If this was a Poll, which would you choose?

I'm not sure why but at this stage in life, nothing is working diet wise. I feel I rules but also a whole new approach to food. Something I can change but not just for short term but for life.

So If this was a poll, which is an effective weightloss/change loss/change of life diet?

Dukan or low carb
GI or GL (quite interested in this one)
very low fat diet
low calorie
Gluten Free
Blood type diet
Food combining.

I'm sorry for me, I have done ww, got to gold, but obviously not for me, otherwise I wouldn't be wanting to lose weight again.Grin

I'm bit of a yo yo dieter - using cambridge diet. But once I lose my weight and return to normal food I find restricting the carbs helps me keep on track for a long while. But then the bad habits start all over again and I'm back to square 1!

alfiemama · 11/11/2011 13:56

Thanks Rufusnine. Restricting carbs does seem to work, just worry it's not sustainable like you said the bad habits creep back in don't they?

Well alfiemama you're on the right track with the Blood Type but i keep healthy and slim, well i've lost 2 and half stone in a year, with the Paul Mckenna and Food combining AND the blood type!!!

alfiemama · 11/11/2011 15:42

Thanks ppeatfruit. I stopped eating bread with Paul Mckenna (very stupidly forced myself to eat it again though) so I know his systems do work. Me and bread have a love hate relationship. I had an op a year ago and my bowel went into shock and since I have had terrible IBS which I put down to bread.

Years ago I remember there was a diet on food combining where you had to eat them at different times (I think, I'm sure I havent made that one up Grin) Is this the kind of thing you do? Would you be able to give me some tips on food combining please?

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 11/11/2011 16:42

I think you're remembering the original slimmers World diet which they don't do any more strangely cos' it's best for health esp. digestion so would suit you. It was called the Hay Diet (you could probably get the books on amazon 2nd hand ) and is simply not eating meat and carbs at the same meal.

An A type who eats meat is asking for trouble health wise so you should think about going on the blood type seriously IMO. Smile

alfiemama · 11/11/2011 16:53

Thanks ppea, yes that's it, I didn't know that was SW. Is this the food combining that you do? You said you combine and do the blood type.

I think I could cope (ish) with not eating meat as I quite like Quorn, its more the no dairy and wheat. What on earth can you eat?

Thanks Octopus, yes they seem to push the extra easy more now.
I was just wondering if I needed something more extreme, like the blood type diet.

I think low GL is probably your best bet for sustainability. I lost a lot of weight a few years ago combining low GI with small carb portions which is basically the same thing. It's the healthiest way because processed food has a higher GI so you end up cooking all your meals from scratch.

rufusnine · 11/11/2011 21:01

I'm going to check out this GI and GL thing as soon as I've eaten my chocolate!!
Ps I heard a funny story from a friend who works at a school - one mother was going to try to get a doctors letter to allow her daughter to have chocolate in her packed lunch as she can't manage from breakfast to hometime without it!! NO ACTUAL DIETARY PROBLEMS - JUST CHOCOHOLIC!!!

alfiemama · 11/11/2011 23:04

That's terrible rufu, I would be embarassed Grin

Thanks Queenstromba, I must admit Ive never tried Gi or gL tired everything else Blush. Do you know any good websites on this subject?

The G.I. thing is all counting cals. too techie for me alfiemama i'm worried about you for your health PLEASE do the blood type. i have a fab diet not mainstream though. A'types can eat fish and have eggs and some chicken and turkey oh and a little goats cheese etc.

I buy rye bread (Waitrose do a good variety) and some A types are okay with white bread (just don't eat it with meat Grin). i do also cook a lot from scratch and eat a lot of fresh salads ,smoothies etc. i LOVE avocadoes and one of those with tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and onion dip is a fab lunch with a ryvita or 2. I'll give you a whole days' boring menu if you want Smile!!!

alfiemama · 12/11/2011 09:21

Aw thanks. Yes please ppeatfruit that would be great, it's just knowing where to begin Smile.

The only problem is I was thinking about doing the dukan diet. I did this once and lost quite a bit of weight very fast (instant satisfaction) although found it hard with regards to headaches etc. So I'm torn between this and the blood type which are obviously opposite ends of the diet world entirely Grin.

My friend has lost a lot of weight recently and my other friend is a skinny minny, so I feel like the fat friend, she is having a party in January, fancy dress so there is no way I am going to be 'that fat friend in a silver Abba jump suit'.

OP posts:
QueenStromba · 12/11/2011 11:06

I'd say do dukan/low carb and then choose low GI foods when you start reintroducing carbs.

QueenStromba · 12/11/2011 11:27

Oh and the blood type diet is a load of nonsense. Wiki link.

ppeatfruit · 12/11/2011 14:18

NOOOOOO alfie not the Dukan it's terrible, no fruit.

