Has Mounjaro just stopped working for anyone else?

Mounjaro was a miracle drug for me. I lost 6 stone in just under a year. But for the last few months it just seems to have stopped working.

I’m still overweight! I only just managed to get down to a few pounds under obese. So the weight ought to still be coming off with relatively minimal effort, although I expected it to be slower.

Instead it’s like I might as well be injecting water… food noise back, binge eating, no digestive consequences! Back to my bad old ways.

I’m on the full 15 dose and have been for about 8 months.

I’m thinking I will take a proper break and go it alone - I can’t afford to keep it up if it’s not working, and maybe I just need a break after over a year trying.

But it would be nice to know I could try again when I’m ready.

Has anyone else experienced it just not really doing anything any more? Or stopped and had it be effective when they’ve started it again?

Why don’t you speak to your provider and see what they recommend

I've been going through something very similar and want to reassure you that you're not alone.
I've been on Mounjaro since October 2024 and am currently on 15mg. This week, despite it being the day after my injection (when appetite suppression is usually strongest), I've been absolutely starving. The food noise has been intense and I've found myself thinking about food constantly.
I've stuck to my usual routine, prioritising protein, eating healthy foods and maintaining a calorie deficit, so it was a real shock when I stepped on the scales and found I'd gained 2lb this week.
I worried the medication had stopped working, but this is the fourth dose from the same pen and the previous doses worked exactly as expected. I wonder whether what's happening is less about the medication and more about my body pushing back after significant weight loss.
I've gone from 14st 10lb to 8st 7lb, so it's possible my body is trying to defend its weight and sending stronger hunger signals. The weight gain itself doesn't really concern me because I'm now maintaining rather than actively trying to lose more. My bigger concern is the return of food noise and the fear of slipping back into old habits.
What I'm trying to remind myself is that a temporary increase in hunger doesn't mean I've failed, and a 2lb gain doesn't mean I've suddenly put on fat. I've stayed on plan, and that's what matters.
I'd be interested to know how long it lasts and whether it settles down again.

What stood out for me was you saying it ought to still come off with ‘minimal effort’. Now is the time to put some effort in, count your calories, increase protein and if you can, increase your steps and It will come off. I’ve lost 9 and half stone and it’s never not worked but I am very strict with my food, even when hungry, I have to remind myself that I don’t want to put it back on and I’m spending a lot of money. Hopefully others will be round with more advice.

Probably because the provider won't have much helpful to say about as the OP is on the maximum dose already.

I haven't had this issue personally, but there have been a couple of people on the long running threads I am on who have. They have had some success with taking a break from it, and then restarting. I think it could be worth a try if you are on 15mg and really not feeling any effect at all. I think that over time the slowed digestion can ease up, which reduces some of the effect of the medication. It will take a month for the medication to be totally out of your system.

The other thing you could consider is giving Wegovy a try, as it's cheaper and a different medication, and it may work for you.

Or, you could try injecting every 5 days instead of 7. I have read on here of people doing that and it helping.

The other option is to try to do a reset and have a clear week at least of no bingeing, no sugar, no processed carbs, lots of fibre and protein. That will work with the medication rather than against it. But the issue there is of course actually being able to do that. It doesn't even have to be a calorie deficit, just maintenance calories for a week but aiming to minimise blood sugar peaks and troughs. Then you can work on moving back into a calorie deficit.

Has it been several months with no weight loss at all?

I follow a few people on sm and it seems fairly common, I think it seems to depend on how you responded initially,18 months on I'm still taking it,but for other benefits and I get full suppression and all the other benefits on 2.5 , I lost all my weight on 2.5 too, it's very strange how some people are very sensitive, and others have to go up the doses and then it seems it stops working.

I think this is your issue.

You’ve had some good advice on this thread. In your shoes I’d do a full back to basics reset- eat in a calorie deficit, prioritising protein and fibre and cutting out sugar. If that doesn’t get the scales moving then well I’d come off it for a month then restart it on 2.5. Good luck.

I am in a similar situation but I don't think my food noise has returned as much as yours.
MJ for 23 months. 7 stone lost with 2 to go.
Not lost anything for the past 6 months.
Been on 15mg for 5 months & I have just had to pay the new prices after my stockpile has run out.
Also the new pen came with no bonus dose which was kind of a double whammy! My cost per week is now £66.50 whereas before it was £29
I can still feel it working in the background but the effects are not as good as last year. My food noise & suppression levels seem to be all over the place.
Binge eating has crept back in but it is rare & nowhere near as bad as what it was before MJ.
I have done my whole journey so far not counting calories or exercising but I now need to do something otherwise nothing will change. Signed up to a gym (which was always on the cards eventually) & have started resistance training with some cardio. If that doesn't work then I will calorie count alongside. I must be currently be eating around maintenance calories.
Having to pay the increased prices has kicked me up the backside. Long term I am unsure about staying on MJ, before the price increase it would be 100% stay on for life but now not so much. I can afford it but begrudge spending that much. Won't make any changes with the meds until I get to goal.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I just thought I’d update to say I genuinely think I might have had a duff pen? Or due to a few holidays and things my dose timings got a bit erratic so maybe that. But started a new pen a couple weeks ago and bam! Appetite suppression back with a vengeance and I’ve re-lost 10lbs practically overnight. So I’m ploughing on with it again now!

If you are also continuously using the same injection site this can also affect it. Change where you inject it and rotate the sites.

This is good to hear! Wegovy stopped working for me after 18 months and I plodded on but have just switched to Munjaro. It has totally kickstarted my suppressions (thank goodness!)

my endocrinologist told me that it is a medication for life but due to the costs, we will continue for an year like this and then go back to Wegovy, but half doses, so it should cost about £100 a month.

she is hopeful that one day they will realize that obesity is a chronic illness that requires medication as any other, but in the meantime, have to continue as is…
