Have read a few posts today where people have said not to do SW.

Am I missing something?

Yes, surley if you eat 3 huge patefuls of free pasta a day you won't lose weight? And yet I think that's what I hoped in the past. Stupidly.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 15/02/2012 14:13

I have never done SW but have recently started doing WW. Tbh I am hungry alot of the time at the moment, but maybe that is because i've just started it.

SW wouldn't work for me because I am greedy and would eat as much bread, pasta and potatoes as I could cram in.

Different things work for different people i think.

Icelollycraving · 15/02/2012 14:24

I am following it,eating healthily, not eating too much of anything, having about 8-10 syns a day. I just am so used to losing quite a lot in the first month.
I can't see how any food is unlimited, better to have proper balance.
Yes,I understand it's better to lose it at any rate but I know how I am & I know a lb a week isn't going to keep me attending meetings at £5 a throw. If sw doesn't work for me,then I'll do ww. It obvs works for some.

kumquatsarethelonelyfruit · 15/02/2012 16:12

SW didn't work for me. I am a bit of a compulsive/emotional overeater and the free food thing (esp the pasta overload) didn't work for me at all. I stuck to the plan but lost virtually nothing. Also I take fish and starflower oils every day and that used up all my treat points.

I lost 2 stone on Dukan and would have lost more if I had stuck to it but it is so limiting that I think you get bored in the end.

The best diet I have ever done (easiest and good loss) was this - walk half an hour a day, drink 8 glasses of water/low sugar squash, carbs for breakfast (sensible ie porridge) and meat/fish/veg and fruit the rest of the day (no carby foods). No sugar AT ALL. Everyone I know who has followed this has done well on it. It was a big diet plan that I got as a free book on a magazine once. I lent it to someone and never got it back but that was the gist of it.

kumquatsarethelonelyfruit · 15/02/2012 16:13

I know veg/fruit are carbs - but you know the type I mean!

cyb · 15/02/2012 16:14

DIETS DON'T WORK

kumquatsarethelonelyfruit · 15/02/2012 16:34

Haha you're right - I'm still fat and I've been dieting since I was 11!

The thing is, if I just 'let go' and ate whatever I wanted, I'd be twice the size I am. I don't overeat because I am stupid/greedy, I overeat because they is an empty space inside me due to a bloody awful childhood. The compulsion to fill it with food is constant so at least dieting makes me fight that bad voice inside IYSWIM.

cyb · 15/02/2012 16:35

And dont even get me started on those poor gals on the Exante thread

ppeatfruit · 15/02/2012 17:06

Cyb Is right of course. esp. about that exante thread that's terrifying!!!!

But for people like kumquat who need SOME form of control I would (at the risk of becoming a bore ) still recommend Paul Mckenna who actually RE - EDUCATES yr attitude to food and does address the emotional issues that the fake food, Cal. counting, weighing continually diets don't.

In fact they want their diets to fail don't they? otherwise they wouldn't make such big profits.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2012 17:10

I do overeat from greediness. I want o be normal

GetOrfMoiiLand · 15/02/2012 17:14

I would never go in a slimming world diet as it seems to infantalise people with all the talk of 'syns'. Plus I read a slimming world magazine and could'nt make head nor tail of it - it seems unecessarily complex.

Easiest diet to do is low carb, and stop eating refined shit.

SantieMaggie · 15/02/2012 17:39

Also because pasta and some other free foods on sw aren't good gi wise they have your blood sugar fluctuating all over the place and can end up eating more as a result.

Having pcos the carb thing on sw was bad for me as it messed my metabolism up.

I eat a lot less refined foods too and find as well as losing weight my general health is much better.

Icelollycraving · 15/02/2012 19:42

Oh,done better than I thought! 3.5lbs off this week :)

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2012 20:22

:o :o :o

jubilee10 · 16/02/2012 20:29

Well done Icelollycraving I put 2lb on.

racingheart · 16/02/2012 20:40

The problem with SW is that it appeals to those of us (me included) who love to overeat, who actively enjoy the sight of that massive bowl of pasta and that full stomach feeling. But after a while it gets boring, as all diets do, and so we slip back into eating normal food, same massive portions. It doesn't help you control how much you eat. Ultimately, to lose weight, we need to eat smaller portions.

Paul McKenna is good because although you can eat what you like he has strict rules on being conscious of when you're eating, eating slowly, stopping as soon as you feel full, checking you don't reach for food when your sensation is not hunger but some other need (e.g. tiredness, distress, anger etc.) If you follow it, you can break the diet cycle for ever and stop over eating. SW actively encourages you to overeat, and works by limiting what you eat, so fewer calories are going in. Weight shoots back on when you come off the plan.

Mindy6 · 19/02/2012 16:30

I am with you Icelollycraving I too am really disciplined and stick to the rules but only lost in the first of 3 weeks.

I am using NutraCheck which is an online calorie counter/diary to help me with portion control, its free for a 5 day trial. I am following SW eating plan just counting calories as well, the site is easy to use and my experience is that if you do not sign up for membership you start getting emails offering discounts (I am waiting for one now, ha ha).

I dont have a smartphone but I hear FitnessPal is an app that does the same thing.

I weigh in on Monday so am very keen to see if this kicks off a loss. If it doesn't I will cry, miss another meal, and continue.

I do know that if I give up I will put on more weight so I will keep at it.

Good luck.
