OK, am obviously keeping this very quiet in the real world, but I need to tell some people :)
I have seen a hypnotherapist for my weight!!

Last Tuesday I had a first session and today had the follow up, and I have to say its quite impressive so far. Last week was more counselling and digging to get to the route of things (albeit under hypno) and this week was planting the messages.

He was possibly the oddest man I have EVER met- kept talking about breastfeeding and prehistoric man- well woman actually -and that being the route of overeating/ bad habits but the hypno bit was very interesting with lots of visualisation and positive messages, and since then my food has been exactly what he programmed. 3 meals and no snacking- and no desire to snack at all!!
Of course its only early days, but I have my reinforcement CD to listen to, so touch wood!!

Wish me luck!!!

Oooh oooh good luck dreamteam, keep us updated.

Oh and I wont tell anyone

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 31/01/2011 22:08

I tried hypnotherapy for weight loss.

I lost 60 pounds.

From my purse.

DreamTeamGirl · 31/01/2011 22:33

Thanks for that Lucy. Its great that you find my desperation such a great time to sneer at me.
Maybe it would be more useful if you said why it didnt work or offered some advice rather than just trying to look clever. Hmm

Thanks CameronCook, I need this so badly. I loathe myslef at the moment, and cant find my way out- I did so well with SW but then a truely bad year spoilt it all and now I cant get going again. I hope this gives me the support I need to stick to my SW again, and get back to a more healthy weight :)

cakeywakey · 31/01/2011 22:36

I did this and it worked for a while, I should probably have gone back for more sessions.

TBH I think that it can help to bolster willpower, but it won't necessarily help as they may or may not have zeroed in on the reason why you usually overeat. Your therapist sounds like a bit of a loon though Grin Mine was a tough as boots Scottish lady who scared the shit out of me. Probably why I didn't go back.

Good luck with your weight loss! Smile

sushiknife · 31/01/2011 22:38

I had hypnotherapy to help me with my honeymoon - I am terrified of insects and we went to Thailand (which was dumb on my part but I was tired of my phobias ruling my life and restricting DH). I had three sessions and was noticably much MUCH better with spiders etc. The really big chitinous bugs still disturbed me but didn't ruin my day and I wasn't in a terrified watchful state all the time.

There was a groupon for gastric band hypnotherapy a few days ago and I nearly went for it but chickened out; maybe I should rethink. I think there's loads 'in' NLP and having positive messages swirling around can't be a bad thing, hey. All the best, DreamTeamGirl!

DreamTeamGirl · 01/02/2011 10:24

Hi Cakeywakey. He was a total loon Grin. But hey if it works... LOL
Did you get a reinforcement CD from yours? I am hoping that that will help me when I waver

I think you are right. I know I can follow my SW plan, and find it very easy when my head is in the right place, but have struggled to get my head back in the right place so to speak. And yes, so far Day 2 and feeling good! When did it stop working for you, and what did that mean for you? Just willpower fading?

Thanks sushi So glad to hear it helped you and you enjoyed your wedding and honeymoon. You did BRILLIANTLY by the sound of it. We spent the whole first session on NLP, and whilst I felt very impatient and was wishing he would crack onto the messages part, it actually makes sense the way he did it IYSWIM

Apparently in some areas you can get gastric band hypno on the NHS!! It has had brilliant results by all accounts. I would be far too scared tho!!
One of the smoking advisers in my office said her sister had it done 10 months ago. She joined SW same week and has lost 8 stone in 10 months without breaking a sweat!!
How much was it going to cost to join the group?

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 01/02/2011 21:13

Sorry, I did mean to come back on expand on my rather flippant post but RL got in the way.

It worked for me for about a week. After that, I just started to slip back into my old patterns of eating and the reinforcement CDs and techniques simply stopped working for me.

It was 7 or 8 years ago. My friend went for hypnotherapy arund the same time for quitting smoking. It didn't work long term fer her either although she did manage a couple of months before going back on them.

Maybe you'll get better results. I hope you do. No-one wishes more than I do that there was a quick and easy way to lose weight. But I've tried every 'easy' and 'quick' fix you can name and they don't work. None of them. Over the last year I have finally lost about 6 stones (with more to go) through sensible eating and exercise.

