Couldn’t tolerate Mounjaro. Will Wegovy pills be any better?

I never managed more than one injection. As I had horrific stomach cramping, unpleasant burps and explosive diarrhoea. I’m tempted to try Wegovy pills as a small daily dose may be easier for me to tolerate than an injection once a week.

Any advice or opinions?

Did you eat very clean on injection day and did you try halving the initially dose?

SeatbeltExtender · 05/08/2026 12:22

I didn’t eat anything I was in pain!

A daily dose can help keep levels more balanced, thus resulting in less side effects.

SilenceInside · 05/08/2026 14:13

You could consider trying Mounjaro again, but starting off with a smaller dose than the 2.5mg starting dose eg a half dose at 1.25mg or even less than that if the 1.25mg gives you a similar reaction.

You could also try the Wegovy injections. Mounjaro mimics two hormones, GLP1 and GIP, whereas Wegovy only mimics the GLP1 part. If it was the GIP part that contributed to the strong reaction then maybe Wegovy might work better for you. It’s also a different molecule than Mounjaro and you may tolerate it better. But, the trials of these medications showed that people had slightly more gastric side effects on Wegovy than Mounjaro.

The Wegovy tablets are the same medication as the injections, but as you say, they are a daily dose initially at a much lower dose than the injection due to the amount that’s actually absorbed through digestion. So you may find that you don’t get the side effects or they are milder. But you may also not get much in terms of the intended effect for a while either. The tablets are the least effective of the three options.

I would probably work my way through all of those options until I found one that worked for me.

Did you eat a lot the day before? I started clean eating a few days before as I knew it affected digestion of anything already in my system. I started 0.25 Wegovy and have only suffered from slight constipation. Been on it 6 weeks now, weekly jab.

Nearly50omg · 05/08/2026 16:23

If you eat shit then you will have side effects!! You will also be overweight! 🤷‍♀️ eating healthily without fatty beige foods will help not only weight loss but being able to use the mounjaro which is the best of the WLI

Wegovy is not the same as mounjaro!

SilenceInside · 05/08/2026 16:29

@Nearly50omg I hoped it was clear from the context that I meant that the Wegovy tablets are the same medication as the Wegovy injections.

SilenceInside · 05/08/2026 16:32

@SeatbeltExtender despite what people say, you can get horrible side effects even from eating very innocuous foods that aren’t “shit” foods. I found there were a couple of very normal healthy foods that I struggled to manage to digest when on Mounjaro. And of course you can just get the side effects even when eating as clean as you possibly can. It’s just bad luck sometimes.

It’s not all about what you eat when I comes to side effects!!!
You may have been lucky and not experienced the worst of the side effects.
I was ill for 6 weeks off one dose of 2.5mg of MJ. 1 dose! I didn’t eat rubbish before I had the injection. But I experienced weeks of not being able to eat really anything and struggling to drink enough too.

So please get off your high horse and stop assuming that anyone who gets bad side effects is eating shit as it isn’t true

Judgey much?!

I also stopped WLI due to immediate horrific side effects, mine were mental health related as well as physical, I got terrible insomnia, racing heart, diarrhea, and panic attacks.

It's not unusual for different people to experience different side effects to medication. Only with WLI is that judged to be some sort of lack of moral fibre.

A few people died from the COVID jab causing blood clots. Another group felt ill for days. The vast majority didn't. It wasn't because the people who died or felt ill weren't trying hard enough.

OP I have never dared take any other weight loss medication after my experience, so if you go try wegovy I will be interested in how you get on.

Gosh, that sounds really awful. Lots of people get mild side effects when starting MJ and they tend to dissipate as your body gets used to the drug.

Some people only get bad side effects when they double the dose from 2.5mg to 5mg but a small number can’t tolerate the medication at all and you might be one of them.

I guess only you can decide if you want to try again and whether a lower starting dose of MJ or trying the tablets might be ok?

