Have just worked out that it is 891cal using that food focus thing thanks bitter :) should be aiming for 1300 apparently. that was without milk and oil tho haven't worked that bit out yet.

Like weetabix so shall do that tomorrow, and avoid grapes, shall try and have more of a protein day, going out for dinner so thinking fish , chicken salad.

I use My Fitness Pal app. I type in everything I eat & it works out the calories, fat, carbs etc for you. You enter your height, weight & goal weight, lifestyle (sedentary, physical etc) and it sets you calorie limits etc.

Amaretti · 27/01/2012 19:23

You need more fruit and more protein I think. Scrap the cake and the yoghurt, they're doing nothing for you. Have a few squares of dark chocolate instead.

UltimateHumungosaur · 27/01/2012 19:23

Those cal split down into 15g fat 142g carbs 42g protein

Is there a g I should be aiming below / for in each category?

Shall try and ditch the diet drinks, I love it maybe explains things !

Definitely ditch the diet drinks. In fact, ditch anything "diet" and eat proper food in sensible quantities. Have milk chocolate then, if you fancy it - a small thing like a Freddo won't do too much harm. Have it as a treat in the evening, when you have eaten lean meat, wholemeal carbs and fruit and veg in sensible portion sizes all day. Are you exercising?

TubbyDuffs · 30/01/2012 13:06

Not enough for breakfast, if you are going down the toast route, stick some beans on it or scrambled egg.

UltimateHumungosaur · 31/01/2012 09:10

Point taken have ditched the diet coke...and just having water and one cup of tea a day. Don't really have time for cooked breakfast weekdays but will try at wkend, have swopped my toast for cereal as someone told me too many carbs.

Am finding it hard don't really want t to be a diet more a forever change which is why I have avoided joining a club where there are loads of "free" foods. I just want to try and learn to eat sensibly. But am trying to keep carbs own, we only have brown bread and pasta anyway. We do have white rice tho, but haven't had any this week anyway as we don't eat lots of it. Will buy some brown in but think its a required taste!

I don't think that's enough for breakfast either, add more protein there

not a fan of "diet" foods, IMO they keep you fat by not properly dealing with your craving cycles. a few roasted nuts instead? an avocado?

Amaretti · 31/01/2012 09:16

I never manage brown rice tbh, it takes too bloody long to cook! And the kids won't eat it.

The main thing about eating sensibly is to snack on fruit only, I find. And make sure you get enough protein.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 31/01/2012 09:17

how about adding some roasted almonds to your cereal then?

Porridge is quick and you can add nuts and things to it to make it quite substantial, it's nice with cinnamon, grated apple and almonds

TheScarlettPimpernel · 31/01/2012 09:18

I really really recommend MyFitnessPal - the app and the website - because it will show not just the cals you are eating but the carbs, fat, protein and salt. It's a real education (if occasionally depressing!)

ReduceRecycleRegift · 31/01/2012 09:18

I disagree about the snacking on fruit only, but only in terms of my own body everyone's is different, for me its best if I eat protein with every meal/snack, so fruit AND nuts, or fruit and coffee with cream, or avocado, or a slice of turkey

TheScarlettPimpernel · 31/01/2012 09:19

Oh and it also has an exercise calculator, which is amazing. It makes you realise why people who walk everywhere - even just lots of short distances rather than great long hikes - tend to be able to eat a fair bit.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 31/01/2012 09:20

making your own traditional museli the night before is good for quick breakfasts,

oats
fav fruit juice
grated apple
whatever nuts/seeds you like
whatever spices you like

leave to soak over night then add greek yogurt and a bit of honey or agave nectar

Amaretti · 31/01/2012 09:21

Yes, protein snacks good too - just not carbs!

waca · 31/01/2012 09:24

Why don't you do what wine tasters do? Taste everything you want but not swallow? It is great for people who have cravings for large amounts of things they know is not what is good for health.

UltimateHumungosaur · 31/01/2012 09:26

Ok like nuts and seeds but thought they were out due to fat. Will try the porridge and muesli over the next few days... Lost 7lbs this first week which although good prob explains why I have been hungry.

Thank you for the advice.

Amaretti, am glad you said that as I was wondering how on earth to get the kidsto swop to brown rice!