DreamTeamGirl · 02/02/2011 09:37

Sorry Lucy- I was being a right miserable grump arse!!!
Thank you for coming back, despite me behaving like a spoilt brat :)

Really really useful info thanks. I shall keep trying- I know I can lose weight when I stick to SW and I enjoy the food, I have just lost my focus. So hopefully this will give me the focus to get going again- so actually even if it just gives me a week, it might be enough :)
Well done on your 6 stone!!!!!!!!

I also had weightloss Hypnotherapy, lost 240 pounds also from my purse and not an ounce from my body.

Half the time I wanted to laugh when she started "Aversion Therapy" telling me chocolate was covered in slime, vomit and mucous" didn't put me off it at all.

I think you are extremely rude Jaques. You know nothing about me so have no place to make personal comments.

JaquesTouatte · 04/02/2011 02:44

I know you apparently paid £240 for hypnotherapy for weight-loss which did not work. That tells me enough to assume that, if you were being truthful about your claims, then it is likely that you were not committed to losing weight. My conjecture seems reasonable in the circumstances, and I have stated that it is only an opinion.

If there are other reasons for your inability to lose weight, then it was not very fair for you to try to claim that hypnotherapy was ineffective without disclosing those other reasons, or at least the fact that they exist.

Monadami · 04/02/2011 02:47

Exactly YOU are assuming I did not lose weight. So take your toffee nosed conjecture elsewhere and stop making assumptions about complete strangers and causing unecessary offence. Goodbye.

JaquesTouatte · 04/02/2011 03:03

You say "... YOU are assuming I did not lose weight..."
but you also said "I also had weightloss Hypnotherapy, lost 240 pounds also from my purse and not an ounce from my body."

So, I am only assuming you did not lose weight if I am also assuming that you did not lie in your first post.

If you did not lie in your first post, then I am right. If you did lie in your first post then you were being unhelpful to the original poster by making negative comments for no good reason.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 04/02/2011 03:07

i went to a hypnotherapist for non weightloss related things, although it could have been that as I struggle to lose weight.

I found that I wasn't receptive at all, and just felt like I could sit up at any time and have a normal conversation. I found it soooo difficult to let go and tell her whatever was going on in my head. Perhaps I didn't really want to know consciously what was going on in my head subconsciously IYSWIM.

But, OH went to a hypnotherapist as well, and also found it impossible to be "hypnotised" but the relaxation CD he got from there was excellent, and I used it to calm me down when I was stressed. I think it really helped me to start driving lessons again. Although the first time because I was so stressed out, I forgot what it was like to relax and completely freaked out! I thought i was having an out of body experience, but once I got used to be relaxed it was lovely.

I hope that it is a success for you, and that you lose the weight you want to lose.

DreamTeamGirl · 04/02/2011 13:39

Thanks all

I am , luckily, very receptive to the trance state and whilst I could I am sure have laughed whilst in it felt no need at all to do so, because I WANTED it to work. And not sure why slimey, vomitty chocolate would be funy TBH Confused

Never taken it as a magic pill approach, just to help and reinforce and so hopefully it will do that

Actually he didnt do aversion therapy- he prefers positive reinforcement apparently. Oh and luckily it wasnt anything like £240 either!!

I made a post earlier, which was deleted after someone threw their toys out of the pram. I have been in touch with MNHQ, and they have allowed me to repost all but the contentious part, which I have done below. The missing bit questions the truthfulness of someone else's post, and their motivation. 'nuff said.

JaquesTouatte · 05/02/2011 18:59

DTG, why do you feel that you cannot tell the people who know you that you are seeing a hypnotherapist? Are you that frightened that they might disapprove? Hypnotherapy works, it's been proved (by proper scientific testing, not the usual nu-age mumbo-jumbo made-up shite), and it is an accepted treatment by the NHS. There are some caveats - you have to want it to work, for a start. He said some strange things - that is actually part of the particular process he was using, and it helps to get you into a receptive state (though this approach does not work for everyone, and others may find their experience completely different). The fact that the first session was more of a counselling session is good. For those for whom hypnotherapy didn't work, all I can say is, some therapists are not as good as others, and some clients are not as good as others. I had a headache last week, and two paracetamol didn't shift it - this does not mean that paracetamol are crap.

thumbdabwitch · 05/02/2011 19:16

It does help to understand what hypnotherapy is actually about - a friend of mine went for hypnotherapy to stop smoking, expecting miracles - after she had paid about £100 for it, she sat in her car and lit up a fag. She said she was expecting that she "wouldn't be able to light it, or wouldn't be able to smoke it" - as though she had actually been hypnotised to make her physically incapable of smoking. Complete lack of understanding --> waste of her money, waste of the therapist's time and gave her a reason to "diss" hypnotherapy forever.