EmpressStorm · 05/08/2026 17:34

Gosh that’s unfortunate, I’m guessing you ate clean and healthy the day or so before.

id try the tablets, but mounjaro does have less side effects.

SeatbeltExtender · 05/08/2026 17:45

I had awful pains. It was agony. I just couldn’t function. Couldn’t eat at all, barely drank. Running to the toilet every few minutes. There was no way I could have continued after just one jab.

I was more vomiting on mounjaro, day of injection or about 24 hours was constant frequency of diarrhoea that was pretty much just water but only for the 24 hours after injecting. Went up doses slowly, stayed low for long periods as often people think they need to go up a dose every month, but you don’t, only when the suppression isn’t working anymore. However I did continue but was priced out. I’ve been on wegovy injections for about 6 months now, still on 1mg and I’m much better. I’m having more weight loss successfully but at a slower pace which I’m ok with. The only side effect I have is if I eat quick I retch but then a big burp comes out so I have to eat meals pretty slow. I’m on a calorie deficit of 1780 calories a day and I’m 13 stone. I genuinely feel so much better than on mounjaro

How long ago did this happen? You said how ill you were but you haven’t said what you ate before and after taking the jab. Were you very careful to eat small portions of bland, protein based and non fatty food?

I’m not sure that Wegovy will be much different for you as people seem to have more side effects with that than MJ.

Honestly, if your serious about losing weight and understand that you have to eat clean on the jabs, then I think you should try taking a half dose of the MJ (1.25mg) and be very careful with your diet before and afterwards to see if it makes a difference.

SeatbeltExtender · 06/08/2026 08:29

This was a year ago. I couldn’t eat anything after taking the jab. I was in so much pain.
Prior to having it I remember cottage cheese and yoghurt I was very serious about it. I’d spent a lot of money on the injections,
I was prepared for some side effects, thinking maybe some nausea…
But I was on the floor with cramps and had constant liquid diarrhoea until the drug passed out of my system after a few days.

Some posters seem very fixed on what I did last time. I was not trying to eat pizza and chips while taking it!

You can get the first month of Wegovy pills or the injection for about £50 to £60 from a few pharmacies with a new customer discount (subsequent months would be more expensive) so it’s not a massive amount of money to spend to give them a try. Wegovy is a different compound that Mounjaro and on an individual level you might find it different, even though the trials showed a slightly higher rate of gastric side effects.

The benefit of the tablets is a smaller amount in your system each day, so if you need to stop any symptoms should resolve quicker.

What a horrible post.

@SeatbeltExtender , i literally came on to say exactly everything @SilenceInside has said.

Tablets are a good option if you do not want to try the injections again.

As it was a year ago, you could try again albeit smaller doses. Lots of PP have posted about similar reactions with side effects and some have found trying smaller doses again of Mj injection after sometime or chanfing to Wgvy/smaller doses of Wgvy injection has helped. Read through their threads, hope it helps.

Ultimately, trying the tablets because they are a smaller daily dose is also a very sensible option. It gives you a bit more flexibility.
There is a thread up about Wgvy tablets where the poster is taking the lowest dose tablet every other day. It is all about finding what works for you.
Best of luck.

I was on MJ last year for about 3 months. Did everything by the book re clean eating, water, protein etc. Had awful side effects throughout, even though I dropped down to 1.25mg after the first couple of jabs.

I’ve been taking Wegovy pills about 3 weeks now. I am still super sensitive to it but it is like night and day from MJ. It’s supposed to be a daily pill but I’m trying to build up to that, as the suppression was too much. So I’ve been splitting the tablets (they’re not supposed to work if you split them, in my experience it does work but can be a bit more hit and miss) and building up to a whole tablet every other day.

In other words, maybe give it a go. It took me a long time to get over the whole MJ horror in terms of giving Wegovy a go but I think it might work out. Though the fact you had actual pain gives me a bit of pause. I didn’t have pain on MJ, I had vomiting, severe constipation, diarrhoea, terrible insomnia and nightmares, trapped wind but I wouldn’t say actual pain except from the trapped wind.
