Advice on starting weight loss injections and choosing between Wegovy or Mounjaro

I'm wanting to start weight loss injections in the next few months, I've battled with my weight for over 20 years but it has steadily increased since covid. It's affecting me physically as I now struggle going for walks (something I used to enjoy), I snore as soon as I fall asleep and I'm sure it's making my bad back worse. Mentally I feel rubbish about myself, I'm embarrassed by how I look and fear my son is embarrassed by me, especially as he gets older. I have to sit out of family activities as I don't feel fit or physically able to do them.

I'm 5ft tall and weigh about 14st BMI of 39.5! Early 40s.
I'm hoping weight loss injections will help me stop snacking and want smaller portions.

Does Wegovy work as good as mounjaro? It's cheaper which is appealing for me but i don't want to waste money. I know that injections aren't a magic wand and I'll have to put effort into my diet and exercise for it to work no matter which one I choose.

Can anyone recommend a company to start with that would do a consultation and help me decide. Are there any websites/pages that can help with diet plans/supplement recommendations? Or any advice you can give me before starting?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help.

Mounjaro is more effective than Wegovy according to the clinical trials. It’s not a huge difference, people lost 22% of their starting weight on average on Mounjaro, compared to around 16% of starting weight on average for Wegovy.

Wegovy works for most people, it’s unlikely it will be a waste of money.

I don’t think that pharmacies will steer you one way or the other regarding Wegovy or Mounjaro. Both are effective and both would be likely to be suitable for you. Pharmacies tend to offer both and let you choose.

There are pharmacies that do live consultations, I think Oushk do, also Swift Doctor I think. But again I don’t know if they’d really steer you towards one medication or the other.

Asda Online Doctor has loads of webpages about Mounjaro, Wegovy and WLI including advice about diet and exercise.

Mounjaro is generally found to be superior, but everyone is different. Some tolerate and even do better on Wegovy, but it does appear to be the minority.

It could be worth trying Wegovy first, but from online testimonials (not scientific or proven), there seem to generally be more side effects and lesser results.

When I started, there wasn't a huge difference in price between the meds. For the hope of fewer side effects and better results, MJ was worth the slightly higher price. Now there is a greater difference in price, so I might approach it differently these days.

Basically, if cost was a deciding factor, I'd absolutely try Wegovy first. If I could afford either easily, I'd do more research or, as was the case at the lower cost time, go straight to MJ.

Personally, I was BMI 38 and wanted to give medication my best shot so chose MJ. MJ has been amazing and I got to BMI 21 or so within an year. Sustained now for a year; still on MJ, but at a lower dose with no plan to stop entirely soon.

Everyone I know personally who tried jabs and said it didn’t work for them has been on Wegovy. So I’d go for MJ. Wegovy is cheaper but if you have to waste money on it before swapping over then you may as well use MJ from the get go

I’ve been on wegovy since mid January and have lost just over 3 stone. Had the odd day of feeling nauseous and the odd day of a bit of diahorrea but been fine apart from that with minimal side effects. I’ve been really impressed with the results and check prices each month on igovy. I am going to try and reduce the doses as am happy with the current weight loss and want to see if I can maintain current weight either without it or on lower doses.

Honestly, I think it's really hard to tell. Lots of people go for mounjaro because it is generally more effective for weight loss. But all the people I know who have used mounjaro, although it has been incredibly effective, have struggled with how they've felt on it because they've barely felt able to eat. So that has an impact on their energy levels, though no doubt they've lost weight, and quickly.

I started with wegovy and had heard lots about side effects and limited effectiveness, but I found i had some appetite supression from my first 0.25mg starter dose, and no side effects. I know I'm one of the lucky ones. There's no way of knowing how well your body will respond to it until to try it though.

I feel great on Mounjaro, my energy levels are super high and I feel so much better in myself than before. I don’t feel barely able to eat, and if I did I would move down a dose. I run, walk for miles and miles and am generally way more active than I ever was before.

I know that Wegovy works well for lots of people. If I was starting now I would probably consider giving Wegovy a try given how much cheaper it is. If it turns out it works for you then great. If not then you can always swap to Mounjaro and go from there.

I have lost 9 stone on MJ. Sure the first few weeks were horrendous as I struggled to eat enough but after that I have been eating a normal amount, just better food. I have never had so much energy since I was about 10 years old. I go swimming and running and am constantly on the go when I’m at home whereas before i used to sit on the sofa 95% of the time. Everyone is different.

Proteinpudding · 06/07/2026 08:04

@takeharry I know everyone is different, that's why I said no one knows until they try it how they'll respond...
MJ does generally have a stronger effect though, otherwise it wouldn't be as effective in helping people lose weight. For people who have a lot to lose that's more likely to be worth it. For me it wouldn't have been worth it.

KrazyKatty · 06/07/2026 15:08

Don’t put it off, but get it ordered today. You can always stop taking it if it’s not right for you, but you won’t know until you try.

I started MJ last September and wish I’d started it sooner. It’s been a complete miracle drug for me!

Oneyellowdog26 · 06/07/2026 22:02

Thanks everyone, lots to think about! (I'm an over thinker). Im definitely going to take the plunge really soon.
