Just curious as over the weekend I have been struggling to stay motivated but have had a "kick up the backside" with the following comments:
DC (age 3) "Mummy, you have a fat tummy, can you get rid of it please"
DC friend "you should buy some new clothes, you always wear the same few things"
ex-colleague "don't you hate shopping when you know everything is going to look sh*t on you"

Seeing my friend who had lost a lot of weight.
I lost 3 stones (have put about 4 lbs on though recently and need to drop them again)
Went from size 16, and am able to buy size 12 clothes now. Feel much more confident clothes shopping these days.
Have been going to the gym 4 times a week too since June 2010.

cjbartlett · 13/09/2011 20:27

also seeing everyone around me be the size I used to be - for example I used to be the slimest amongst my siblings and friends
now i'm the fattest

also when 2 people asked if I was pregnant blush]

I mean don't people know this day and age you never ever ask someone if they are pregnant unless you know for sure, it is so embarassing for all concerned

DontCallMeBaby · 13/09/2011 20:28

I gave up and decided to accept myself as I was, and about a week later decided that actually, no, I wasn't going to accept myself as I was, and was going to damn well do something about it. Before I'd been fobbing myself off with the odd bike ride and 'being a bit more careful', but giving up finally made me realise I was just going to get bigger and bigger, less and less fit, and less and less happy.

I'm in severe danger of regressing at the moment though.

moondog · 13/09/2011 20:31

Someone on MN once posted it was when she got off the grass after a picnic and saw the large flattened circle where her arse had been that made her say 'Enough!'

Ragwort · 13/09/2011 20:32

Getting hot and sweaty just doing the vacuuming Blush - good excuse to slow down on the housework though !!

I have lost and gained weight so many times over the years, I know I feel so much better, healthier, 'more alive' when I am slimmer - and I sleep a lot better.

Started 'healthy eating' and exercising again today .....................

cjbartlett · 13/09/2011 20:34

oh yes feeling hot all the day is a big one, and just thinking that everyone is looking at you thionking what a heiffer you are
most people at the school gate are slimmer than me, wear nicer clothes etc
also realising that at 5 ft 6 and 13 stone I'm 4 stone heavier than I was when I got married, and 2 stone heavier than when I'd just given birth - ie when I was 9 months pregnant in 2004 I was 11 stone, how did I get to 13 stone

aarrgghh!! Wink

SlinkyB · 14/09/2011 13:29

When I was hanging my fairly-new knickers on the line one day a few months back, and thought "oh! For goodness sakes! These are quite new and the elastic has gone in them already!".

Then quickly realised that, no, the elastic was as it should be, they were just big Blush

LittlePushka · 16/09/2011 23:03

Three things which came within about a month of each other:

(1) Realising I was the same weight as i was just before I gave birth,...that really can't be right can it?!! I mean - clearly there is nil prospect of shedding 7lbs+ with a few good pushes when you are just fat.....!
then

(2) Inspiration from a family friend who has been morbidly obesewith multiple health issues for years and years...he started a diet class in the summer... he is 100% committed and doing amazingly well. I thought well if he can turn himself around and deal with it then so must I.

(3) Reading a report on thecorrelation between obesity and longevity - and thinking to myself, that in creeping up in weight towards statistical obesity I am deliberately depriving myself of time with my children...whay am I doing that????

Really pleased I have started to do something about it Grin

Murtette · 17/09/2011 22:32

Realising I was wearing through the inner thighs of my jeans as my legs rub together when I walk.

Later that day DD was on my knee for her bedtime story and started pushing my muffin top around and went "playdoh".

JourneyOfAThousandMiles · 18/09/2011 19:23

Looking at pictures of myself from this time last year and remembering how I had promised myself I would do something about my weight then. I was a stone lighter than I am now.

Also, recently cleared out my wardrobe when moving house and realised that 90% of the clothes in there didn't fit anymore!

ohijustdontknowanymore · 18/09/2011 19:39

Started lose weight campaign 5 weeks ago. After getting a couple of kicks up the backside:

  1. Friend in work has lost 3 stone since January and looks bloody good and thought well if she can do it so can i.
  2. A young girl of about 6/7 shouting out in front of her friends down the road to where I live 'hello fatty'
  3. Wanting to shop in what i call normal everyday shops e.g. next, new look and even primarni :-)
ladydeedy · 26/09/2011 15:45
  • looking at a side-on photo of myself and seeing my various chins!
  • in danger of not having any decent clothes left to wear to work as none fitted anymore
  • only buying loose tops so that I didnt have to try and tuck anything in
  • too embarrassed on holiday to uncover much in the sunshine and so was hot and sweaty all the time and have no tan!
  • too self-conscious to let husband see me get undressed
  • someone same age as me started at work and she looks gorgeous and healthy!

Been using MFP for the past few weeks and love it!

afishcalledmummy · 29/09/2011 11:10

Someone posted photos on facebook of me at a NYE party and they were awful! I detagged them as soon as I saw them, but a friend told me she was disgusted with me in the pictures. Gave me the kick up the bum to lose 3 stone. I since gained 10lbs but have lost 9 of them again by using MFP to help me keep on top of eating too much. The gym has helped though!

The problem is, I now want to lose another 10lb. Target creep is a terrible thing!

obrigada · 29/09/2011 16:10

Caught a glimpse of myself in the hall mirror yesterday, sideways glance, in my dressing gown and I looked pregnant Blush. Similar thing happened down town on Saturday!

Concordia · 29/09/2011 16:15

they said i might have type 2 diabetes (i'm 37)
previously though i'd seen myself in a full length mirror (hardly ever do this) and didn't recognise myself!
also i saw myself in a full length mirror on holiday naked and thought i looked like was wearing a fat suit.
i've lost 2 stone so far.....2 1/2 to go.

babycham42 · 02/10/2011 18:12

The death of one family member and serious ill health of another with problems where following a healthy lifestyle would have greatly reduced the risks.

Definately the shock factor and the realization that I still have a chance to make better choices - for which I am grateful.

falasportugues · 02/10/2011 19:51

yes, babycham, for me it was the near fatal stroke my m-i-l had, due to out of control hight blood pressure, and sedentary lifestyle. It is something I can do to express my thanks for her recovery.

babycham42 · 02/10/2011 20:14

Exactly.

Some things I do in others memory so something good has come of their fate.

My husband saying he doesn't like me fat and is not attracted to bigger ladies. 6 months later I have lost 51 pounds and have a bmi of 25.4 and he is still obese ( and still doesn't seem to be attracted to me).

Thankyou Kotinka and yes always have been.

MrsGypsy · 20/11/2011 08:44

I decided it was time to go on a diet when I realised that the tumble dryer couldn't really have shrunk ALL my clothes - something that I had truly believed. I couldn't understand how a size 14 could be SO tight on me - well, it could if I was actually a size 16.......

Managed to lose 2 stone, regain 10lbs, and have now just lost 5lbs. Another five to go. Again. :(

whyme2 · 20/11/2011 08:52

I think with me it was the dawning realization that I was becoming the fattest person in the room. For most of my adult life I have been a 14/16 but over the last year I have crept up to a 20/22. I wasn't too bothered until I started to compare myself to others. At the mums n tots I was the fattest, at the school gates I was the fattest, with my friends, at family get togethers etc.

So I took a good hard look at myself and my eating habits and have started to make some changes. I have signed up MFP and over three weeks I have lost 7lb. Not much but I feel better already I think due to taking more exercise. I have approx 6 stone or 84 lbs to go but I feel confident that I can get there.
