am going to see the counsellor tomorrow, so will see what she has to say. the only problem is the only other group is 35 miles away from me so no good really!

Merlot · 14/09/2005 21:42

Good Luck vickyumyum - is it getting any better? [hesitant, optimistic voice..]

AlmostAnAngel · 15/09/2005 09:43

have a meeting with my counsellor tonight as i want the answer to some questions before i decide what to do, am umming and aahhing over doing slimfast and running it the same as lighterlife for a couple of reasons.

  1. cost slimfast at least half the price, maybe even less 2)not so restrictive so can eat out occassionally 3)i like the tast of slimfast soups and shakes! 4)list of chemicals and additives not as scary as lighterlife want answers to the fact that she says she is still on mainainance 3 years later, this can't be right! surely? and just chance to discuss my feeling, worries and concerns with her alone, without everyone in teh group, as the discussion invariably ends up on the subject of which shops they want to be able to buy their clothes from, which is importnat to me too, butwould like to talk more about the actual future and long term success of lighterlife diets, returning to food, keeping the weight down etc etc. do hope i haven't put anyone else off, it obvioulsy works for a lot of people, and i think the 2 major things that have concerned me the most are the taste of the food and that it makes me physically sick and that my group has so many returners who have put on more weight than they lost! it doesn't inspire confidence.
vickiyumyum · 15/09/2005 14:32

oh, forgot to say i have lost over a stone this week, which is probably the only thing keeping me going at the moment (also not entirley sure how i am going to afford to pay £46.50 tonight, will probably be by cheque and hope it doesn't bounce!!!)

Merlot · 15/09/2005 14:41

Well done! Vickyumyum and good luck with whatever you decide. Keep us posted and let us know how the counsellor justifies being on packs 3 years later

vickiyumyum · 15/09/2005 14:42

will do!

Scatterbrain · 15/09/2005 19:36

Wow Vicky - a stone is fab !! Is that coz you've been throwing up all week though ?

I went to my first meeting today - well - missed most of it - but got weighed, measured and fleeced for £93 cash ! Came home with what looks like a very small bag of foodpacks - and am starting tomorrow !!

Bit dubious about it - but am going to give it a go !

Wish me luck !

vickiyumyum · 16/09/2005 08:39

sactterbrain - good luck, don't let my experience put you off, it obviously works for a lot of people.

i went to see my counsellor yesterday and she couldn't give me answers that were satisfactory i.e food packs three years later, she said thats just the way it is sometime and if she wants to stay a size 10 then she needs to ahve 2 food packs and one meal a day!, but she does allow herself to be bad e.g a glass of wine on a saturday night.

have decided to go with slimfast, mainly for financial reasons, after sitting down with dh have worked out i cannot afford to spend £46.50 per week on extra food for me, our weekly shop amount had not reduced as still have to buy same quantity of mince, chicken, meat, potatoes etc as the smaller pack sizes aren't big enough for three people.
Yesterday, by not buying, cakes, crisps and biscuits, but buying slim fast tins and a few slimfast bars and soups, my shopping bill was the same, the slimfast stuff came to about £25 and there is enough to last for at least 2 weeks and maybe even 3! I am going to run it the same as lighterlife and continue with my 4 litres of water a day. i have joined the slimfast website and already have anumber of buddies with the same goals that we are going to egg each other on and email each other regularly.

i am determined to lose weight and am not going to let my experience with lighterlife put me off, i think i wass just one of the unfortunate ones that it didn't agree with. i think partial amount of the loss was down to being sick, but hopefully it will stay off.

anyway good luck to you all and i will probably keep posting on here but be doing slim fast!

Merlot · 16/09/2005 08:58

Yes do keep in touch and the best of luck

AlmostAnAngel · 16/09/2005 12:21

My dr signed mine today AAA - lots of negative vibes though, she's not keen on me doing it.

Scatterbrain · 16/09/2005 15:02

Hi all,

Just thought I'd check in on day one !! Had a raspberry shake for breakfast - not particularly tasty I must say ! Made a latte with a couple of spoonfuls of vanilla in a coffee at lunchtime - Yeugh !! Am glugging back the water and weeing like there is no tomorrow !

I know it isn't meant to be a gastronomic experience - but so far - YUCK !

Might be easier if busy at work - but sitting at home I just keep fancying a biscuit - oops - am I allowed to biscuit on this thread ??

Hmmmm - not sure if this is going to work for me !

Merlot · 16/09/2005 15:03

OOh dont say that Scatterbrain! They say the first week is the worst and just keep thinking about how much moonshine and woodpops etc have lost!

Scatterbrain · 16/09/2005 15:06

Yes you're right !! Also - I am hoping to only do it for a month - so not too long term !

Haven't even tried cooking yet - that will be a test !! Definitely easiest if you live alone and can banish all food from house methinks ! Can still smell dd's toast !!

