akaemmafrostI Love oats too but not porridge I soak small or large sized overnight in cold water and then add molasses and cinnammon or ginger or whatever spice I fancy the next morning Delish. If it's cold you can add hot water.

I was going to suggest porridge (need to take my own advice, just bought Tesco Value bag of the stuff the other day!).

I try and mix it up each morning and do occasionally have toast. Muesli is loaded with calories, sugar content is ridiculous :( I do have this but maybe once a week if that...

Eggs are a good option in the morning.

Ugh - porridge with water! ShockHow can folk eat that? You need milk in it for it to taste like proper porridge!

I am really spartan with porridge - I always make it (by preference) with water and salt. DD liked it like that until she went somewhere where they made it with milk and golden syrup. Guess which she has now? Grin

Has anyone seen those ads in magazines from (iirc) Nestle saying that cereals are SO much healthier than other breakfast choices. I think they compare it with pains au chocolate, croissants, danish pastries and chocolate muffins. Manipulative bastards.

I'd be starving by 9ish each morning if I didn't have milk with my porridge. Need the extra cals.

Can well believe it about Nestle. Very clever marketing.

The thing is lovechoc Oats make their own milk ! Really ! DH was amazed 'cos he always used to have his made with milk and he really can't tell the difference in fact now he prefers it made with water (he does put cream on it afterwards though Hmm and honey doubleHmm) Guess who needs to loose weight out of the 2 of us Grin!!

But I couldn't be spartan enough to have salt in mine keeporf Oh and if you google Wheat Belly by William Davis then that is a large one in the eye of Nestle; the money grabbing arxxhoxxs.

I quite like oatbran mixed with some nice vanilla yoghurt. It's something from the dukan diet, not that I follow that anymore having woken up to the con that is the diet industry! But this breakfast is something I have stuck with. Oatbran is ok I presume?

I'm on a diet at the mo (sorry, new healthy eating regime for life Grin) and I have a poached egg on a crumpet (no butter, sometimes marmite). Really filling and I don't feel the need to snack at all before lunch.

Oatbran is 100% better than wheat bran IMO Mckenn due to its type of easily assimilated gentle acting fibre and gluten.

bint Were you on the Paul mckenna thread ?cos I'm on a healthy eating plan for life also Smile. Careful with your wheat crumpet; see above Wheat Belly book; I never use butter either but I put olive oil on my rye or spelt toast when I eat it (I never have the same things to eat every day).

homemade muesli with lots of seeds and nuts,
Or porridge (1 cup oats, 1 1/2 cup frozen berries, and 2 cups milk boil in a pan, no need to pre-soak).
Or brown bread (or ryebread, the one you can make yourself from Ikea is good) with some kind of egg on top.
and smoothies mmmmmhhhh.
or a big bowl of fruit with or without yoghurt.

Dammit I like cereal for breakfast but have also been told to lay off it.

Had advice from dietician - eggs, rye bread for breakfast. I have a lovely local baker who makes fantastic rye bread.

I was also told cutting down on milk has a pretty good impact when dieting.

I've taken out some frozen fruit for tomorrow morning (summer fruits) and will be starting my porridge routine again. Am already looking forward to it!

Whatthecat A lot of people have bad reactions to dairy esp. milk I get 'hay fever' reactions immediately after having it which I don't do usually so I am aware of the symptoms.

Honestly if you normally have toast - have toast! Get a crunchy wholemeal with seeds in,and put your normal spread on (thinly) abd some proper jam or honey or whatever.

Personally i eat porridge - but not the Value stuff which comes out like wallpaper paste. Get Flanavans jumbo oats, cook half-and-half with water/soya milk (can't drink the cows stuff and soya is good for ahem, persons of my age) and microwave. Serve with a small teaspoon honey.

I have 25g of porridge oats, 2 tablespoons of mixed dried fruit, I heaped tablespoon of skimmed milk powder, 1 cup of water, cinammon to flavour. This takes me through to about 1 pm, I can even go swimming [1500 metres] on this. You can add whey powder as well if you are building muscle or just want a bit of extra protein.
In the summer I have banana, greek yoghurt, honey and nuts. This isn't quite as filling though.
It's all a matter of taste of course but I couldn't face eggs in the morning.

captainmummyYou're right about the 'value' or 'quick cook' oats they're like glue Yuck! We like the Irish ones too ; the Sainsbos organic ones are lovely, not expensive and don't need long cooking esp. if you soak them before cooking.

Cereals that are ok: bran flakes, all bran, shredded wheat, porridge, sugar free muesli. Porridge and home made muesli are the best- another recipe for a low GL muesli from Nigel denby's book:
2 cups old fashioned porridge oats
Quarter cup sunflower seeds
Quarter cup linseeds
Quarter cup pumpkin seeds
Half cup different nuts
2 tsp cinnamon
One cup all bran

The seeds and nuts give protein which balances out the good carbs in the oats, so you should feel full for ages!! Cinnamon has a lot of health benefits if you eat it daily. X
