Overweight Slimming World Leaders

ImperialBlether · 11/01/2012 22:14

I've gone to SW a few times over the years and they have all had something in common: their leaders are more overweight than I am.

The one I know best, I've known for about fifteen years. Her children were at school with mine. She's always been the same weight, needing to lose (at a guess) six or seven stone.

I remember going to WW a long time ago and the leader there told me they had to be at target weight (or near enough) before they could train as a leader. If they put on a lot of weight, their job was gone.

I think that's fair enough, really. They are the ambassador for the diet. Yes, we can all have a troublesome time occasionally where we put on weight, but what kind of leader is it who stays several stone overweight for decades?

I went to SW tonight. A different leader was there, standing in. She was the biggest person in the room.

Surely this is a bit ridiculous?

i don't go to SW to be told what to do. and my consultant isn't saying 'do as i say, but i can't be arsed' it's not school or any other authority figure instructing me to change and then doing what they like. i go because i want to lose weight, and the consultant knows a lot and can share information and motivate. mine is a bit overweight i'd say, no more than a stone or two. SW doesnt need to be about losing weight, it can also be about not gaining weight. target members keep coming back because they think it helps them keep in control i suppose. maybe my consultant would rocket back up the scales? maybe she's happier to be a little overweight and enjoy life than constantly striving to lose the last bit. or maybe she is striving? i dont know, that's her business. i also dont know the motivations and targets of all the other members, or them me. SW dont tell you what weight you should be, if you want to choose a target that's still a bit fat then you can. i dont understand the sulky attitude.

that said, there are bound to be some consultants who are just in it for the money, dont follow the plan or it doesnt work for them. i dont think they should be sacked though. i hated WW, they were really weird.

I thought WW was weird thursday. the diet itself-fine but I couldn't get out fast enough after being weighed.

I agree that it is odd. I started ww for the first timelast week, and the leader was overweight. She said that they must stay within their bmi, else they get sacked, but I really don't think that she could have been within hers.

Thing is, she has been a leader for 24 years too, which just makes it worse imo.

Well WW sent me a leaflet asking me to 'Come back and play' just after Christmas. I left in 2009 so that doesn't indicate a great faith in their product IMO.

Im afraid i agree but i also went to ww last year and the leader was a bit plump but what i noticed most were the helpers who were all huge but each week as soon as they finished weigh in and taking money they bought the ww snacks from the stall selling them and proceeded to eat a coupl,e of them during the meeting,it used to make me giggle, all that crunching.
I dont think its judgey either cos if the diet is good and easy then one would expect the leader to be maintaining a healthy weight.,In fact this thread has been a bit of a revelation to me as ive done sw many times with no sucess so am going to try something different now.

Any idea what else is good ledkr? Don't fancy WW or SW again.

totally agree with you, OP. i always thought it was HILARIOUS that at the front of the Red/Green books there was a welcome message from some Margaret Something-Or-Other and she looked about size 20 in her (veeeeeery soft-focus) photo.

weight-loss is bloody hard that's why, the body conserves fat every time we diet so each time we try to lose weight and keep it off it gets harder..

I really hate how WW and SW exploit people and takes their money! Research proves such diets fail in the long-term and they end up taking money from desperate people in the firm knowledge thaty they've got a lucrative market for life. If their diets worked they'd be out of business!

Sparking and kedkr, I know online support isn't quite the same but why don't you look at some of the (free!) MN threads on low-carbing for example or even join us on the MN Intermittent Diet thread (again, free!) ? A lot of research is pointing towards a cycle of carb/snacking-addiction which spikes your blood sugar and makes it difficult to lose weight. Have a look and spend your money on new clothes rather than WW/SW membership...

And, no, I'm selling anything! just hate that people have to spend anything, let alone a fairly hefty monthly membership fee, to lose weight!

Thanks ex pat.
I had a good day today despite leaving my healthy lunch on the kitchen table and having a stinking cold. I can defo see the link between carbs and cravings, its also linked to depression and i definately crave sugary snacks since ive had pnd.I had chilli and brown rice was nice but takes getting used to.

Okay folks i've got 2 words for you all - PAUL MCKENNA- it is the best because it re -educates your attitude to food and IT IS NOT A DIET !!!!!!!!

Because as someone on here said DIETS MAKE YOU FAT. Leave yr Marjorie Dawes, shit powders and sythetic diet foods and fees. Come on to our thread IT WORKS !!!!!

ExpatAgain · 18/01/2012 16:23

HEAR, HEAR! anything that isn't money-making AND offers a decent long-term solution gets my vote! At least with McKenna you just buy a book.

Otherwise, come and join our intermittent diet thread which also is
a) free
b) a way of life, not a traditional diet
c) evidence-based from clinical trials!

stop talking about pmck being sexy, you'll put people off
I did WW for 2 years.6lb off goal, couldn't.be a gold member, put it all back on and more :( one leader was a healthy weight who weighed in but one was...hefty. always disconcerted me. I also go to curves now. Love the exercise but the diet left me down due to lack of choice.
Started Paul mckenna last week. If I'm hungry, I can eat. I feel I have more control over food cos nothing is banned. Last week I worked out six days in a row! (Personal record). Haven't weighed myself yet but I'm convinced I'm losing.
If you want an easy weight loss solution, I swear this is it!

By the way, since I've taken you all off topic, my SW leader was really big and never budged in weight and didn't share her 'journey'. I must admit, it didn't do much to inspire me. I realise that anyone can do the job, and that is encouraging, but when you are paying what I see as a considerable amount of money to join and stay in a slimming club, I would expect the person leading it to have lost weight and be able to demonstrate that they still were or maintaining. I never saw any evidence of this with her. For all I know, she could have lost 10st to get to the weight she was - but she should have been sharing that with her classes. You have to be prepared for it to be in the public eye to give the people you are instructing some confidence.

I was asked to be a leader for SW a while back, but it was when I was nearly at goal having lost 5st and in a size 12 from a 22. Getting a new leader who was bigger than when I started the first time was off-putting. Sorry, but it was.

I have no issue at all with people needing to lose large amounts of weight - obviously, I am one of them.

I do with them taking £5 a week off me and telling me what to do when they obviously aren't themselves.
