Why do several posters on here say not to bother with Slimming World?

Have read a few posts today where people have said not to do SW.

Am I missing something?

Im against all diets, but out of them all, I do think SW is the best so no idea why people are saying that. Perhaps its because some foods are unlimited, and that scares those who think there should be more control?

littlebearsmummy · 07/02/2012 17:07

I haven't seen people saying don't join, but for what it's worth I've lost a stone in 4 weeks doing SW and I don't even feel like I'm on a diet most days. I've tried WW and LL before and neither have suited me.

BettyBedlam · 07/02/2012 17:32

Wow LittleBear well done! How much do you have to loose? I know three people who have lost weight on it, so was surprised to read three people on here saying not to bother.

I think that because so many foods are unlimited it can be difficult for some people who don't have much weight to lose to judge the correct portion size for them. If you eat too much food, no matter how healthy that food is, you will not lose weight.

For rubenesque beauties like myself Smile who have a fair amount to lose eating healthy food is the good start then improving fitness and portion control add in later to keep things moving IYSWIM

SW is the only diet I have ever done where I have lost weight at a healthy rate and not been hungry enough to chew the furniture.

BettyBedlam · 07/02/2012 19:10

Tranquilidade - yes, you do have to be quite sensible, don't you puts down third muller light yoghurt

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2012 19:19

It's a ridiculous mindset to have ' eat as much pasta/yogurt etc as you like 'free foods' etc

sleeplessinderbyshire · 07/02/2012 19:23

my beast mate lost nearly 4 stone with them 2yr ago and has kept it all off. I know a few others with similar stories. I think it changes the way you aproach life/food rather than being about short term starvation and when I've had this baby i suspect i'll be signing up to lose all the podge i have piled on

BettyBedlam · 08/02/2012 09:59

Grin at 'beast mate'! IloveTiffany don't you think that stops people eating too much though, just knowing they can have it?

personally i have 3 stone to lose, but i want to learn to eat sensibly and start having proper portions and not just eat fruit and yogurt all day which is what hapened last time i tried. i don't want to eat so much.

littlebearsmummy · 08/02/2012 13:42

But they aren't saying eat these free foods until you make yourself ill..they are saying eat them until you're full. It then isn't rocket science to realise you won't want to pig out on fatty things like chocolate. I totally think it's helping me change my attitude to food though only time will tell. With any of these things though, you need to find a diet/approach that suits you and you can follow. Still early days for me but I'm loving SW so far.

ps Pasta isn't hugely calorific if you don't add cheesey/creamy sauces to them (which pre SW I was totally guilty of). Most pasta is a GI food.

choceyes · 08/02/2012 14:59

Isn't it boring eating pasta/potatoes/rice on their own anyway? Even if I could unlimited amounts of it, I still would only eat a portion of it. I think that's why the diet works. Ultimately you are eating less calories overall.

SheepAreSuper · 08/02/2012 18:22

I like my grub and have always been greedy had a big appetite and for that reason, I'd always been put off doing Slimming World. If I had a selection of jacket spuds to choose from, or bowls of pasta, I'd go for the biggest.
I lost a lot of weight on WW only beacause I HAD to weigh/measure or limit EVERYTHING.

I am now doing as well, if not better on SW (with a lot less weight to lose) doing Extra Easy. I do tend to weigh rice and pasta based on the packaging suggestion for a normal portion mainly because I'm a rubbish guesser and so I don't have a load of waste. The addition of a third superfree bulks the meal out adequately to satisfy my gluttony appetite.
I certainly have a better attitude to eating.

AnneTwacky · 10/02/2012 15:33

I've lost 2 stone so far with Slimming World.

