Anyone interested in/following these? If so, want to compare notes and support each other along the way? There was quite an active Intermittent Diet thread until last month but it's died a death [: (]

Basically, I've been researching around the subject for a while and am very convinced by the principles of low-carbing having read Atkins/Gary Taubes/Briffa/IPD/Dukan etc

I've been on a mainly gluten-free diet for over a year anyway (though hadn't realised how v high-carb rice-cakes and the like were!); I've been doing low carb since Jan initially following the clinically trialled and evidence-based Intermittent Diet

I would imagine that some of the doctors' concerns would be about cholesterol levels (because without the gallbladder your fat processing is a bit impaired) and hepatic function. Research on low-carb and liver is a bit inconclusive: there is some research indicating that a sustained ketogenic diet could lead to Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFL or NASH)- here -and potentially cirrhosis of the liver but there is also some research suggesting that a low carb diet could reduce fatty liver ( here: a bit of mixed results ).
Doctors might also be looking to introducing high energy food if portion size has to be limited, carb would be the first thought (can this be substituted?)

The impressive weight loss in such a short time suggests a low cal and low fat diet alongside the VLC: could the symptoms relief be due to lower fat? Of course, there is also the possibility that a very restricted diet might have reduced inflammation by removal of the pro-inflammatory food(s). The improvement of your symptoms has to be a strong discussion with your doctors.

now why can I not get such clear, concise and informative discussion with any of the health professionals I see?!

I see what you are saying about the concern with a low carb high fat diet and my now altered fat processing ability post op. I heavily regret having the surgery. A recent review of test results pre op are indicative of the wrong course of treatment being followed.

I can't dwell on this. I need to move forward and find something sustainable and beneficial for my current health concerns.

so the question is, current condition aside, which is the lesser of two evils: high carb diet and the dangers of resulting insulin or higher fat diet and potential impacts on the liver etc.

my thoughts on the vegetarian vs meat eater issue concern which would be more beneficial health wise in a lower carb environment and specifically whether a lower fat and lower carb diet would be more achievable when eating meat? Low carbing veggie style for me involved a lot of high fat dairy previously.

From a practical point of view I think a lower carb, lower fat is probably easier to achieve with meat and fish but as a non-vegetarian I might be a bit bias(?).
In order to have lower fat you'll have to increase the carbs but this is achievable with vegetables without having to add the 'addictive' carbs.
How would you feel about Mediterranean style low catb diet?

if Mediterranean includes lots of black olives I'm in Grin the other approach I've looked at previously is the 4hr body and slow carbing. Again this is probably achievable without meat but its the dependency on meat replacement products and soya I want to consider aswell.

vnmum I'm now up to week 7 of the c25k and doing 25 minute runs. Once I've 'graduated' I'm thinking of joining a running club and working up to 5k. I've stopped worrying about trying to run in any particular style just land fairly flat on my feet and do what comes naturally.

As a low carbing, primal eating, perimenopausal woman of 47, with 6 stone to lose, I found IF to be a godsend. I've never liked breakfast and had always choked down toast or cereal in a morning because 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day'. I tolerate eggs and home-made sausage patties far better but actually don't get any hunger until about 11.45 so these days don't bother eating until between noon and 1 o'clock. If I get hungry earlier or if there is not likely to be suitable food later then I eat.

The first period I had after starting low carb lasted nearly 5 weeks but since then have settled down and are actually more regular than they were before. I feel fine, sleep well, feel warm most of the time and have lost 2 stone without effort. No sign of of the hyper alertness and cold that some women are reporting, so for now I'm carrying on as usual.

From reading all the discussion it does seem that IF might not suit women who are already pretty lean, particularly those of childbearing age or with other lifestyle stressors. Longer fasts seem to be very hard on womens bodies too, so I don't think I'll be worrying too much about extending my fasting periods.

How about those of you who fast? Has it changed the way you feel about it?

I skip breakfast if I'm not hungry and have no problem with it - its great getting back in touch with my appetite. I've lost about 8kgs in 3 months and feel fab.