AlmostAnAngel · 17/09/2005 07:28

good luck vicky ..........what neg vibes did dr say merlot ..hay scatter hows you? the longer i have to wait to start thr more determoned im getting,i know it will be hard [i have dh and three dds to cook for]but if it takes a year [which it wont] so what, its a short amount of time to give me a chance to see my children grow up and their children ,if they have any ,i am 37 and withh my aches etc i feel 50 some days if i dont do thid now when will i? so im 100% with this for all the bad sides of the programme if the outcome is a fitter healthy me then its worth the hassle

OP posts:
AlmostAnAngel · 17/09/2005 07:34

scatterbrain ..think about if you were giving up smoking or drinking you would crave a smoke or drink ,so of course you fancy a biccy.......but if you did "cheat" would you have one??????? or 7?just think ,,i will get to the end of the day without a biccy, once you get though one day,,the next will be easier,,,,,,,,,,oh and regards the cost ,,if you went to a slimming club would be about £4.00 a week how many weeks would it take to get to your goal? prob at least double the time on LL...it took me well over a year to lose 3.1/2 stone which is four times ish what LL says you can do..so i suppose you have to put it in perspective...

OP posts:
AlmostAnAngel · 17/09/2005 07:38

also i dont like the idea of the programme ,i would much rather lose the weight by eating healthily and exercise.
but i have tried everything since age 8 and always get stuck,,,so this is a drastic measure but a chance im eager to take..and re long term ..i will be quite happy to eat one meal a day ,,,with fruit for breakfast and loads of water...seems a small price to pay for having a future...

AAA - Dr made a comment like `I would never go on a diet where a dr's permission is needed - show's they've had problems before'

If she had taken the trouble to read the blurb - the LL stuff says that they want it monitored because a lot of very obese people have associated health problems that need monitoring as their weight comes down.

As you say, I am taking risks with being 3 stone overweight anyway!

AlmostAnAngel · 17/09/2005 14:02

merlot .do you feel as detrrmined as me i think its because you cant start there and then.it makes you more determined,

OP posts:
Scatterbrain · 17/09/2005 16:31

Hiya, You're right AAA - I would crave whatever it was I wasn't having ! When I did Atkins it was pasta big time - even dreamt about the stuff !

Well - it's day 2 - made a muffin for tea with the remains of the vanilla pack - which was interesting - not quite a muffin as we know it - but at least solid and chewy !

Today had a choc shake for brekkie, and a veg soup for lunch. Both OK - not scrummy by any means - but edible - and I have had no nausea at all which has been a relief !

Have got tummy ache right now - but suspect it to be hunger and tummy shrinking pains ! Am going to try making crisps with chicken soup for dinner !

Not finding the water too bad - not sure I quite made 4 litres yesterday - lost count a bit - but definitely exceeded 3 litres ! Am finding black tea fairly yucky - so have only had one black coffee today - concentrating on water !

Anyway - just thought I would let you know - it isn't easy but it should be worth it !

Did you know Helen Lederer has just done this ? She's in the latest LL magazine ! That strangely encourages me !

Merlot · 17/09/2005 16:35

Good Luck today Scatterbrain - I think the weekends are going to be the hardest for me, being out of routine and all.

Yes AAA - I'm very determined. I'm going to think of those shake things like medicine rather than `food' a necessary evil. That said, I've not started yet of course, and its always easier said than done isnt it.

When are you hoping to start AAA? Its a week today for me - just think how much slimmer you will already be by then Scatterbrain!

Merlot · 17/09/2005 16:39

Interesting about Helen Lederer isnt it - see here

vickiyumyum · 18/09/2005 18:02

have been doing slim fast since friday morning and running it as lighterlife, three soups/shkaes per day and at least 4 litres of water and so far so good, no side effects, no sickness, finding it far easier as i actually don't mind the taste of the products and looking forward to rewarding myself with hot chocolate as my evening meal tonight! (have also lost another 4lb since thursday's weigh in!, i know this kind of weight loss only remains for the first few weeks, so am detemined to enjoy it while i can), surprisngly i have already started to fit back into clothes that were too small for a me a few weeks ago.

the thing that concerns me the most doing it this way is not having the regular checks with the gp, but in order to get my forms signed i had gone to a locum gp as my own gp had refused to sign them, stating that it wasn't healthy and would have more of an impact on my health being on such an extreme diet than being overweight!! helpful! the good thing is after seeing my gp and letting her know that i had stopped lighterlife and was trying another diet, she has been super helpful, offering to get me an appointment with a dietician, fast tracking my thyroxine results (!) and even ginen me a free pass for the local gym, apparently soemthing they can do for people seriois about losing weight (something to do with a partnership between said gym and surgery)

i feel much more positive that i am going to be able to acheive a substantial weight loss now, whereas felt that i was going to quit with lighterlife, just trying to work out a sensible goal for target weight loss by christmas.

re: the cost, i know the costs equal out, but at the moment i do not have £46.50 a week spare, as have just gone onto grant form bursary so whereas i used to get about £900 a month i now only get £260 of which i have to pay £500 childcare!! (sorry suppose still justifying why i quit, but i am still determined to lose weight)

Scatterbrain - glad its bearable for you and hope it gets better for you too, apparently the additions of bars (if you like them) and water flavourings can make it more bearable.

Merlot - good luck too!

AAA- hope your gp signs your forms ok!

hope you don't mind me sticking with this thread, i promise i won't mention my problems with lighterlife anymore and will just stick with you all for support with weight loss!
