WLI lunch ideas without eggs and bread

Hi there, I’m 6 months into my weight loss and need some lunch ideas, please. I’m a big fan of eggs but don’t want to eat them every day as have high cholesterol. I’m also finding that bread/bagels/flatbreads, etc just don’t help me with weight loss and never have done.
I’m a keen cook but short on time at lunchtime so need something I can grab and go or batch cook and store in the fridge.
Anyone got any protein rich favourites or standbys that they’re enjoying?

The obvious suggestions would be salads and soups. Both easy enough to make in advance, loads of variation possible and can contain as much protein as you like.

I'm also a fan of a tin of anchovies paired with whatever veg happens to be in the fridge when time is really short and I'm feeling suppressed!

Bean salads?
Mixed cooked beans, eg kidney, black beans, haricot etc made up with other veg like green beans, chopped onion and garlic, peppers, chillies, any veg you like, with an oil and lemon dressing and herbs keep well for a few days in the fridge and can be varied with different additions every day.
Cooked chicken peas also make a good base ingredient and take well to different spices.

Chick peas! Autocorrect not spotted.

Long life cured fish like smoked mackerel, salmon, Silver Tide herring (delicious!), tinned fish like tuna sardines, herrings etc. Loads come in sauces that you just dish up with some salad and whatever quick carbs you want to add.

Tuna mayo on a bed of spinach leaves with sliced tomatoes

Scrambled tofu with veggies and beans.
Scramble the tofu and fry in a little oil add whatever you like: sliced mushrooms, frozen soya beans, frozen peas, spring onion at the end. But anything you fancy really. Add a bit of extra flavour: soy sauce, black pepper, bit of chilli paste...
Quick, easy, good amount of protein, tasty and keeps you full for a decent amount of time.
Don't know if it's quick enough.

I recently found out that seaweed/laver is fairly high in protein. I realise not everyone likes it, but I often make a Japanese inspired soup, similar to ramen but I basically throw in anything I have.

I either start with a basic chicken broth or ramen paste jar
Add chicken and whatever veg I have. Frozen edamame beans are high in protein too.

I then thrown in some bits of dried seaweed. It swells multiple times the dried size, so you only need a little. Sometimes I add extra garlic/ginger/soy sauce
Sainsburys sell a high fibre vermicelli noodle which I like too
When lidl have their Japanese week on, I buy the ramen paste and seaweed, ut other places sell it.

I also make laksa if I want something a bit more spicy. Otherwise things that are wrapped in lettuce leaves instead of bread such as san choy bow.https://www.recipetineats.com/san-choy-bow-chinese-lettuce-wraps/
Or salads with edamame beans and lots of higher protein things in.

boring but nice....
Oatcakes with some cheese, then a piece of fruit. Apple or seasonal. I think you really need to try and h=get fruit in with WLI as you don't feel like eating much and you need to keep the nutrition up, apple if eaten whole are really good for you and aren't too much of a sugar hit, and have fibre, which you need

Harrumphhhh · 12/08/2026 12:12

Replace bread / wraps with lettuce leaves to create a kind of wrap. I put tuna / cheese / chicken / avocado / whatever I fancy into those and it becomes a kind of ‘salad on the go’.

Tuna mayo on oatcakes.

Soup made with added handful of red lentils for extra protein.

Greek yogurt, nuts and fruit (who says it has to be breakfast?!)

Spanish omelette can be made in advance and sliced (even frozen).

SilenceInside · 12/08/2026 12:47

Hummus or cottage cheese with salad or veg.

MoneyJo · 12/08/2026 14:05

I always mention this but my go to lunch when I'm in good suppression is 200g low fat cottage cheese, big chunk of cucumber chopped, tsp golden flax and tsp chia, and an apple on the side. Really filling and lots of protein.

random223 · 12/08/2026 14:13
  • Tuna mayo with carrot sticks
- Ryvita, cottage cheese, salad and pickles - Lunchbox with iceberg lettuce, cucumber, celery, sundried tomatoes, mozarella
  • Roasted vegetables with rice (or cauli rice) and anchovies

Oh, thanks so much, lots of great ideas to inspire me. Had 5 oatcakes, smoked salmon and cheese for lunch and was perfectly full. Tofu and seaweed are new to me so added to the shopping list as are more beans and chickpeas to make some summer salads. Thank you.

I have either a protein yoghurt or a grenade bar.

HelenDenver · 13/08/2026 08:31

Merchant Gourmet pouches of tomatoey lentils or dhal are good. Half a pouch with some salad bits works well for me

DarkLion · 13/08/2026 13:10

Im avoiding eggs as seem to have become intolerant and my current fix is Greek style salad with chicken and halloumi. Will sometimes make a sauce myself using Greek yoghurt but if not I buy a premade pot of the Greek sauce and weigh out and calorie count a small amount. Currently sat eating it before night shift as that used to be my downfall through not having time to eat

MeridaBrave · 16/08/2026 18:02

Btw - it’s better established that there is no link between eggs (dietary cholesterol) and body cholesterol. Either way other ideas I have salad with chicken / salmon / tuna / cod / cottage cheese etc

This isnt strictly true. I have just seen a very high consultant within a lipid clinic I have familiar hyperchloestemia and a genetic lipid defect. Avoid more 3 4 egg yolks a week. Shellfish once a week. The protein is in the whites.
