Upper abdominal pain on MJ, trapped wind or something else?

Hi

I have been on MJ since 11th May, was on 2.5mg for 4 weeks and have been on 5mg since

I have had minimal side affects apart from fatigue which has now eased , my weight loss has been quite slow compared to others and I have lost just over a stone in two months

I have a history of gallstones but they have not been active for a long time and I never really knew if my attacks were from them or trapped wind , they used to last anywhere up to a few hours, be excruciating

two days ago I had severe upper abdominal pain , it felt more like in the centre of my upper abdomen almost like it was in my chest and my belly was massively bloated especially the upper part. It passed but then happened again in the morning so u called 111 who told me to go to my GP

GP said it was not gallbladder as this is under the left rib and pancreas under right rib he said as central he thinks it is trapped wind

it happaned again last night and it happened this afternoon immediately after I ate

deflatine, gaviscon etc does nothing for it and when it happens it's so painful I cannot do anything

part of my wonders if it is trapped wind as I do sometimes hear that bubbling sound

I am concerned about this being I am on MJ I am also due to go on holiday tomorrow so this is worrying me

has anyone had this ?

Well there is always a risk of pancreatic pain but I wonder if it’s reflux? Mine has been worse on M and I’ve been prescribed a stronger tablet for it which does help. I get it at night if lying too flat and it feels a bit like hunger pain or a rumbling stomach although much higher. I have noticed some wind occasionally which peppermint helps with.

Rosey099 · 10/07/2026 16:53

@Relaxd I suffer from reflux anyway which has been worse since I have been on the jab I have been prescribed tablets for it but they don't seem to do much just worried it maybe something more serious

Pancreatitis?

I had reflux before too, hence now on a stronger tablet. Might be worth trying plus telling your GP you are concerned about pancreatic pain. I thought pancreatic pain was fairly constant, gas etc more likely in waves. Would it be worthwhile calling 111?

Rosey099 · 10/07/2026 17:20

@Relaxd when I told my GP I was worried about pancreatic pain he said it can't be that as it would be to the right side or something along those lines but that's not what it says online. It has been
coming in waves. But it's been constant for the last few hours which is strange more of a dull ache but when I stand up sometimes it forces me to burp ( sorry for info )

Are you constipated? Could it be faecal impaction?

Rosey099 · 10/07/2026 18:35

Not constipated at all haven't had that as a side affect the pain has eased off now but im
still quite concerned

I have been diagnosed with gastritis caused by Mounjaro, the pain is right in the centre at the top of my stomach and is sort of burny but can take my breath away at times and radiate to my back. I don’t get bloating or burps with it though so perhaps not the same.

I'm just trying to manage mine as best I can, am on the highest dose of PPI they will prescribe and the Mounjaro has been a life saver ( I’m at BMI 31 from 50) so I’m trying to get through till ready to move to maintenance. I find it’s much worse when I stand or bend over, if I sit or lie it eases off, which is opposite to usual gastritis I read, but they did confirm it by gastroscopy. Things like gaviscon do nothing to help. It usually peaks 2 days after each jab.

not sure if this sounds similar? I’d definitely ask about stronger PPIs to try.

I got pancreatitis from using Mounjaro. Pain was in upper abdomen, all along bra line and then it appeared in my back as well. I went to A&E as my GP said they would see me in two weeks!!!! Pharmacist I was getting the MJ from said it's pancreatitis. This was confirmed by blood test, x-ray and CT scan in A&E

I would call 111. Pancreatitis is not to be trifled with

@Rosey099 your gallbladder is on the right side under your liver and the pancreas starts in the right, passes behind your stomach and goes into the left (assuming you have typical internal anatomy). So the info you typed about the position of these organs, that your doc told you, isn't right.

Just in case you haven’t sorted it…. I had similar a few weeks back - was also worried about pancreatitis but it turned out to be appendicitis.

Drs said total coincidence and nothing to do with Mounjaro but I have since found stuff on Reddit about others experiencing same….

putthehamsterbackinitscage · Yesterday 16:25

Just to add, I described my pain as waves and feeling like labour!

StraightTalkingTina · Yesterday 20:51

if you have gallstones OP then you are at higher risk of acute pancreatitis already without adding GLP 1.

Ive had it, pain was on and off for a few days, upper central abdomen and eventually became consistent, very severe pain and started radiating around my back. Ended up in A&E then surgical prep ward for 4 days, surgery to remove my gallbladder 2 weeks afterwards as a stone had entered the pancreas.

This wasn’t mounjaro related. But given you have gallstones I’m surprised you were prescribed GLP1s given the heightened risk they create.