I had hypnotherapy for giving birth (hypnobirthing) and it was brilliant. The CD was fab too - put me to sleep almost every night! Wasn't quite as effective as one might have hoped in reducing birth pain, but it did the biggest job of reducing birth fear really well.

But the thing with hypnotherapy is that you do have to be committed to the outcome, which is one of the reasons it can be so expensive - the idea is that if you are prepared to pay that kind of money, you must really want to achieve the outcome. Lack of commitment will probably result in failure because your brain will likely reject the suggestions made under hypnosis.

DTG - hope it works well for you - sounds like you had a good experience thus far, keep it up. :)

dearprudence · 05/02/2011 19:37

I had it last week. It wasn't what I expected tbh - there was a lot of talking beforehand, which I did expect, but the 'hypnotised' part was totally focused on visualising myself thin, with the idea that this image would be so strong I would just be propelled towards achieving it. There wasn't really anything on how I was going to do that - eg: by not snacking, or my portion control, or by aversions to particular foods, etc etc. I was totally committed to it working but I think there was only one part when I was really in the right hypnotic state.

I will listen to it again when I can find an uninterrupted hour, and I think I may find it easier to get into when at home and no-one's watching me.

I have to say that I was amazed how much I felt like eating on the day I had it. I didn't overeat, as I'm on weight watchers and was already being pretty good, but there was certainly not a dramatic effect. But as the week's gone on, I have been very motivated on WW, so I tend to think it has helped.

Just wanted to say "good luck". I am doing Paul Mckenna and am very interested to see how you get on.

DreamTeamGirl · 07/02/2011 12:53

JaquesTouatte
The only reason I am keeping it quiet is that it puts one under additional pressure, plus my mum has an eye raising habit LOL
That said I told a group of girlie friends on Saturday and they were all great about it, and we all shared hypno stories. AND I didnt eat cake and just stuck to fresh fruit and didnt feel at all deprived Grin
Oh and I did wonder what your post said LOL- glad to see it wasnt THAT contentious

Thumbwithc I had hypno for smoking years ago, and also came straight out and lit up- it tasted like crap! I Hmm very bravely Hmm persevered tho and was soon smoking fully again DOH!

Dearprudence I was also surprised by the amount of before talking and was SO impatient to 'crack on' with the actual hypno but in retrospect it was exactly right. I dont think the pure body image thing would have worked as well for me. The writing the names of the foods I would 'avoid where possible' was a big reinforcement and worked ever so well. I listen to mine before I go to sleep, but am lucky that I live alone so dont have a DP to disturb- the 6 year old would sleep through anything

Lady and Mummy I really like Paul McKenna too and use his CDs to fall asleep to.

Good luck to all of you who are trying to lose also xx

DTG, good for you. I fully understand the power of the eyebrows Wink. Hopefully, your mum will see and remark on your success, and you can then tell her how wonderful it was to finally find something that works. She would probably be pleased to find out it wasn't some faddy diet which only works for a few months.

Stopping smoking is always a hard one, as it requires a lot of will-power and determination to stay stopped. Your current therapist seems like he is a good one. If you are still a smoker, ask him to do some smoking-cessation, and/or give you some CDs.

As for that post, the missing bits weren't, imo, that bad, (otherwise, I wouldn't have posted them) but must have hit a raw nerve.

DreamTeamGirl · 07/02/2011 14:10

Thanks Jaques

I lost 3stone doing SW 3 years ago, and then gave up smoking 20 months ago (May 2009), I managed to keep the weight off the first year after I quit, then had a horrid year in 2010 and put 2 stone of it back on. Still at SW tho, which works well for me, just need to get back to sticking to the plan- which is what I HAVENT been doing the last year!!!

My therapist is a raving loon if I am honest. I arrived and he said 'oh dont worry- I am just drawing a picture of a prostitute' Shock (apparently for a book he is writing...) and then talked a LOT more than strictly necessary about breastfeeding Smile
But hey, it worked LOL
