Tweety, there are quite a few "family" low carb cook books and a kids one too. They tend to be called "Paleo" or "Primal" recipes - or just google for paleo family blogs.

I made meat balls last week with vegetable "pasta" (thin ribbons of courgette & carrot). Really filling, colourful and tasty.

My DD likes salad so evening meals meat/fish with salad go well. Occassional sweet potato wedges, vegetable kebabs, curry served with broccoli instead of rice or try making cauliflower fried "rice". Stuffed peppers (no rice).

It can be hard to come up with new ideas though. That's why I'm always googling!

Thanks for the information BIWI - I'm going to get a couple of books and do some reading so that I can present a more formulated argument to DH Smile.

I feel it is a very healthy way of eating, I knew about paleo diet for a while tried it myself before, but with little success as the rest of family did not even bother to listen to me before and carbs being in my face all the time I could not keep hold of myself for long. Now as my DH got diabetes and forced to change his diet it's paleo all the way. I do cook well balanced meal ( choice of meat, fish and big helping of veggies) but kids are so used to carbs in potatoes , pasta , rice are proving tough to convince them to even try vegetables. I will cook a meal for us and let them pick from our plates at the moment what they like, but so far they may eat only meat ( fish is yak), veggies is only brocoli for older once the rest is all "yak" for them. Then they go hungry. Maybe they will eat eventually as they should not really starve themselves I hope. I am always surprised by the kids who love veggies, it's like something out of this world for me because mine look at them in disgust.
When my mum was here she would not support my way of eating (meat and veggies, or whatever is cook let them eat if not wait till next meal) if they do not eat what is prepared she will run and cook for the again something else that they will eat, and she still thinks that I am depriving them of food for not cooking rice of past or potato to them and just offering them our way (I do offer them also unlimited amount of fruits whatever they like) but that is not food for growing body according to my mum.

I've never really known why a child would not like veg. Even toddlers usually spend a lot of time chewing on raw carrot and eating raw cucumber cut up. It's probably a carb but lots like eating corn on the cob. Roast parsnips are often very popular. Loads of children like peas. In season little chidlren like taking peas of the pod.

Mine love all kinds of sea food particularly crab but that's quite expensive.

I like this thread, need to lose all the weight I have put on since going back to work full time - I find working & having kids that I am so busy aqnd knackered, I eat carbs/crap and veg on the sofa all night feeling crap (drinking wine far too often) and moaning about being tired.

I am going to give this a bash for sure. Have been losing and gaining for years usiong slimming clubs.

Hi. Can I join you all? What a useful thread!

I'm inspired by you all and your knowledge (and recipes!). Have been following the intermittent diet 2x a week since Jan so on those days have scrambled eggs for breakfast but I find other days I really want my marmite/marmalade fix. I used to have toast, then went gluten-free over to rice-cakes and am now in a quandary having seen that rice-cakes are c.78% carb! Who knew?! Which is "better" for such a fix a low GI wheat toast (31% carb) a higher carb rye toast (40% carb) or avoid the gluten and opt for rice/oak cakes and not worry about the carb load? How else am I to have my marmalade and marmite if not?! I'd be very grateful for any cunning ideas.
thanks.

Hi everyone I'm not a strict low carber, and am quite new to it but to replace pasta I have found Slim pasta (in Holland&Barret, also online) it contains 0g of carbs, I've yet to taste it though. I've also been trying recipes of bread made with coconut flour (on Google), the flat bread for a sandwich is quite nice but I didn't like it toasted, if you try this don't expect it to be like bread as it's more of a denser consistency. I also substitute potatoes with sweet potatoes. I haven't long started this but so far so good. I am struggling with breakfast tho as I have cereals, I have read that special k is lower in carbs and also oatmeal is a good low carb breakfast. This is a very interesting thread, I will keep reading and learning.Smile Xxx