Queen stromba You can prove and disprove anything on here i just go by my own experience: My mum (who is 83) and me (60) are the only people of our ages and much younger who I know who are actually healthy and we are both on the blood type IMO it is such a revolutionary way of eating that it frightens the producers of food (no pork for anyone). Also so many people are unable to change their traditional way of eating they just can't think out of the box. if I were ill with IBS i'd want to try to get rid of it anyhow.

alfiemama · 12/11/2011 18:51

It's a tough one, I want to believe it. However, don't want to do something that is a load of cods wallop and I can't seem to find any evidence for it. Another thing that worries me is, why is the book always in charity shops Grin?
I also thought IBS was made worse with wheat not meat, it just seems very restrictive.

Sorry alfie i'm having trouble posting just marking my place Smile

ppeatfruit · 15/11/2011 08:01

Ok you asked for it!! alfiemama Menu;-

Breakfast; Freshly squeezed half lemon juice in one third of a cup of warm water. 2 slices rye toast with pnut butter, little bit of marmite and olive oil as butter. Cup of cappuccino with soya milk and decaff gound coffee and cinnamon.

snack;- Pear and apple some almonds

Lunch ;- avocado stuffed with tuna, salad of cucumber, alfalfa sprouts, lettuce, etc. all dressed with creamy tahini, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil.

Snack: 3 pieces dark 70% chocolate and some walnuts.

supper; Small slice roast turkey and parsnips, stir fried cabbage, onion garlic and broccoli,

Sometimes If i'm really hungry before bed i'll have a few dates and nuts. remeber i'm on the paul mckenna too!!

ppeatfruit · 15/11/2011 08:20

I drink filtered water when I'm thirsty and ALWAYS eat fruit before a meal. BTW I don't 'believe" in any diet or eating plan I go my by own experience after reading up on things. E.G. Wine is supposed to be okay for us but i'm not good with it so i hardly ever drink it. Brilliant that the books are in the charity shop cos they're cheaper!!

IMO it takes quite a lot of self discipline to go on the blood type but I manage it here (i live 6 months of the year in France!) I have fish when I 'm eating out or goats cheese salad and i do fall off the wagon sometimes when confronted by fabby chocolate cakes and mousses!!

alfiemama · 15/11/2011 09:18

Awww thanks so much ppeat really kind of you.
Breakfast, yep can manage that one. Lunch, avocado, yuck, not sure about that one, but could just have a tuna salad.
Tea, one small slice of turkey, I would be starving!!!!!!!

I'm going to the Dr's on Friday, so going to see what diet they recommend for the IBS and take it from there. However my plan is to cut down everything slowly, reducing the amount of red meat and wheat in my diet.

You have given me some good options and advice ppea. I just get tempted about the speed of weight loss with Dukan Blush

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 15/11/2011 12:07

But you know how the Paul Mckenna works; there are lots of veg. with the turkey and if you're eating slowly and consciously you get full on all those veg. (I can't usually finish my meals!). I just put them in the fridge and eat later.

The problem with the Dukan is as soon as you stop it (which you would 'cos you 'd feel sooo ill!!) the weight 'd go straight back on more!! As you say in your O.P. you need a plan for life Smile. How about joining us again on the P.M. thread? we're really lovely and supportive on there.

ppeatfruit · 15/11/2011 12:11

We've got 2 friends who have problems like yours and they totally ignored my advice about the blood type and guess what they're still ill even with all the medication and everything.

alfiemama · 16/11/2011 09:15

Hi ppeat I will dig out my Paul Mckenna boot out again and see you over on the thread.
I think I may give it a go but have decided now and just eaten some muesli, so off to look up if this was allowed Grin.

I'm also going to relatives for a meal and they are making a pie Hmm not sure how I would get around this one, any ideas? I am also reading The Beck diet, which is cbt for diets.

I am fed up feeling yuck though, I'm having major sinus problems, sore eyes and cheeks and on top of that bad IBS, so something has to be done.

Wish me luck. Today is the day (obviously not counting the muesli, if it wasn't allowed Grin)

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 16/11/2011 09:40

Hi alfie if the muesli is whole wheat free and only with nuts and seeds (if there's fruit in it that's against food combining!!!) then it SHOULD be ok, I make my own 'cos they always put coconut in the bought stuff.

Sinus problems are deffo a sign of dairy allergy, sore cheeks and eyes would be probs with oranges and or tomatoes or potatoes or teething you're not getting yr wisdom teeth are you??!!! (deadly nightshade veggies are a no no for type As) yes i wish you lots of luck i'm sure you'll feel sooo much better eventually. Have a look at cakes and roses on the blood type thread!!
