Will I lose weight with diet coke?

Am trying to lose weight by eating healthily, cutting down on junk and carbs, excercising etc. I have a sweet tooth which Diet Coke helps with. But is it really not going to affect my weight if I drink it?

It has no calories, so won't add to your weight. It's not what I'd call healthy, though.

mylovelymonster · 30/03/2011 21:23

Drink water. No calories and helps your body get rid of waste products which can cause bloating. Great for the skin/brain/kidneys etc etc. Save the diet coke for a treat now & then.

I am drinking loads of water. But if I have a craving for sweet stuff, I shall reach for the diet coke :)

It isn't good Sad could you have fruit for a sweet moment - pinapple chopped up and kept in the fridge or mango?

ConstanceFelicity · 30/03/2011 21:39

I have tried fruit but it isn't the same sweetness iykwim...

no it is a real sweetness - rather than the artifical sweetness of the diet coke Sad which is far far stronger due to the fact it is manufactored.

There is really no answer other than you need for your own safety to wean yourself of the chemicals

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 30/03/2011 22:55

TBH, a small amount of "full fat" (sugary) Coke would be better; isn't there something about artificial sweetners creating an "expectation" of sugar in the brain, which, when not satisfied, creates a greater urge for sweet stuff?

Undertone · 31/03/2011 18:09

FFS. A small amount of Diet Coke is fine. It's not The Devil. I use it exactly like the OP - when I have a craving for something sweet. 4 stone down and counting.

mylovelymonster · 31/03/2011 20:56

Bloody hell, Undertone! That's marvellous!!

MillsAndDoom · 31/03/2011 20:59

There was some research that suggests that artificial sweeteners can stall weight loss - someone on here posted about the effect of aspartame on them, and how stopping it made them loose weight.

DrNortherner · 31/03/2011 21:01

I LOve diet coke and have a rule that I never drink it at home or at work. Just with a meal out as a treat.

ivykaty44 · 31/03/2011 21:09

DrN I am the same with coffee - never at home or at work or even friends houses Grin

DrNortherner · 31/03/2011 21:19

Nope no coke for me at friends houses either! Are we weird? Grin

ivykaty44 · 31/03/2011 21:26

I hope so Wink

ValiumSoltera · 31/03/2011 21:29

No, I heard of somebody who gave it up and lost weight. She drank a lot of it. I think it is muck. It confuses the brain. Your stomach expects something sweet, insulin is released perhaps and then it has no glucose to take to the cells and lo and behold the insulin that was produced because you had sweetners not sugar is telling your body to store fat.
well, I dont know ,..... but I think diet coke is weird stuff and I do honestly know somebody who LOST weight after going cold turkey on it.
Have sparkling water with lemon. SO much nicer and less full of toxic mysterious goo.

ivykaty44 · 31/03/2011 21:33

See thats why I don't touch the stuff - my brain is confused enough whithout me compunding the confusion with die..t drinks that have weird chemicals in Grin I can be odd without any assistance

fishie · 31/03/2011 21:34

yy diet foods are poisonous. i did like the tiny tins of pepsi raw but they seem to have died out

mumtoted · 31/03/2011 21:40

I've got some manky old coins that DD found in the garden soaking in some diet coke at the moment. Its got off all the corrosion and they are starting to shine again!

MillsAndDoom · 31/03/2011 22:11

Old thread but relevant info

MillsAndDoom · 31/03/2011 22:13

Not sure how to understand which is worse for health though - using artificial sweeteners to help loose weight, or remaining at an unhealthy weight?

I lost a couple of stone a few years back and diet drinks were what got me through a desperate craving for something sweet, so they served a purpose and I closed my ears and mind to the issues Grin

ivykaty44 · 31/03/2011 22:36

Would you smoke to lose weight? or stay an unhealthy weight?

mollycuddles · 31/03/2011 22:54

I drink diet coke daily. Has kept me going with full time work and the non sleeping 10 month old boob monster that is dd2. I drink water most of the time and lots of it. I'm approaching 5.5 stone off since dd2 was born. Don't see the problem tbh. I don't do any other diet foods as the entire diet industry is a con. If it worked then it'd do itself out of business. Dc is not about the diet for me but about the quick hit of caffeine.

ConstanceFelicity · 01/04/2011 20:28

Am surprised that so many people think it's the devil's spit. I haven't felt the need for it this week, but there is a can in the fridge if I need something sweet. Thanks all for your advice. :)

I think the jury is still out on how 'evil' it is, IMO if it stops you scoffing a family size bar of choc, it's ok! (Or is that just me?)

For weightloss purposes, a can a day is fine. The aspartame in it can cause some people's weightloss to stall at any higher levels than that - but not everyone. If you're losing weight by low carbing have cola zero instead as diet coke contains citric acid which can take you out of ketosis.

HTH - good luck with the weightloss.

Buda · 02/04/2011 08:12

I think it depends on how much of it you drink. The occasional one won't do any harm but if you are have a few every day it will.

It's like everything - moderation is the key.
