Maintenance range? 1kg too much or too little?

If you're maintaining how much does your weight fluctuate week by week? What 'range' do you allow before taking steps to loose again?

I never used to weight myself regularly which is how the weight crept on before so planning to stay in the habit now I'm maintaining.

Is a 1kg range too much or not enough?

Thanks!

Probably not quite enough. Your weight will vary by more than that due to several factors (hydration, food and drink within the body, muscle mass, menstrual cycle if relevant) unrelated to increases in body fat amount, which is what you're actually trying not to gain. Weighing weekly is particularly poor at tracking this, you can only tell within around 3 or 4 pounds/up to 2 kilos, I'd say, as someone with a professional interest in how to measure things properly, but with no emotional attachment to 'weight'.

If it's something you want to keep an eye on, I'd weigh more often but also bear in mind what causes your weight, but not necessarily bodily fat, to increase. For example, people say 'I only have to look at a pizza to gain 3 pounds' but in reality, what's happening is you're eating a lot of carbs and salt, which causes your body to retain water, so you're heavier but not fatter. If you had a pizza as part of a day of eating that is within your TDEE, you won't gain fat. You could also have an item of clothing such as jeans or trousers, that will quickly feel tight if you gain weight and use them as a check on how well you are maintaining your current weight.

I’ve been maintaining since May-ish on 2.5mg, I’ve stopped tracking calories but carried on weighing myself regularly (every couple of days). I’ve set myself an upper number, within 3kg of goal weight and if I see that number or above for more than a week I’ll go back to calorie counting. I went for that number because the last year has shown me I put on 1-2kg the week before my period(!) and it goes again the week after, that drinking alcohol on a Saturday will show as weight gain on a Monday morning but be gone by Wednesday and that salty food can have the same affect.
1kg would not be enough for me but it might be for you

GiveMeWordGames · 04/08/2026 09:10

Yeah, 1kg isn't really enough. I'm post menopausal so no hormone related stuff but the heat, drinking a bit, having one indulgent night can create temporary fluctuations of around 3lb, easy. Day to day 1-2lbs seem to be normal.

I think I'd start to act if I went 4lbs or more up as I've never seen that happen with a temporary cause since I've been weighing daily (ie since I started MJ)

AndSoFinally · 04/08/2026 09:21

I have a 4lb non-negotiable window. I weigh every day and ignore up to 4lb but as soon as I hit that I’m straight back on it until all 4lb is back off again, no arguments.

I can gain more than 2lb in a day so 1kg wouldn’t be enough for me

I've been in maintenance for about 8 months. I fluctuate by around 3kg, it can be hormonal weight, holiday weight, and random peaks and dips.

I'm on 3.75mg, but will adjust dose if I'm gaining/losing. So sometimes I'll stretch to injecting every 9 days if my suppression seems really high, sometimes (around my period) I'll inject 5mg just to ease my cravings for sweet/junky foods.

Rumpledandcrumpled · 04/08/2026 09:59

I’m in maintenance, I maintain with a 2lbs window. I never used to weigh, which was part of my issue, so now I go up and down 2lbs, and if up, I gently cut back the next couple of days to get back. Thus keeping my weight stable.

sometimes it’s just fluid obvs, as I’ve not eaten more, so I just continue with normal eating habits, but if I e had a heavy weekend, I cut back gently immediately to get back

I don’t want it going more than this, because then it becomes effort, you can feel it in your clothes.

i weigh daily

LaurieFairyCake · 04/08/2026 10:35

2kg. I fluctuate between 48-50kg

Mysticmaiden · 04/08/2026 11:46

My lowest weight is 55.3kg or 8st 9.9lbs back in March and the most I've gained is upto 56.6kg or 8st 12.8lbs, today I'm 55.6kg or 8st 10.6lbs and I usually don't go higher than 2lbs when it's my period.
I guess if I hit 9st I'd be concerned so that makes my range 4lbs or 2kgs.
Have been in a healthier eating few weeks after a bit of a junk food 5 day binge during my last period week, which is the first long binge in 22 months, but I did taper down from 15mg to 5mg so more hunger and cravings is expected. I've dropped from 8st 12.3lbs to 8st 10.6lbs in 2 weeks by calorie tracking and low carb.

Mounjaro2026 · 04/08/2026 12:08

Thanks all, super helpful! Think I'll go with a 2kg buffer

I tend to weigh a few times a week but not every day

Under 11 stone. So im anywhere between 10.7 and 11. But im usually around 10.9 10.10. Once I hit 10.13 I really adjust my food intake and get it back down.

Monjminj · 04/08/2026 12:58

Can I ask how you manage to reorder after a long period of not placing an order?

WeAllHaveWings · 04/08/2026 21:23

When I started maintaining in December I didn’t really think of a range, it was just 11st 10lbs (BMI 24.7) or less.

Over time I settled into a range, which changed a few times and will probably change again as time progresses.

What I did find useful, to switch the change of mindset from weight loss to maintaining, was to stop looking backwards, archive the weight loss graph and start a new maintenance focussed graph to look forwards to the new phase - current target is to stay around the green area.

I inject and weigh once a week, like the routine, and don’t calorie count. I don’t purposefully try to lose if I have a previous “gain” and it has mostly balanced itself out, I can usually guess if I am going up or down that week, but don’t let it worry me, it’s just a check in as long as it stays on the graph. I try to keep to a protein focused diet with plenty of veg, and I am mindful of nipping spiralling habits in the bud.

I agree with allowing a little more :-) I've been in maintenance for 5 months now and sit at 9-9½ st (57-60kg ish) (starting weight was 18st 11). I can be 4 lb heavier one morning to the next if I have a lot of carbs! I weigh daily and take a monthly average, which is generally 9.2-9.4 so perfectly in the middle of my 'maintain range'.

Ooh this is great. I need to do this - when I get there!!

I’d say +/- about 5lb if you are petite/short and perhaps a bit more if you are taller and more larger framed