I don't weigh or measure anything apart from milk.

cardibach · 12/02/2012 11:41

I've lost over a stone since New Year on SW, and I think with Extra Easy I am learning to eat healthily. You can eat as much as you like of low fat food, at least one third veg and keep low calorie. I added it up one day and I was way under the 1500 calories I could eat and still lose weight. I'm not hungry and I can have something sweet every day. I have still got 5 stone to lose, and at the moment I am not weighing/measuring anything. I'm losing about 2lbs a week now.
In my opinion SW is the best diet as it relies on you learning to follow simple rules for healthy eating rather than making you 'diet' artificially.

jubilee10 · 12/02/2012 14:05

I have tried almost every diet going with no lasting success. I have lost nearly 2 1/2 stone with SW and am still going strong!

littlebearsmummy · 12/02/2012 19:11

Cardibach..I think I've got around another 5 stone to lose. It's nice to know there are people in exactly the same shoes as me! Good luck! And you Jubilee10 :)

ppeatfruit · 13/02/2012 17:12

Paul Mckenna is the best way of eating IMO 'cos there's no humiliating weighing, or club fees or fake foods, and it re-educates yr whole attitude to eating with no calorie counting.

I did read a poster saying that the largest person at a S.W. meeting was the leader!!! which could be a reason for being a bit Hmm about it but it's not as bad as W.W. IMO

cardibach · 13/02/2012 18:42

SW has all the Paul McKenna things you list there apart from the fact you have to pay for a club. I don;t find weighing humiliating, and anyway I do SW online so I weigh myself! SOme of us need a bit more structure to be successful. However, if PMcK works for you, great!

jubilee10 · 14/02/2012 18:32

I need the threat of getting weighed to keep me going!!!

SantieMaggie · 14/02/2012 21:25

Its not great because of the unlimited message it gives. pasta isn't that great gi wise and fruit has quite a bit of sugar in it. its one of the better diets but not as good as healthy eating. at least you get your calcium etc in it.

i know a few really big losers on it who put load of weight back on later on.

It worked for my first two stone but now see a dietician and do low gi/healthy eating and was doing really well (until my nan died at xmas)

Icelollycraving · 15/02/2012 09:08

Well I'm beginning to wonder this myself. I joined two weeks ago & weigh in tonight. I have not cheated,I have been sensible. I am not having unlimited food iyswim.
I lost 3lbs last week & felt I was doing really well this week. Just weighed at home & have maybe lost 1lb?! Considering I am about 8 stone overweight,I have never had such slow loss at the beginning of a diet.
I paid for 5 weeks & got a week free,I will see how I go in that time & may do ww again as I had much better results. When I diet,I am very disciplined & a bit competitive. At the meeting last week,I felt there was the real feeling that people were trying to outdo each other with how bad they had been & still lost weight which was very different to what I've experienced at ww.
There is someone there who has lost over 6 stone since last April,I just don't understand how!
I also think for people who like big portions etc,it doesn't show how to exercise control as such.
I really hope I have a decent loss tonight which will spur me on

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2012 09:14

I could eat plain pasta till it came out of my ears. Portion size is a huge problem for me. So I can't imagine SW would work (thouhgh I haven't tried). Am counting calories, where that cannot be an issue. I do realise that this way doesn't differentiate whether I've had a healthy diet or eaten 8 bars of chocolate all day. Hunger tends to do that though - one of the lowest calorie meals is quorn with potatoes and vegetab;es which is reasonably filling.

ppeatfruit · 15/02/2012 14:00

Icelolly I'm sticking up for S.W. here in that surely it's better to lose weight gradually and KEEP it and the flab at off for ever.'cos weight doesn't usually go ON that fast does it?

Have a look at our Paul Mckenna thread for good healthy CHEAP weight loss!!! and re educate yr attitude to food.

joanofarchitrave · 15/02/2012 14:04

SW works if you stick to it (and stops working when you don't), but I do think it is better for people who have developed a distorted relationship with food, rather than people who just eat too much of everything the way I do.

Once on SW I ate 8 'free' yogurts in a single day Blush I didn't gain, but I didn't lose, funny that! I think it can help people who are screwed up about food relax, but those of us who would eat the entire fridge-full if we could should ideally do something else.
