Has anyone lost weight without low carbing? Is it possible?

It's all in the title really. I hate low carbing and seem to need carbs. I feel a bit low if I don't have enough carbohydrate and I also find I have no energy at the gym, which kind of defeats the point of going.

Try a look at the f plan or f plan 2 diet

BettyBedlam · 23/01/2012 00:03

Have you lost weight with this Wozere?

Cut out foods that have more than 5% fat (a scrape of butter/other spread on toast is fine). I spread bread with natural yogurt for sandwiches Don't eat cake, biscuits, chocolate, sweets or calorific deserts. Use sweetener in tea and coffee. Beware of sauces! Eat lots of fruit and veg. I lost 50 lbs this way over a period of 7 months and have kept it off for over 4 years.

Not weighed my self yet as im on holiday but my stomach looks inches smaller I have loads of energy and no bad side affects loving the plan so far

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 23/01/2012 12:24

I did SW which was carb heavy, and lost lots of weight.

vitaminC · 23/01/2012 12:30

It's OK to eat carbs as long as:
a) you are physically active
b) you include plenty of fibre in your diet

The best way to accomplish this is to buy wholegrains rather than white carbs. But it is definitely possible to lose weight this way!

On the f plan myself just 6 days in, as a w/watchers gold member ( lost 5 stone put it back on ) I reckon its better than w/w, its carbs n fibre with no side effects, just some belt tightening and no hunger pangs. will keep to it no problem I reckon and it could be the one that gives me a lifetime eating habit instead of falling back to old habits. My mum lost nearly 2 and a half stone by cutting portion size and still eating healthy carbs but no bread and it took just over a year . I lost nearly 4 and and a half stone by cutting most carbs but did no exercise and it took 8 months. I think weight loss works with or without carbs it just depends on the person- the most important thing is portion size.

Ragwort · 23/01/2012 15:21

Yes, definately - I follow a general healthy eating diet of about 1500 calories per day most of the time, I include wine and carbs ie: bread, hot cross buns etc at every meal - I would find it very, very had to cut out cards (and wine Grin) - have a look at Rosemary Conely diets. I also do at least 60 mins exercise per day. Cut out fat/sugar/unhealthy snacks ! I have lost three stone.

Ragwort · 23/01/2012 15:22

PS: I don't have wine at every meal Blush !

ReneeVivien · 23/01/2012 15:27

Yes, I hate low carbing and never do it. When I want to lose weight I:

  • cut out sweets entirely
  • snack on nuts and fruit if hungry
  • eat plenty of jacket potatoes (with beans or tuna), wholemeal bread with peanut butter or marmite, rice-based dishes, small portions of pasta with tomato sauce

I always lose weight. Hell, you can lose weight on ANY diet if you make sure you cut out SOMETHING.

happyhorse · 23/01/2012 15:34

Agree with Thompsontwins about the 5% fat thing (exceptions are lean meat, oily fish and oats). If you also watch your portion sizes and don't snack on high calorie stuff you'll lose weight.

BettyBedlam · 23/01/2012 21:45

Thanks all. What if I am half a stone from my ideal weight - will it still work do you think?

I limit bread and potatoes (although dont cut them out completely).

I eat porridge for breakfast, have a carb-free lunch, only healthy snacks and a normal dinner but with more protein and veg than carbs. I lost two stone last year eating like this (although I did also start exercising 3 or 4 times a week).

Carb-free is brutal, unsustainable and grim. You cant never eat bread again, for the love of God! Grin

Popbiscuit · 23/01/2012 21:50

Become vegan. I'm not veg. anymore but was completely vegan for a few years and lost a lot of weight without trying (carbs galore, but healthy ones).

*NB: veganism doesn't agree with everyone.

ReneeVivien · 23/01/2012 22:29

Ah yes, porridge. I eat loads of porridge.

Weetabix good if I'm feeling particularly like sucking the joy out of life.

VeryStressedMum · 26/01/2012 17:32

You can lose weight doing any 'diet' or no diet as long as you eat less calories than you use. Low carb (low enough) will more than likely put the body into ketosis where the body burns its own fat for energy rather than using the energy from the carbs (which is what the body will primarily use if you eat enough carbs). Even if the body is not in ketosis, once it has used up all the carbs it uses something else (who knows what) and weight is lost quite rapidly. But stick to anything for long enough and eat less then the weight will come off.

knottyhair · 26/01/2012 19:52

I lost 2.5 stone over 7 months (and have been maintaining for 5), and didn't cut out any food groups. I use My Fitness Pal to track my food & exercise (you put in your age, weight etc and it gives you a calorie limit to stick to. Exercising as often as you can makes you feel better, and gives you more calories! Good luck with whatever route you decide to go down.

BettyBedlam · 28/01/2012 18:08

Thank you Smile. What is 'f plan' - is it the old fashioned f plan high fibre diet?

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 28/01/2012 19:38

I couldn't live without carbs and it's not sustainable. I've cut down portions and not stuffing myself with chocolate/cake/biscuits every evening and have lost 12.5kg in 11 weeks. I second my fitness pal as a calorie counter has loads of food preprogrammed. As long as you burn more than you eat you'll lose weight no matter what weight, be honest about what you're eating though :)

wozere · 28/01/2012 19:51

Sorry I didn't get back sooner yes it is the high fibre diet that was popular in the 80s.im trying it now cos im fed up with all the other ones . So far ive lost 6lb I got the book from ebay

BettyBedlam · 28/01/2012 20:44

Wow that's good Wozere. Doesn't it make you ... um ... windy? Blush

AmazingDisgrace · 28/01/2012 21:07

My boss lost about 2 stone using WW, the original points not pro points. Her diet is almost the opposite of low carb as she is a vegetarian who hates most fruit and vegetables!

wozere · 29/01/2012 14:21

Well for the first 3 or 4 days I was a bit 'windy' but then amazingly my stomach went flatter (not flat) than it has been for over a year and I feel so much thiner already
